A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins Book Summary

AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The scorching new thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train.

“A Slow Fire Burning twists and turns like a great thriller should, but it's also deep, intelligent and intensely human.” – Lee Child

“Only a clairvoyant could anticipate the book’s ending” – New York Times

With the same propulsion that captivated millions of readers worldwide in The Girl on the Train and Into the Water, Paula Hawkins unfurls a gripping, twisting story of deceit, murder, and revenge.

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them. When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds. How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

Very hard to put down. This book kept you guessing throughout, all the way to the end. It made you question everything and everyone. For a fast read, I give it 5 stars. Exceptional.

Great Author. Always intriguing! Good read!

Slow moving and poorly written. How she got so popular and why i keep reading these books I’ll never know. Most writers get better with experience, but each of the last two was worse than the previous.

Captivating!. Couldn’t put my phone down

Atypical. Very interesting.

Horrible. I couldn’t keep reading. Terrible writing.

Slow burning. Fantastic book, couldn’t put it down!

A slow fire burning. Confusing but kept me reading until worked out

A Slow Fire Burning. Original plot. Loved the characters, especially Laura and Irene.

Too many plot lines. Meandering with not one plot fully developed.

A good thriller. Very well written, good characterizations and not obvious in “who did it”. A story of long held grief, love and ultimately, a need for cleansing.

Pretty good. Kept me entertained and was a fast read! Kind of forgettable though/not mind blowing

Quite a surprise. Heartbreaking.. A dark book about grief and family.

Grim but then intriguing. This book felt too dark for all that is happening in the world then it becomes very entertaining.

Entertaining and absorbing. Hawkins intermingles plot and sub-plot well. She also creates distinctive characters. It trends well with sympathetic attention on somewhat marginalized people in society—the ugly, the mentally damaged, the old. Very entertaining as well. Probably not as good as The Girl on the Train, but it would be hard to top that one.

Not my type of book.. I seem to prefer more intrigue.

Great Read. Great Read!

Took 100+ pages to get the characters sorted! Kept you guessing on who dunnit!. Took 100 pages t try

A Short Smoldering Snippet. The book was ok, but by no means anything like “ The Girl on the Train”

A Slow Fire Burning. Found the characters rather uninteresting and the plot less than thrilling.

Predictable. I pretty much had this one figured out from the start although not all details. It was heavy on the foul language, which I’m not a fan of, but overall it kept my interest.

Well, they’re all unlikeable.. Understandable, but distasteful. It was like watching a video of a child burning ants directly in the line of sight of their drunk parents. At this point, you just keep going to see if anyone gets what they deserve.

Good framework, somewhat hard to follow. I’ve read several of her books, this one was a bit too much back and forth, this way, that away for me. Too hard to follow, almost like she was trying to accomplish what “Theo” had done in his book, flipping from different time frames. Not my favorite.

Sad, sad story but kept me interested. A bit disjointed though. I literally felt the pain and grief.. Sad, sad story but kept me interested. A bit disjointed though. I literally felt the pain and grief.

Mesmerizing.. I loved this book could not put it down. Her skills in world building are unmatched, and as always the twists and turns were continuous.

Amazing Read!. Read it in two days. Very well written, keeps you guessing, has all the right hooks. Definitely put your phone on DND and enjoy the read.

She’s read a few mysteries. Among other good things, I suspect this book is a bit of an homage to Ruth Randell, especially in her work as Barbara Vine.

I love Irene. Soooo good
