In the Silence by M.R. Mackenzie Book Summary

Anna Scavolini hasn’t set foot in Glasgow for ten years – and she’s not short of reasons…

On her first night back in town, what should have been the start of a relaxing Christmas getaway takes a decidedly macabre turn when she stumbles upon an old flame, Andrew Foley, bleeding to death on the snow-clad slopes of Kelvingrove Park.

Who killed Foley in such a brutal manner – and why? If the police have any leads, they’re keeping them under wraps. Convinced that Foley was deliberately targeted rather than the victim of a random attack, Anna begins her own investigation, and in so doing unearths a trail of long-buried secrets, leading back to a crime committed over a decade ago.

A crime so unspeakable its perpetrators are prepared to take their silence to the grave.

In the Silence is a fast-paced, compelling crime mystery which will appeal to fans of authors like Mark Billingham, Stuart MacBride and Mark Edwards.

In the Silence (M.R. Mackenzie) Book Reviews

In The SilenceThis story grabbed me by the throat and didn’t let go!.Score: 5/5

Unconvincing and at some point just ridiculousThis novel started out interestingly-paced and with intrigue in the introduction. I did not find the protagonist, Anna, as irritating as other reviewers or unlikable, but she became quite unbelievable as the story progressed. It is absurd to think that a PhD educated woman would go tracing around playing amateur detective, forgetting to eat and bathe, and making such unwise sexual decisions when for some reason off of her medication. The arrests by Glaswegian police and strip search was just stupid and offensive, as well as entirely unnecessary. What I found most reprehensible was the portrayal of the gang rape of Jenny in the story and the subsequent representation of this young woman losing her mind and existing in an effectively vegetative state for 25 years. It was also ridiculous to share a story of Anna similarly being relatively casually raped by a stranger in high school, seemingly forgetting about it for 10 years, and apparently being diagnosed with bipolar disorder requiring lithium. For shame on you, male author Michael Mackenzie — this is a horrific portrayal of a very serious societal issue. The Victor character is also stupidly developed and not believable in the end. The Zoe/Carol lesbian relationship was also a bit of a non sequitur at the end and added nothing to the overarching story. The Glasgow countryside descriptions were enjoyable, and the local dialect prose of some characters was moderately entertaining and added some authenticity. There were minor errors in some geography, though — surprising for a local/native author..Score: 3/5
