A cselekmény a harmincas évek Kínájában játszódik, valahol délen. Ötsárkány, az árvíz és az éhínség elől Juharfalvából a városba menekülő földönfutó kezdetben csak menedéket kap a Dahongji Rizskereskedésben, ahol úgy bánnak vele, mint egy kutyával, de miután beházasodik a gazdag kereskedőcsaládba, egyre nagyobb befolyásra tesz szert. Attól a pillanattól kezdve, hogy a rizskereskedés tulajdonosa, Feng befogadja a házába, a család elindul a visszafordíthatatlan romlás útján, és a regény végére a több generáción keresztül sikeres kereskedőcsalád a darabjaira hullik szét, amihez külső és belső tényezők egyaránt hozzájárulnak. Rothadás, kegyetlenség, gonoszság, bűn és abnormális szexualitás itatja át a regényt, nincs a történetben egyetlen szerethető szereplő sem, miközben mindezt a rizs gyönyörűen kibontott szimbóluma köré építi fel az író.
