Shadows Reel by C. J. Box Book Summary

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett and his wife, Marybeth, make separate discoveries that put the Pickett family in a pair of killers’ crosshairs in this thrilling new novel in the bestselling series.

Don’t miss the JOE PICKETT series—now streaming on Paramount+

A day before the three Pickett girls come home for Thanksgiving, Joe is called out for a moose-poaching incident that turns out to be something much more sinister: a local fishing guide has been brutally tortured and murdered.  At the same time, Marybeth opens an unmarked package at the library where she works and finds a photo album that belonged to an infamous Nazi official. Who left it there? And why?

She learns that during World War II, several Wyoming soldiers were in the group that fought to Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat in the Alps—and one of them took the Fuhrer’s personal photo album. Did another take this one and keep it all these years?  When a close neighbor is murdered, Joe and Marybeth face new questions: Who is after the book? And how will they solve its mystery before someone hurts them…or their girls?

Meanwhile, Nate Romanowski is on the hunt for the man who stole his falcons and attacked his wife. Using a network of fellow falconers, Nate tracks the man from one city to another. Even as he grasps the true threat his quarry presents, Nate swoops in for the kill—and a stunning final showdown.

Way to much political stuff.. I do not read Joe to get involved the far left and right maneuvers. It is also far fetched beyond belief.

Ehhhh…..just ok…... I usually love Joe Picket stories~ not so much this time. Not much suspense or adventure- no interesting characters and a whole lot of Marybeth. Reads more like a short story than a novel. Sadly I just didn’t enjoy this one much.

Disappointing. This latest Joe Pickett novel is thin soup compared to the better of CJ Box’s previous titles, and the introduction of contemporary social issues is contrived and unconvincing. The same could be said for throwing in a Nazi connection, a failed, desperate attempt to add some substance to the plot. Let’s hope for a return to form the next time around.

Not like the other books. I have really enjoyed the series with Joe Pickett. However, this book seemed to be written in haste. The depth was lacking and the storyline was much more simple compared to the other books in the series.

Great storytelling!. The historic references to the artifacts are fascinating and so up to date with today’s technology and happenings. The plot and characters as usual are fabulously interwoven together.

Shadows Reel. An excellent read, and an accurate portrayal of Antifa, the Portland debacle and the losers and criminals that have virtually destroyed Portland and other cities that have bowed to the Soros influence. How’s that working out for you? Juxtaposing that story with one about Nazi’s shows how similar they are. Bravo C.J.!

Riveting story!. Great story that will keep you reading all night long! Hav to read another one now because they are so good!

Shadows review. Believe it when other people said this is the worst CJ Box book. I have read them all and without a doubt this book was mailed in, it’s horrible reading

Not horrible, but not one C.J. Box best. Enjoyed reading the novel and didn’t put it down much until completion. Though truly not some of Box’s best. The last 2-3 Joe Pickett novels were some of favorite. But not to worry Mr. Box. I’m not ready to give up on you. Looking forward to next Joe Pickett story and hope that it includes more action from Joe and Nate!

Shadows Real. Well done. A great reader and excellent Joe Pickett thriller!

Disappointed. Way too much information before the story really took place. Waste of $$$

Shadows Reel. Joe Pickett is an interesting character and some stories are good. Much of the narrative here is absurd with stereotypes for characters. Good writing though.

Worst book in the Pickett series. I enjoy the Joe Pickett books to the point I have read them all twice. I doubt I will even finish this one. Jack Reacher fans will note the quality fall off when Lee Child turned authorship of future novels over to his brother. This book feels like something similar happened in that the normal flavor and intangibles of a Pickett novel simply are not there, and the story is not engrossing. I am not quite halfway through this book and have lost all interest.

The only thing wrong with the Joe Pickett novels is that they are to short!. CJ Box holds my interest from first paragraph to last sentence!

No one bats a thousand.. Not up to Mr Box’s normal excellent standards.

Fun read!. Good story telling and lots of action. Movie?

Great story. One of the best Joe Pickett stories to date! The author created several unique and interesting story lines within this book - a little more complicated and intellectual than prior books, in my opinion. I thought it was a great book!

I want my money back. Absolute garbage read. Story was dull and never developed. Actually there were two pointless storylines in the book. I will be hard pressed to purchase another CJ Box novel.

Do not recommend anymore…. Cheap political tale disguised as mystery story. Sadly, C.J.Box became one of the politically poisoned writers and his books are getting harder and harder to enjoy.

Shadetree101. Read a few of the reviews to see if I was the only one disappointed……yes I’m afraid. Difficult to getting ‘into it’ as per previous books. Glad to see Nate into it a little more but lacked depth to “his” storyline. Obviously a new character for future books with Geronimo being introduced. PC culture intro. The Antifa intro was lame as was going to Seattle and Portland. Lived in Seattle for decades and took a wrong turn onto I5 south going over the river and ended down on East Burnside. What a dump area even 40 years ago. The Nazi thing? Seriously? Why? No better bizarre ideas came to mind except nowadays everyone is a Nazi that doesn’t agree with you. Lame but the PC culture is alive and well but not really red meat for a great storyline we’ve come to expect about a wayward game warden in wonderful Wyoming. Denver? Why? Get back to your roots Dude. That’s what made your writings fun interesting and well…..different….from a great standpoint. If you’re having trouble with a story line or two I would be glad to collaborate being an author myself. Giddy up Partner…

Penrose. Just OK. Joe is better when he stays in the timber..

Great book. Box an outstanding writer. Two related stories, both were very good. I am sorry when Box’s works are over.

Disappointed. Have read every book in the Joe Pickett series and loved them all until this one, it did not hold my interest, thought the two different story lines were far fetched. The story is best when it sticks to the basics, his family, the wilderness, and game warden issues. Wyoming game warden mixed with BLM and Antifa in Portland/Seattle just doesn't work.

Uneven. I love this series, but this one fell a bit short. Two different story lines-far fetched but so what, this is a novel not history. Much time was spent developing these plots but then both were concluded in just several sentences or paragraphs.

Always a Great Read. I always enjoy the adventures of Joe and Nate and can’t wait to start the next one!

Love Joe P but surprised at this error.. Always love Joe P. Sad that there’s an error by Mary Beth. 11 million killed in the holocaust. 6 million Jews. 5 million non- Jews. Please edit

Excellent. What a great story

Becoming too political for my taste, last book I’ll buy. I’ve enjoyed this authors books in spite of the recent trends into right wingish political nonsense. However the distortion of antifa and what it stands for (and it’s purported intent to overthrow world order/democracy) is just going to far. No more for me. It takes away my delight with Joe and his family.

Ehh. 2 Stars. Disappointed in this one. Box didn’t live up the the remarkable level I have come to expect. It felt rushed and I had high expectations for the Thanksgiving setting that never came close. It almost seemed like he put two short stories together and called it a novel. That said, the Pickett series is remarkably good. I’ve effectively caught up with just the current one to read. Then it we mean waiting a year. I hope Box gets back where he belongs. Are his other series good? I really didn’t think very much of the current TV series based on them.

A fun read …. Perhaps the best in the series

No substance. Writers are quite often running two plot lines in their books. In this case it is as if outlines for two books that were not fleshed out were used in a rush to publish something. Let Joe be Joe.

Book review. Another great read!

Shadows. A good story, maybe his best work.

A Let Down. Clearly the world's populist movement influenced this installment of Joe Pickett as well as the current divisions within the USA. But it didn't have any deep insight into the characters' values or their viewpoint on how to cope with the divisions. Not my favorite Joe Pickett installment.

A big fan’s disappointment. I have read every book in the series and eagerly awaited each new release, but I did not particularly care for this one. I have enjoyed the previous books in the series for their excellent character development and stories centered around Joe’s life as a game warden in Wyoming and Nate’s larger than life adventures as an outlaw turned falconer entrepreneur. For the first two thirds of this book, I received nothing of what I was looking for. While the end was reasonably interesting, nothing in this book compared to the ten or more prior novels. This book took me a month and a half to finish—just could not get motivated. I will not be in a hurry for the next volume but I will miss the series.

Shadows Reel. Was ok until the author made some political comparisons to Trump & his family - derogatory and unnecessary….won’t be reading anymore of his stuff….

Wrong turn…. I have every book in this series. Box has bought into the fascists trying to destroy this country. Done.
