“A deeply emotional love story…the unraveling of secrets, lies and a very complex love triangle.” —Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club July ’21 Pick)
"Nail-biting." —Town & Country
“A magnificent page-turner.” —Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, New York Times bestselling author
“[An] irresistible placement of a complicated family in a bewitching place.” —The New York Times
A story of summer, secrets, love, and lies: in the course of a singular day on Cape Cod, one woman must make a life-changing decision that has been brewing for decades.
“This house, this place, knows all my secrets.”
It is a perfect August morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace”—the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn’t forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.

Love this book!. Sweet, heart wrenching tale that’s beautifully written. I couldn’t put this book down!
The paper palace. Loved the story. Great read.
Fabulous!. As I finish reading the last word, I reflect. I loved this book, the story! I loved how Miranda brought all the characters to life. I laughed out loud, I gasped, I cried! I wish I could read it again and start over from the beginning, right now!
.... Oh man! I love hated this book. I was surprised that I could following along considering how jumpy the story line was for the majority of time. I liked that though. I had to re read the first few pages again to fully understand what she choose(in my opinion) It was really an interesting layout. I wouldnrecommend it!
Wonderful. Heartbreaking, raw, and wonderful. I devoured every page.
The Paper Palace. The book does what all good books do; take you to a place as real & engrossing as life. Excellent first novel, I look forward to the next one.
Good read. A roller coaster of emotions from start to finish.
Love. It’s very hard leaving these characters behind.
Didn’t want it to end!. Didn’t want it to end!
No point. Pointless, long and drawn out skipped through the over detailed descriptions of swamp life. Save your money
Good story, bad ending.. Enjoyed the story and the lead character. Was really interested in her life and this is definitely a page turner. However the ending was horrible. I’m really not even sure what happened. The description of the book says she has to make a choice. The ending doesn’t make it clear what choice she made. Dissatisfied and disappointed.
Trigger warning. I couldn’t get past the sample because of the assault that happens. Save yourselves!
Was expecting more -. All the back and forth - ugh. And then the ending - just a so, so read for me.
Great read. The various characters past and present contributed to complex family relationship. How children become who they are, with the choices parents make.
Disappointing. Absolutely labored throughout this reading to a disappointing end.
Beautiful, descriptive prose layered over deep family secrets. This is a story of a complicated family with many skeletons in the closet. Very beautiful prose.
The writing…. It is a beautifully written and told story. I am shocked that this is her first novel, because it reads like someone who has many published books. I hope she is working on her next one, as she is a writer to watch. Excellent!
Okay. Nice story but nothing particularly enthralling.
Hello Beautiful. The story of a family cottage and it’s pull on the protagonist. It’s a story of finding first a love connection in that special place, then moving on to build a family with someone else. The inevitable return to the magical place and reunion with that first love that was never really lost.
Great…and then, Not. If I was reading this book in the traditional manner, not online, it would be across the room on the floor after reading the last paragraph. I was hoping for a better ending. I enjoyed the beginning, but the author’s love of description became too much; the plot and characters became lost in minute detail. My opinion. Too many characters to care about without enough development of each of them. Too many things left unanswered. It felt as if the point of the book was to focus on creating a visual image for the reader of the surroundings; eventually I became bored and began skipping lines, looking for activity.
Add to your favorites!. This book reminds me of a Pat Conroy (who is one of my favorite authors) novel but without the “southern-ness”. It’s got wit, love, sex, cancer, secrets, tragedy, assault, perversion, food and alcohol. I couldn’t put it down.
Trigger warning. Trigger warning: child sexual abuse. If the vulgar description of child abuse wasn’t bad enough to make you burn it the rest of the story is overly descriptive for no reason. I had to reread the first chapter because it was hard to keep focus/my attention. Overall worst book I’ve read
Couldn’t put it down. Couldn’t put it down, desperately wanted to know the ending but did not want the book to end. I loved it.
So good!. Reminiscent of the movie “Bridges of Madison County”. Great writing.
A very interesting story. Well written and hard to put down. Just a story about a woman’s life… who she loves and who she hates.
A timeless story. Beautifully written encapsulating a life gone by what’s thought but never ending love pursues.
Perfect couldn’t/ wouldn’t want to improve it. Nothing I can say except wonderful … simply wonderful
Fascinating. A total page turner. I couldn’t put it down. However I was disappointed by the ending but worth the read.
The paper palace. Awful and self absorbing. Totally boring and long winded
Best book of 2021. Sad I’m finished.
Ah maze balls. Just kept wanting more. So complicated, heart breaking, yet so much love.
Those Branch Off Convos. It’s definitely a page turner! That, l loved. First time reading a book by this author. A little over-descriptive for my taste, kind of like when you have a conversation and it branches off a crazy direction only to come back to the point. I found myself asking “wait, who’s this again?” often because of the back and fourths. The story line was -raw, in such a humane way. 👏🏽 A good summer read.
Well written. I really like how the author describes minutia of every day life. The characters came to life under her careful craft, and I enjoyed being out of glimpse into another way of life. I didn’t fully understand some of the main characters conflict or the depth of her love affair, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the book I found love affair to be a little
Well written but…. This is a very well written book that drags us through a very disturbed series of relationships across years and years of misery. Every relationship described in this book whether between adults and adults or children and adults or children and children is very disturbed. Well, there are two exceptions but they are not central characters. I admit I couldn’t stop reading it but I didn’t like the people, well with the exception of Peter. I didn’t like the people. It’s a book full of mistakes and painful returns to mistakes and it just isn’t my kind of book.
Superb. Extraordinarily well written. Deep character development. Page turning story.
Disappointing. I spent so much time reading this thinking there must be a poetic end . However, it turns out that it was just a series of diary entries with no point.
Absolutely beautifully breathtaking. I loved this book with every fiber of my being. The detailed descriptions, the back and forth of time. I waited for days until forcing myself to finish it because I never wanted it to end.
Not relaxing. I suppose if you can get past the casual adultery to the memories of childhood sexual abuse, you might enjoy this book. I tolerated this book as long as I could before quitting it.
Love. What a great read, beautiful writer. This is a must read.
One of the best books , I ve readd. Thank you Reese
This book needed trigger warnings.. I liked it & finished it but there was definitely pieces I wasn’t expecting from description. Descriptive book. Loved the back and fourth from childhood to adulthood. Glad I read but not what I was expecting.
Vibrant and lyrical. This author has an amazing turn with words and the plot kept me hooked the whole time. The characters were intense, passionate, and vibrantly real. The human interest was compelling and moving. I loved it. Note: If you are triggered by any sort of sexual trauma this is not the book for you.
Romance, Pain, insecurities, and braveness. Wow!! I would have chosen Peter also.
A page turner. Loved the style of writing - kept me hanging on through every page.
Fantastic Writing. Took me a bit to get into it, but once I did…. Great writing, great characters and loved the ending that left us all wondering.
Misleading. I think a negative review is more appropriate for this smut! Written child pornography and grooming is what this sample shows what is inside this book.
Interesting read.. I felt the book lacked finality. I enjoyed the book, however, I was left wanting more out of the ending. It was as though the author said “Alright, that’s enough. Leave the rest to the reader”

Remarkable. Really well done. I loved it.
Couldn’t put it down!. It took me less than 24 hours to read. Couldn’t put it down!
Page turner!. Definitely cannot put it down.
