Good ReadI thought it was good reading and kept you involved. A few things kept it from being accurate. Not taking a picture of Dr. Richard’s to Alex to confirm that he was the person that attacked him would have been the obvious police move, but I understand that the author wanted to prolong this. And not having the subject lay flat on the floor with palms up and ankles crossed while she waited for backup is the proper police procedure but this again would have prevented the one on one struggle that the author wanted. Still, it kept me turning pages wanting me to keep reading. I enjoyed it!.Score: 5/5

Loving this new series from Blake!Loving this new series from Blake! Ella has worked her way up through the ranks and has finally made it into the FBI. Although not where she wants to be within the organization, she bides her time and focuses on excelling at her job until that time comes. Finally, she is abruptly asked to take part in a new program where she can become a field agent and she takes her chance to be paired up with a seasoned agent and work through a case. With this being Ella’s first case, she has a lot to learn, but we see early on that she really is on the right track and has the right mindset. As she works through the case and murders continue to happen, she and her new partner work together to stop the killer as quickly as possible. This was a great first book in a series – it introduces us to not only Ella but also her partner and gives us small backstories on both of them to where we understand them but there is so much more involving them. Ella, for example, has nightmares reliving her father’s murder from when she was a child, and I can’t wait to see her expand on it and if one day she will finally investigate that (like another series and character from Blake)! BlahI generally don’t like to stop reading mid way through a book but couldn’t stomach any more of this past about the halfway point. Just seems so cliched and boring and uninspired. Somewhat interesting idea for a killer but rest is just standard fare done way better most everywhere else. Can’t believe this is book one of like 6 or more. Will not be reading any further and I’m going so far as to delete the copy of book one I purchased, I disliked this so much I’ve bought about 2-3 books a month for years on iBooks and sadly only ever have made one other review I think and that was for a terrible read also. It was free1.5 stars The author is American and has churned out at least 6 series of thrillers involving female protagonists with names like Avery, Riley, and Mackenzie. This represents of the start of yet another series involving rookie FBI agent Ella Dark. In brief Our gal had a bad childhood and has studied serial killers all her life, not because she wants to be one but because she wants to catch those suckers. She gets sidelined into clerical /research jobs in law enforcement until one day, one evening in fact, the (male) director of the behavioural unit plucks her from obscurity to look into a fresh case of female dismemberment down in Louisiana. The thing that distinguishes Ella’s elevation from that of another Southern gal from a broken home named Clarice, is that she’s paired up with an experienced female agent, not a male one, in this instance a cynical fifty-something, hard drinking, yet extremely fit looking gal named something or other, who says there’s nothing to indicate a serial killer apart from all the bodies that keep showing up. (A significant factor, I would have thought, but hey, what would I know? I’m no detective, just an old white guy.) Our gal sees the pattern though. The killer is restaging the modus operandi of other North American serial killers, some better known than others, all the while building to his piece de resistance: Bundyland. Can she stop him in time? Writing Better edited than the previous effort I read by Ms Pierce but the same breathless, high school writer style, riddled with plot and character inconsistencies. Bottom line I read it because it was free, okay? An extra half star for the concise summaries of how the various serial killers did their thang, which saved me having to go to Wikipedia. Judging by the number of positive reviews of this, and the author’s many other books, on Goodreads, other people feel differently to me..Score: 2/5

A Female Heroine Book Worth ReadingI am not sure if the author is female or male. The use of all female main characters makes me lean towards the author being female. Unlike many others, this book is easy to read and enjoy. While the main characters are very capable, they are not built to be totally unbelievable or obnoxiously feminist. The book has a compressed time line. It does it without the reader feeling overwhelmed or annoyed. I found I was keen to pick it up to continue reading the story..Score: 4/5
