“Dunmore is my new find in historical romance. Her A League of Extraordinary Women series is extraordinary.”—Julia Quinn, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“This series balances friendship, politics, history, and romance in just the right mix.”—U.S. Representative Katie Porter

Going toe-to-toe with a brooding Scotsman is rather bold for a respectable suffragist, but when he happens to be one's unexpected husband, what else is an unwilling bride to do?

London banking heiress Hattie Greenfield wanted just three things in life:

1. Acclaim as an artist.
2. A noble cause.
3. Marriage to a young lord who puts the gentle in gentleman.

Why then does this Oxford scholar find herself at the altar with the darkly attractive financier Lucian Blackstone, whose murky past and ruthless business practices strike fear in the hearts of Britain's peerage? Trust Hattie to take an invigorating little adventure too far. Now she's stuck with a churlish Scot who just might be the end of her ambitions....

When the daughter of his business rival all but falls into his lap, Lucian sees opportunity. As a self-made man, he has vast wealth but holds little power, and Hattie might be the key to finally setting long-harbored political plans in motion. Driven by an old desire for revenge, he has no room for his new wife's apprehensions or romantic notions, bewitching as he finds her.

But a sudden journey to Scotland paints everything in a different light. Hattie slowly sees the real Lucian and realizes she could win everything--as long as she is prepared to lose her heart.

Loved this book. This book is my favorite of the series so far All of them have been very good!

Ok.... I loved the first two books in this series. This book was slow. I skipped entire pages / the majority of chapters and missed nothing. The romance was good but there was a weird and unlikely turn at the end. Hoping for better luck with this author’s next book.

Excellent. I enjoyed the other books in this series and I disagree with the other reviewers about Hattie being turned into an unlikable protagonist. The romance develops well and addresses the misgivings that come with a match born of necessity. If anything is exaggerated about Hattie, it is her anger to perceived and real slights both past and present which I find wholly valid considering her age and upbringing. There is a fair amount of politics due to the mixed-rank match, but the idea of protecting the worker is relevant to the time period. There are oodles of tension and chemistry. I love a taciturn hero.

Always a pleasure. I so look forward to all of Evie Dunmore’s books. I loved this one. Might be my favorite but I may have to read the others again just to be sure.

Loved it. Great character development and story in this one! Loved learning about some history and thoroughly enjoyed the love story.

Worst of Series. Historical info seamlessly woven into a story is interesting. This series has some interesting info, but some of it is clumsily introduced to the stories, and the stories themselves suffer. Chapter 35 was a cumbersome attempt to highlight some historic info that greatly detracted from the story. These characters had a chance to be some of my favorites of the series, but they were rendered clunky and their story disjointed and unlikely in some parts.

Good. It was not my favorite of the series, however, I appreciated that Hattie grew and matured. I was wary to read this book because the comments said were not generous towards Hattie. Despite her being spoiled and a brat at the beginning, she was always kind to others. Im glad she redeemed herself.

Portrait of a Scotsman. My most favorite book in a long time. Remarkable depth of characters and conflicts. Resounding passion. LOVE THIS BOOK!!

LOVE ❤️‍🔥. Beautiful story ! My heart was shattered and restored on more than one occasion ! I love Lucian ❤️‍🔥

Preachy and left a Bad taste in mouth. Lackluster character development which was surprising since Book 2 in the series really piqued my interest in endearing Hattie , and the mysterious backstory of Lucian. I simply don’t recognize the Hattie from previous novel. Here she is insufferable, immature, spoiled and a moralizing snob. It’s everyones fault but hers, yes the oppression during that time was immense, but come on take some accountability for your own actions as an “independent young woman”. I guess it’s hard when you’re so high in your pedestal. She doesn’t miss the opportunity to demean her “lowly born” husband reminding him of where he comes from and forgetting she’s not titled either. She’s continuously punishing him and testing him for the sins of her father. Not to mention the author uses her to deliver some hitting over the head trite moralistic dialogue. I thought I was reading a historical romance novel not a gen z one. The author hastily tries to grow her character arc in the epilogue and it falls flat. Furthermore, Blackstone is reduced to a simpering mess who continuously takes his wife’s emotional abuse. I’m giving the stars I’m giving solely because Lucian’s rise from the gutter back story was moving, as were the causes he supports. I found myself more intune with his POV than the heroine’s. I continuously wanted to just read about him, and not the snob he married. Caitriona is my fave but I’m not sure I’ll be finishing the series after this bomb of a novel. So disappointing.

A different read. This was definitely its own story and unique in that way. It was not as exciting and fast paced as the first two. It became a bit sluggish at times actually. And the ending where Hattie made some questionable and scandalous decisions for that time period….didn’t really understand it or how it went with the story. Kind of bummed, this was ok.

Disappointed. I have really enjoyed this series overall and love the depth and complexity of characters. However I was really disappointed in this third book in the series. I absolutely loved Lucien and a lot of other things about this book however Hattie was a really hard character to get behind. Hattie was a snobby, spoiled, brat but I would have been ok with that if she had a growth moment and changed. Unfortunately, at the moment you expect Hattie to have a smidge of self awareness and forgiveness there is instead a major twist that is abrupt and completely unrealistic for a 1880s married couple who are in love. Really unsatisfying and so unlike what I expect from this author.

Portrait of a Scotsman. Author has good writing and characterization skills. I will not read another of her books because her writing is very didactic I would love to see her write from her heart instead of teaching us many lessons
