East of Eden by John Steinbeck Book Summary

In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden “the first book,” and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Adam Trask came to California from the East to farm and raise his family on the new rich land. But the birth of his twins, Cal and Aaron, brings his wife to the brink of madness, and Adam is left alone to raise his boys to manhood. One boy thrives nurtured by the love of all those around him; the other grows up in loneliness enveloped by a mysterious darkness.

First published in 1952, East of Eden is the work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. A masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a powerful and vastly ambitious novel that is at once a family saga and a modern retelling of the Book of Genesis.

First book I have read in years. Enjoy it very much

Masterpiece. Steinbeck’s best book

Awful. Horrible. Will never get that three months of my life back. Do not waste your time like I wasted mine. If i could give it zero stars, I would.

Not Proofread Very Well. This book is beautiful and gripping but this specific version has several typos throughout.

There’s a good reason why Steinbeck is so highly esteemed. This novel is worthy of every sincere reader. Bravo Mr. Steinbeck. Thou mayest!

Speechless.. Incredible, amazing, unbelievable. Makes you want to be a better person.

What a great classic!. I read this book as a high school student, and liked it, however reading it in my 50s was complete joy for me.

What a treasure. Powerful read as a young adult and again in middle age. Truly a classic

East of Eden. Like asking a potter to write a review of a Ming case. This is art, in its purest form.

Steinbeck at his best. I may never read a better book.

Excellence!. This was an amazing read; every word leaves you craving for more! I’m incredibly happy that Ben Shapiro recommended those book, I will definitely read this again!

Brilliant. It’s a heart wrenching and a heart warming tale of human emotions at the same time . We humans deal with love and hate and good and bad and everything emotional at the same time and the author has such command over the language and his expression is that much more true to heart .! Simply amazing!!

Uplifting. One of the great store that Steinbeck Produced!

Staple of literature. One of the greatest books I’ve ever read. Wish it never ended. Extremely addictive and profound. Everyone must read this.

Always a Steinbeck fan, but.... This is a tragic and beautiful story of real people, so well-defined and descriptive. Every time I put it down, I wished I could continue...more so than any book since his 'Grapes of Wrath' in high school. If not THE best, it is certainly one of the very best novels I have ever read.
