Horse by Geraldine Brooks Book Summary

“Brooks’ chronological and cross-disciplinary leaps are thrilling.” —The New York Times Book Review

“Horse isn’t just an animal story—it’s a moving narrative about race and art.” —TIME

“A thrilling story about humanity in all its ugliness and beauty . . . the evocative voices create a story so powerful, reading it feels like watching a neck-and-neck horse race, galloping to its conclusion—you just can’t look away.” —Oprah Daily

Winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, and the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award · Finalist for the Chautauqua Prize · A Massachusetts Book Award Honor Book

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse—one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

Delightful. Every bit as exciting as Seabiscuit and then some. I live in Lexington and see this horse just about every day. He is on a sign and he is blue. I knew little about him until reading Horse. The discovery, education and enlightenment I received from this book makes that blue horse come alive.

Horse. I have a very deep love of horses and had two of them growing up. This was a wonderful book and I was once again immersed in my life long love of them.

Not just for horse people. Geraldine Brooks never disappoints. Meticulously researched & crafted. A beauty of a book that compels the reader to keep turning the pages while thoughtfully considering every character.

Horse. Masterfully written and well researched. A pleasure to read.

Amazing book, one of the best I have read. I loved this book, more than I can express. Not just her equestrian history during the Antebellum, but her depiction of racism in the present tense was incisive and important. I am surprised that she did not make mention of how she came about describing what happened to Theo. What inspired her to write it.

Excellent!. Beautifully written and very timely.

Just OK. The horse specifics seemed simplified and trivialized — a mere afterthought that made the story lack authenticity.

Perfect book. I love this book. Horses and historical function. I perfect match for me.

Wish it stayed focused on Lexington. The Lexington storyline was amazing, I wish that was the focus of the book in its entirety. Instead the author piled on every current issue of our era: racism, sexism, global warming, police brutality, homosexuality. Then she finished the book up with starting of covid. I am excited to learn more of Lexington so for that I’m thankful. While I am an avid horse lover and have many friends & family that are, I’d recommend skipping and just reading about Lexington.

Truly one of the best books I have ever read- I learned so much- truly fantastic!. Nothing I didn’t like!

Horse. This had me hooked throughout. Now I want to read more of her books.

Amazing Horse & Story. As the author said in the afterword, this is a book not just of a magnificent thoroughbred racehorse and later stud, but of the times in which the Horse lived. Wonderful writing and wonderful to read.

How do I get the book to open again?. I’m still reading the book but I can’t seem to get it back.

Excellent read. This book has a lot of history and fascinating information about horse racing and black jockeys. There is a story woven through it which keeps you reading. This is one of the best books I’ve read in quite a while.

Horse. Excellent, couldn’t put it down.

Great Book. Really enjoyed this story.

Horse. I love this book

Horse. Really loved this story, BUT stop this anti Trump narrative. The modern characters were contrived. I guessed the modern character’s role and ending immediately after being introduced. This wrecked the book for me.

Excellent. Loved this book. Very well written.

Refreshing, enlightening, enthralling.. Strong historical fiction yet very captivating. Reads like a friend telling us a great story that is filled with mystery and excitement. It also weaves in the realities of racism in the mid to late 1800’s and shows us how this racism is still happening today. Great animal characters that give love and loyalty unconditionally.

Horse. Excellent. Excellent. Well developed in every way

Awesome tale of the power of the relationship of a man and a horse. Great read for any Horse Enthusiast!

Awesome story teller. I love everything she writes. Her stories are informing while her characters are appealing.

Historically Facinating. Having spent a good portion of my adult life in the business of breading and raising thoroughbred horses, I found Horse to be extremely informative not only regarding Lexington but also regarding Scott and Troye. Brooks’ story encouraged me to delve into the history of this period of horse racing. Sadly, I found many of Ms. Brooks’ other characters to be gratuitous and pandering to issues of race and homosexuality.

Horse is a wonderful read, full of heart and history.. I loved this story and her excellent writing - the direct and indirect portrayals of slavery, and both the fictional characters of Jess and Theo. The author makes a fine point about modern racism, but I was terribly unhappy with Theo’s fate. I learned so much about racing and thoroughbred horses and was glad to learn that it was all factual. Truly a great work of historical fiction.

A masterpiece of historical fiction. This is just a fabulous book. From beginning to end. The characters, the interwoven nature of three simultaneous storylines from different eras, and the well researched historical background make this a page turner. Hard to put down. A great read.

Horse. It was hard to stayed focused in some parts of the story. The story was interesting, but jumping back in forth between the 19th to the 20th century, was hard to follow. A lot of players to remember.

You ruined a good beginning. A brilliant storyline marred in the end by modern hysterical views of racism.

Horse. I really enjoyed this book. I was initially not interested in horses, but this book goes way beyond a story about a horse it connects 19th century with 21st century credibly interesting!

Contrived. The Author takes us along for a wonderful look and “feel” of the early history of horse racing and the role of African-American horsemen. However, the connection of current events to the story line seems contrived. Still, well worth reading.

Historical fiction at its best. Spellbinding book that I couldn’t put down! It held my interest through every twist and turn of events.

Horse. I enjoyed the book very much until the end , when it became more about modern day racial issues instead of about horses. That story line might do better in a different book. Brooks’ writing style is very good, drawing the reader into not wanting to put the book down.

Horse is a worthwhile read. I really enjoyed this book. The descriptive writing style Of the era along with character development of the the horse and trainer bond made me feel very invested in their lives. I now have a greater understanding of the history of horse racing in Kentucky.

Not just about a horse. This was a great book to read! Lots of history and keeps you entertained!

Horse. As an avid horse lover & history buff, I found this story moving and riveting.

5 stars. Wonderful book, interesting and provocative! A must read for certain.

Preachy and politically biased. If you love stories about how all blacks are victims and all whites are racist, you might enjoy this book. I don’t enjoy a lecture when I’m in the mood to be entertained. A few jabs at Donald Trump are included as well.

Shameful Agenda. What a biased book. Took what could have made a wonderful story, but then covered every possible political agenda she could thing of, to create division in our culture.
