Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • The award-winning, best-selling author of Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel returns with a novel of art, time travel, love, and plague that takes the reader from Vancouver Island in 1912 to a dark colony on the moon five hundred years later, unfurling a story of humanity across centuries and space.

“One of [Mandel’s] finest novels and one of her most satisfying forays into the arena of speculative fiction yet.” —The New York Times

Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Two centuries later a famous writer named Olive Llewellyn is on a book tour. She’s traveling all over Earth, but her home is the second moon colony, a place of white stone, spired towers, and artificial beauty. Within the text of Olive’s best-selling pandemic novel lies a strange passage: a man plays his violin for change in the echoing corridor of an airship terminal as the trees of a forest rise around him.

When Gaspery-Jacques Roberts, a detective in the black-skied Night City, is hired to investigate an anomaly in the North American wilderness, he uncovers a series of lives upended: The exiled son of an earl driven to madness, a writer trapped far from home as a pandemic ravages Earth, and a childhood friend from the Night City who, like Gaspery himself, has glimpsed the chance to do something extraordinary that will disrupt the timeline of the universe.

A virtuoso performance that is as human and tender as it is intellectually playful, Sea of Tranquility is a novel of time travel and metaphysics that precisely captures the reality of our current moment.

Sea of Tranquility (Emily St. John Mandel) Book Reviews

Sea of TranquiltyThis review is hard to write because this book is hard to describe. I enjoyed reading it and the characters were interesting and had depth. The novel is timely and makes you think about life and how we impact others. And I love time travel fantasies that seem real..Score: 5/5

Sea of TranquilityAn amazing novel! Wonderful characters, an engaging plot, and for a book about time travel- not confusing! I enjoyed it immensely!.Score: 5/5

Thanks EmilyThis was my second book from Emily St-John Mandel, the first was Station Eleven. Again, great characters and a fantastic ability to weave the plot through multiple channels. I’m afraid I will read all her books. As I mention in my review of Station Eleven, I read a lot and it’s been a long time an author owned my attention so completely. Thanks Emily.Score: 5/5

Finished in one sittingI found this novella to be a gripping page turner and both unbearably sad but also life affirming. It is best read after The Glass Hotel given the character overlaps and to a lesser extent Station 11 given its parallels with the novel within the novella..Score: 5/5

What in the world did I just readFrom a college educated, full time working mother in her 40s and this is proof I can read just about anything. None of characters relatable. Time travel, pandemic and living on moons. My next stop is to read authors biography as this seems like this should be comic book material. Does not live up to hype..Score: 2/5

Quick ReadFlew through this one in a couple hours! I was pleasantly surprised by the very unique storyline, and yet it was still realistic enough to be believable. If you don’t like time travel as a plot device, multiple time periods, or science fiction then I definitely wouldn’t choose this to read next. That being said I personally really enjoyed this and have never read a book like it. I plan to reread it again within the next year before the series is released!.Score: 5/5
