Pubblicate grazie al lavoro di decine di artigiani tra il 1861 e il 1868, le incisioni di Gustave Doré per la Divina Commedia riscossero da subito un grande, meritato successo, tanto da imprimere i regni d'oltretomba nell'immaginario di più generazioni. Forse solo Michelangelo, nelle sue illustrazioni perdute per la Commedia, aveva saputo rendere con energia paragonabile la plasticità tormentata dei corpi dei dannati, solo Botticelli la grazia e la leggerezza angelica dei beati. Impareggiabile resta la capacità di Doré di creare paesaggi inediti, dai mostruosi antri infernali mai toccati dal sole alla luminosità rarefatta dell'Empireo.
Questo volume riproduce in forma integrale le centotrentacinque tavole, legandole con didascalie narrative che consentono di ripercorrere il viaggio dantesco "leggendo" le immagini: un omaggio al genio di Doré e insieme un invito a esplorare la "selva" dell'opera dantesca.
