Sooley by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • John Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel. Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is a raw, young talent with big hoop dreams—and even bigger challenges off the court.

“Hard to put down ... the pages turn quickly ... building to a climax that won’t leave readers doubting whether this is a John Grisham novel.” —Associated Press

In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament. He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane. The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true.

Samuel is an amazing athlete, with speed, quickness, and an astonishing vertical leap. The rest of his game, though, needs work, and the American coaches are less than impressed.

During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village. His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp.

Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it’s just not possible. Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season. There is plenty of more mature talent and he isn’t immediately needed.

But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America. He works tirelessly on his game, shooting baskets every morning at dawn by himself in the gym, and soon he’s dominating everyone in practice. With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench. And the legend begins.

But how far can Sooley take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Gripping and moving, Sooley showcases John Grisham’s unparalleled storytelling powers in a whole new light. This is Grisham at the top of his game.

Sooley is a winner. This engaging story made me laugh out loud, cheer for Sooley, and cry at the tragedy and atrocities. I came to love the characters and wish for their success. As a college basketball fan, I enjoyed the look into that world. As with every Grisham book I’ve read, I could not put it down.

Very entertaining. A great story. I couldn’t put it down.

Awesome. Good read and touching story.

Great read!. Excellent storytelling. Great story about a young man and his connection to basketball, friendship and family. Great character development. Good pace of action, and gut retching violence is South Sudan. I recommend this book.

Sully. Entertaining and I’m not a basketball person. The parallels drawn between the worlds Sullomons lived in were informative and scary.

Sooley’s Adventure. I’ve been hooked on John Grisham novels for a very long time. When I came across his Sooley novel, I read it nonstop. I was so impressed to see that Seth Curry ( go Warriors) was included in the book because I live where the Warriors team lives. I was heartbroken upon reading that Sooley died; I wish the book would have gone on forever and Sooley would have continued into the spotlight of living out his dreams. One of my favorite books.

Sooley. What a piece of garbage. Someone should have warned his readers about this. I will never ever buy another Grisham book, and I’ve bought quite a few. Written like a high school essay, poorly constructed and a total waste of time. I want my money back.

Awesome!. Sooley was one of the best books that I have ever read. Although it wasn’t one of Grisham’s legal thrillers, this basketball story was heartwarming! The journey of Sooley from being a freshman to a basketball star was definitely surprising. And the descriptive words. Grisham always writes great books. And this is not an exception. Though a lot of people said that the ending was disappointing, it wasn’t because of the words, it was just because of the events that happened during the story end. The ending was a huge twist. Everybody predicted that Sooley would become a huge star with so many procedures done. It was actually disappointing for me too that Sooley died at the end. Plus, Sooley would’ve become a great basketball player. Overall, it was such a good read. BTW, sorry for letting you read a review this long. But I really do recommend John Grisham’s books and certainly this one. 🤩 Amazing!

“Sooley, Sooley, Sooley!” This book was impossible to put down.. You get to know the characters as if they were your friends. Your family. You cheer when they cheer and you grieve when they hurt. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I believe you will say the same!

Easily the worst book I’ve read in the last five years.. I have maybe never been so furious about a books ending. Grisham’s books have been declining, you will have to pay me to read another one. I want my money back. What an absolute waste and such a dismantling of the protagonists character in such a short time. It was, NOT believable. Lots of character development that just disappears. Are you not rich enough? Why the need to send a book to market that was simply not ready. Yuck.

Sooly. We had the privilege.of knowing about a dozen Lost Boys of Sudan when they arrived in the States in about 2010. With this reading, their stories of how their villages were burned to the ground and their subsequent lives in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya come to life. It continues to break my heart how much needless suffering there is in our world. This book and its comparison of the lives of Sooly vs his family left in the camp is accurate and heart wrenching still.

Sooley. What a ride ! A great story. Love the departure from the normal legal story lines. A really great read.

Sooley. As a sports lover, I was enthusiastic about the book and loved the way it ended.

Grisham does it again. Always good and quick reads. I have polished my shooting skills.

Not sure how to feel about it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s Grisham literature, style and speak at a every turn… but…plot twist(s) toward the end of the book made me lose faith. Read it? Yes, but you may not fall in love with it or the storyline.

Couldn’t put it down. What I expect from a Grisham work.

Use Some Discretion!. Come on people!!! I only rated this with one star because I can’t submit a review without a rating. I haven’t even read Sooley yet but I already know the ending!!! Why would anyone divulge the plot without prefacing their review with “SPOILER ALERT!!!”??? Sometimes I glance at reviews prior to reading a book, many times I don’t. With Grisham, it doesn’t matter; I read all of his books. Still, I’m disappointed. Use some discretion when writing reviews.

Don’t Make Plans. You won’t be able to put it down…

A special story. I really fell in love with Sooley and his story. Very well written and an enjoyable read for all those who no matter your interest will be completely satisfied. Thanks for sharing ... Was a delight!

Sooley. Even without being a basketball fan, reading about the character, Sooley, who came from nothing to the big “American dream” was extremely engaging. I fully recommend this read. Thanks

Our friendships and the Journey they take us on.. The story keeps you interested from beginning to end. It’s about luck and the relationships we build along the way.

A Great Read. This is my first John Grisham book and I enjoyed it. I felt that the ending went against the nature of the titular character some but it only means that the book was enjoyable enough to INVEST in the characters…

5 stars!. Absolute page turner! Sooley! Sooley!

Different. Pretty long story that turned a bit boring (not typical for Grisham) with an unexpected ending...

Amazing. Love this story.

Not impressed. The worst Grisham book I have read….and I have read them all.

Sooley. I enjoyed the details about basketball and refugee camps. The book provides interesting behind the scenes facts for both areas. Sooley is not his typical legal genre but is used to describe some immigration law facts. The book has ups and downs. Admittedly I was shocked but in the end happy I had chosen to read this book.

Excellent!. I enjoyed reading about players from a HBCU! Good job, Grisham!

A turn for the worst…. I was on the verge of giving this book at the minimum 4 stars but then “it” happened late in the book that was so completely random and out of character that it threw me off. Disappointing to think such a good fun book all of sudden took a turn for the worse.

Sooley dies of drug OD. The End Stupid book Maybe the last JG book I lol ever read.

Best book I have read in a long time!. A bit of a change from what many readers of John Grisham expect. However, one of the best books I have ever read. I was vaulted so close to the court, I could feel the sweat flying and the vibrations of feet thundering on the wooden floors. Heart warming, Heart Breaking and an intro into a world I would love to rescue. Read this book! You’ll find it impossible to stay away from.

Disappointed. Hated the turn of events towards the end, in fact I was mad at the author.

Sooley. Didn’t need all of the basketball jargon. Sooley’s ending was abrupt Like the author was tired of writing. I’m usually a fan.

Great story!. I loved this book! I became so enthralled with the characters that I cried for the last 50 pages! I love John Grisham books and this is one of his best!

Must read. Definetly was hooked after the first sentence. I’m glad too see love being shown to HBCUS for a change.

Dooley. A fantastic read, keeping you interested throughout the book. Ups and downs with a unique surprise and a great ending!!

I loved it!. Totally engaging. Not even a basketball fan, but I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

Sooley. What a piece of crap. Could have been written better by a Sports Illustrated intern with access to news reports from South Sudan. Wasted $15 DennyX!!

Sooley. An excellent sport’s story with an important humanitarian backdrop.

Spell binding. I could not put the book down.

Sooley. This story is mesmerizing and agonizing all at once. The angst I felt over the plight of Sooley’s family and his goal in helping them, and at the same time trying to navigate a new life in America kept me at the edge of my seat. I am not a sports fan and do not follow any favorite teams, and yet Mr. Grisham introduced me into the seductive world of professional basketball. I could not put the book down until it was finished. Thank you, Mr. Grisham for writing an incredible and unforgettable story. I hope aspiring athletes and agents can glean lessons learned from “having too much fun”.

Sooleyman. Wonderful story for any basketball fan. I couldn’t put it down. I also learned a lot about the refugee situation in South Sudan. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Enjoyed. Good Read, Big Screen worthy.

Surprising. Kept moving, changing locations but connected by one young man.

Awesome!!!. I could not put this book down. Stayed up the past two nights reading long into the night. If I didn’t need to work I would’ve continued to read all night. Wow. Great and tragic.

Legendary. Loved this story. As much as I love John Grisham’s legal thrillers, this book is one of my favorites.

Sooley. The book was heartwarming and I loved it. I have high recommendations for this book. Consider buying it. Even though it was a little hard because there were a lot of terms related to basketball that a lot of John Grisham and not basketball fans wouldn’t understand, it only made the read even more memorable and fun. The storyline of how Sooley became a national hero was amazing. I can’t believe the tragic ending. I can’t believe the amazing hero died because of a quite mischievous girl who gave him pills. So sad. Sooley probably didn’t have knowledge of any drugs anyway, but like, it just fits the story plot even better. Whatever. Great read overall. High recommendations. Just buy it already.

Love. Such a heroic story of a boy determined to help his family through basketball.

His worst book yet. Very boring. I understand he no longer writes his own books. I hear he hires people to write for him. It shows. Start writing your own books again. They are great when you write them.

A MISS. I think that I have read every one of Grisham’s books. The story line is impossible to believe. His worst.

Sooley. Great read, well written and keeps the reader interested and wondering what’s coming next. Interesting twist at the end. I always enjoy a Grissom book that’s sports related. I couldn’t put it down!

Fabulous read. Heartwarming well written

Captivant. J’ai lu un extrait, acheté le livre et pratiquement lu d’un trait, me suis endormi et repris au réveille maintenant je vais déjeuner

Sooley. Great story but I did not enjoy what happened to Sooley

Disappointing Ending. I suppose that the ending is somewhat realistic for some reason f the chapters but probably too optimistic fr others. Nevertheless a good rear. I learned more about basketball and wars and refugees in South Sudan.

Ugh. Grisham’s disaster. Disappointing.

Really not bad for what I think. This book was very. After purchasing new shoes that I really need I loved this book. If only for the ending it was and will always be. I fell asleep woke up had breakfast. I might read it again but I don’t know
