Finding Me by Viola Davis Book Summary

“It’s clear from the first page that Davis is going to serve a more intimate, unpolished account than is typical of the average (often ghost-written) celebrity memoir; Finding Me reads like Davis is sitting you down for a one-on-one conversation about her life, warts and all.”—USA Today

“[A] fulfilling narrative of struggle and success….Her gorgeous storytelling will inspire anyone wishing to shed old labels.”—Los Angeles Times

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.

Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

Loved it!!. Inspiring for anyone fights with self-doubt or past traumas. Great book for up and coming artist such as myself. See you soon V!

she is honest and true to herself. Viola gives you all the details of her life in such great description. She doesn’t hold back and show how never giving up will make a difference.

Viola is me!. I read this book in 2 days! She speaks for all of us dark skinned women with a story to tell. She is raw. She is real. She is living out her truth as she heals herself and lives a life she fully deserves. Today I found a bit more courage to keep fighting. I fell in love with Viola all over again. She is me.

Finding Me. What an incredible memoir. As a white person and a retired really good Therapist, I thought I was pretty enlightened about racism, poverty and trauma. Yet I learned several remarkable, profound and brand new life changing “things” that I had never ever known before. Thank you Viola Davis. You are beautiful in every way. ❤️

Finding Me. The first 15-20 pages of the book were tough for me to get through. After that, it was a great read. I know that Viola Davis encountered barriers that I can not conceive if. That being said, I was able to relate in a small sense to some of her struggles. Both as a woman and as someone with a chronic medical condition, there were places where I said, I totally get where she is! Great read both as a woman and as a reminder of how much further our society has to go!

Viola’s book-Finding Me. This book captivated my attention from the beginning. I couldn’t put it down!!Viola’s story gives permission to tell our own story. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book!

Wow. I’ve been crying for 10 minutes after finishing. Not to mention wheat I cried throughout the book. Wow, just wow. Thank you.

Must read. So powerful, so honest & real.

Finding Me. Viola Davis- what a life story! It’s amazing the the trials she went through to become the amazing person she is today. Well written and inspiring.

Truly touching.. This story moved me and honestly just made my admiration & love for Viola stronger. Must read.

This of a beautiful story. I loved her honesty and venerability

Brave. Viola’s bravery in writing this left me in awe. Even the writing is real; as if I was with her in one of those soulful conversations with someone you trust. No over-constructed narrative. Although one never reaches the end of one’s journey (except when we leave the physical world…), this memoir reads like the culmination of an important phase of jer journey.

INCREDIBLE. This book touched my heart and soul in a way I didn’t know was possible. I’ve loved Viola since I saw her in HTGAWM and after reading this book, I respect her even more. She is a true inspiration. The raw emotions I felt and identified with were so surprising but so cathartic. I highly recommend you read this book and I promise you will not want to put it down.

Finding Me. Brutally honest

Raw and Inspirational!. Viola Davis has given us her all. Her journey from abject poverty to the life she lives today is nothing short of a miracle. Poverty, classism, colorism, and racism were a constant in her life, yet she still prevailed. There are uncomfortable truths being told in this memoir, but there is also joy, as Viola finds her way, finds her love, and finds herself.

VIOLA DONE DONE IT. I cried SO hard reading this book. The self actualization and the the realization of God’s work in hindsight was SO good at the end! I mean I read this book in just a few sittings and I am amazed at the word play and just the concept of finding SELF!! That’s why it’s entitled FINDING ME!!

Incredible transforming. I could not put this book down! The most honest and heart wrenching recalling of one’s life. I cried, laughs and celebrated her joy. As a read this book my heart understood her struggle. The best part is Viola clawed her way out to happiness and fulfillment. She didn’t wait for someone to give it to her. She fought tooth and nail to get there. Thank you for sharing your life story. I felt, seen, heard and valued through the pages of this book and brought me forgiveness, understanding and peace. Thank you Viola!

I loved every minute. Words can’t explain how much I love this book.

Intense. Such a great book! Detailed, mind blowing, I would’ve never thought Viola experienced such much trauma. It’s just amazing to read how she overcame It all, and her perseverance to achieve her goals and become so successful. Great job!

A story of love and resilience. Absolutely beautiful. Heartbreaking. A story of triumph, she weaves all of her experiences to find a deeper sense of purpose. Best biography I’ve read all year.

Thank you!. Thank you for writing this book and being YOU! From watching Oprah + Viola on Netflix, to buying you book on my immediately, because I couldn’t WAIT to read it. I feel empowered by you and I’m amazed at all your work.

God Is Faithful! Outstanding Work!. I loved the rawness and in-depth accounts of Ms. Davis’ childhood! What a life! So proud to see how far her life as catapulted. She manifested her future! So thankful for having the opportunity to read her story. God Is Faithful!

Finding Me. Loved the book! Gut wrenchingly honest!

Inspiring!. Great, inspiring, uplifting!

Breathtaking. Couldn’t put it down.

Beautifully written stories of perseverance and healing.. I really enjoyed this book. Her stories of poverty and different kinds of abuse resonated with my life. I was rooting for her throughout the book. It was really insightful to see all of Viola’s life experiences that have shaped her into the successful actor that she is.

Must read. A portrait of courage, fear, and resilience. It is also a reminder that our world has so much work to do. Racism still exists and impacts even those at the top of their profession. Riveting read.

Powerful, Humbling… breathtaking. Truly a “diamond in the rough.” I have not watched “How To Get Away With Murder,” and I am glad I did not prior to reading this book. I feel after reading this, I cannot help but take the feels this book created inside me to not just “watch” HTGAWM, but to actually see it. See her. This is a book every human needs to read.

Desigates. 10/10 This book is highly recommended

Triumphant. Viola Davis book about her life is so interesting. The openness and honesty about her hardships and successes and how she broke into Hollywood is beautifully told. It just brings to mind the cliche saying anything is possible.

A must read for all young ladies and women, especially brown and black ones. Such an authentic story of struggle, survival, resilience, healing, self love, growth, and self actualisation!!! It is a well written and deeply captivating autobiography. It includes lots of wisdom and is a worthwhile read for all young ladies and women, especially brown and black ones.

Review. Loved it !

Loved this!. Beautiful!

Loved it!. Awesome life story of an amazing woman’s journey out of poverty and abuse. I didn’t want it to end. I hope she’s planning to write a part two at some point. Wonderful, powerful, brutally honest autobiography. Read it!

Beautifully real. Absolutely wonderful, authentic, and real.

Finding me. Tender and raw at the same time this biography had me at the edge of my seat reading like it was the only thing I could do. I specially love her description of forgiveness of family and acceptance of a past that is simply gone but had left trauma and good memories at the same time. Beautiful work . Love miss Viola!

Excellent & Highly Recommend!!!. I saw Viola’s interview with Oprah on Netflix about her new memoir and I was transfixed by her story. I immediately bought the audiobook and listened to it. It’s one of the top biographies I’ve read/listened to. Viola’s story is extremely compelling, raw, poignant, and insightful. To me, it’s on the level of Maya Angelou’s autobiographical series, starting with I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I can’t recommend it enough.

Inspiring!!. I’m not someone who reads a lot but this book immediately captivated me and it took me on a journey! Super proud of Viola and her progress, she’s an amazing actor. I’ve learned so much from her about self confidence and loads more just from reading this.

Totally Moving and Enlightening. Reading Viola’s story was heartbreaking and amazing. Her determination to become who she is. The strength and courage to get up every day knowing that she would face struggles. I have a much deeper respect for her and all she has done. I highly recommend this book.

Fantastic Read. Absolutely loved this book!! Viola is one of my favorite female actresses!! You certainly do have it...keep pushing your way through!!

Honest and uplifting. I read this because I sometimes find myself feeling like I am the most unfortunate creature to graze the earth. I feel unwanted and rejected in my existence and I heard about this book from a friend and wanted to know if anyone that I deemed successful could have come up from similar beginnings as I. While reading this, I cried. It gave me great hope to know that there is hope for me and no matter how outcast I am I can still lead a happy successful life.

Great Read. Wow….What a phenomenal woman to put her life story on paper. I resonated with every page. I laughed, cried and felt so many emotions. Best book I’ve read in years. Thank you Viola❤️

I can read this over and over again. Mrs. Davis is raw and real in this book. I love it because I can identify with a lot of what she speaks of as her truth. We must all learn to forgive self.

Finding Me. Good reading

Fear and Forgiveness. This was a tough read for me. It is only in the last ten years or so that I have begun to understand the tangible differences between my life experiences and those of the Black women I know or have admired. The first time in my life that I felt overwhelmed by fear was the Cuban Missile Crisis. The first time I felt grievous anger at my status was when my ex was able to sell my car without my knowledge. The first time I felt a sickening shame was when I was very publicly fired by people I thought of as friends, but who did not care “why” there was a problem, but only that their own positions were threatened. I now know that many, most, some, enough women of color have felt those same life altering emotions on a daily basis. Ms. Davis has written a singularly stirring and powerful wide screen text book for those in the white community who can’t even begin to imagine where the anger and rage expressed by Blacks and Hispanics came from.

Must read. Honesty and vulnerability = great read.

Finding Peace. Viola Davis gives us a lot to ponder during her retelling of her past through present. We are asked to reckon with colorism, trauma, and the required truth telling on the journey to self acceptance. With hers there is so much pain that it is hard to make it from page to page. Viola Davis reminds us through woeful memories that the body keeps the score. That same past primed her for playing the lead in “How to get away with murder.” Despite all the hurt she underscores for us that “forgiveness is giving up all hope of a different past.“ With great humility Davis gives us an inside look at the climb from raw talent to award winning esteem. Hers is a journey to the understanding that the process of “Finding Yourself” begins with first speaking buried truths. The types of revelations that humble you and show us how we lie to ourselves in order to move forward.

Life is bumpy. This booked helped me process parts of my childhood that I often just down deep. The way she shared her life was inspiring!!! I hope one day I can share a part of my life and help others to understand that you can overcome the bumps in your life.

Hands Down Best Memoir. Wow! Speechless, Inspiring, and overjoyed! Viola's traumatic childhood experience is a reminder that you're not alone. Secondly, her struggles inspire you to push through! Overall, battles and live now, happily, in peace, or stand out and give grace.

Loved this!. I would recommend this book to everyone! Mrs. Davis was vulnerable in a way that made me evaluate myself and my journey. A well deserved EGOT for a beautiful memoir!

A captivating and worthy read!!!. This is an absolutely heart-wrenching read about Viola Davis’ life and all that has shaped her to become among one of the best actors on stage, tv and film. This is an honest memoir of Ms. Davis’ rise from obscurity to international acclaim. The author shares the brutality of her early experiences in life and how she constructively channeled her emotions and early experiences into her acting, using these experiences as fuel for the characters she’d played. Well written, this book takes the reader on Viola’s journey from her harrowing early years to her success, both personally and professionally. A highly recommended read!!!

Captivating. I flew through this very honest and eye-opening story. I found her life fascinating. I found her descriptions of being an actress and what she does to find a character changed the way I look at a performance. And I now need to go watch or rewatch everything she has done with fresh perspective

I like this book!. I like this book and everything that Viola Davis does. She is a person that is truly is an inspiration as she comes from a poor family and has been able to become an accomplished acclaimed actress. What stands her from the crowd is that she understands her profession. She knows the impact a dark skin actress can have in a role that society tries to box into a stereotype. She is gifted and clever in using her influence to change the narrative of dark black skin women on screen. She shows their vulnerability as women on screen and enhances their complexities in their character on film and television. I can’t wait to see what she will do next!

Simply compelling. This is a must read about survival
