La promessa di Yumi by Journal-Gyaw Ma Ma Lay Book Summary
Birmania, 8 marzo 1967. Yumi, giovane donna giapponese, sbarca all’aeroporto di Rangoon per ritrovare il fratello. Il padre, ufficiale dell’esercito imperiale in Birmania durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, le ha rivelato sul letto di morte di aver sposato per amore una donna del posto, di aver avuto un figlio e di averli abbandonati, suo malgrado, dopo la disfatta del 1945.
Yumi riesce nell’impresa di identificare il fratello Maung Maung che, persa la madre nei bombardamenti alleati sulla Birmania, è cresciuto nell’ostracismo generale per le sue origini e ha sviluppato violenti sentimenti antigiapponesi. L’incontro è scioccante al punto che la sorella non osa rivelargli la propria identità. Il ragazzo non accetta la presenza della giovane giapponese, ma Yumi cerca di vincere il trauma del fratello e guadagnarsi il suo affetto addentrandosi nelle usanze birmane.
Un romanzo delicato, in cui la grande scrittrice birmana Ma Ma Lay esprime i sentimenti laceranti e i problemi irrisolti – le comfort women e i “figli della guerra” – lasciati dall’occupazione giapponese, lancia un messaggio di riappacificazione tra i popoli e allo stesso tempo conduce alla scoperta della cultura e degli straordinari luoghi simbolo del Paese.
