The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager Book Summary

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a most-anticipated summer book by USA Today, People, E! News, Cosmopolitan, PureWow, CNN.com, New York Post, CrimeReads, POPSUGAR, and more

The bestselling author of Final Girls and Survive the Night is back with his “best plot twist yet.” (People, "Best Summer Books")

Be careful what you watch for . . .

Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.

One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey immediately suspects Tom of foul play. What she doesn’t realize is that there’s more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces.

Packed with sharp characters, psychological suspense, and gasp-worthy plot twists, Riley Sager’s The House Across the Lake is the ultimate escapist read . . . no lake house required.

Poor read with a bizarre ending. One of the worst books I’ve read in a long long time. You keep waiting for it to get better but it never does. Don’t waste your time with this one.

Mystery? Thriller? Should be Fantasy.. Plays out like a mystery until the entirely silly twist. It may as well have been “and it was all a dream” for the amount of setup and red herrings wasted by the magical plot twist. A waste of decent, fast paced writing. Also, when a person drinks a handle of booze daily, if they just stop, they won’t be suddenly sober, they’ll be in dangerous withdrawal (but that’s the least magical plot device).

Surprise. Unexpected twists that kept you reading for more. You might think you know what’s going on, but you’ll realize you don’t at the end.

What was that???. Boring turned into bizarre. The author just threw in every idea she could think of for the end. Even something supernatural, when the rest of the book hasn't an inkling of it. Do not recommend in the least.

Very suspenseful!. Couldn’t put it down!

A Subplot Gone Amuck. It might have worked as an interesting, engrossing thriller….MIGHT HAVE…. Evil living in the murky depths of a lakeside getaway is one thing…Having that evil take over the dying essence of a drowning person and then incorporating that subplot into the main narrative was just incredible to me and totally ruined the potential for intrigue. No “Rear Window” here!

3/4 great….. Well, this was a great book until some goofy supernatural stuff was thrown in…

Cheap plot twist. This was a paranormal/spiritual slap to the face. The author took a cheap plot twist, so readers beware. This is likely not what you’re expecting either, but the final pages were 100% expected.

The House Across the Lake. Terrible book. Do not waste your money.

Great until the end. 1st review I’ve ever written. Loved the book, couldn’t wait til I had time each night to read it...until I got towards the end. Such a let down, was almost like a different author finished it. Couldn’t even end up finishing ut🙁

What was that?. Possible spoiler. This should have been in the science fiction genre. Liked most of the book until it took a very bizarre turn, then wondered what I was even reading. If that whole section was cut out I would have loved this book as others have. A twist in a mystery/thriller book that is not for all.

Overall good. I enjoyed this book. Sager is a favorite author of mine and my expectations were met. I enjoyed the multiple twists and plot lines but felt like the final twist was a bit weird as it was a complete shift in genre. Overall, I would recommend reading it. It kept me on my toes!!

Quick & good read!. I couldn’t put this book down. It keeps you on your toes and guessing until the end. Loved it!

The house across the lake. The most disappointing book I have ever read!!! A decent story at first but it took an abrupt turn into craziness!! What a waste of time!!!!!

Utterly Stupid. See above

Entertaining. Loved the twist.

The House Across the Lake. After the first half I had a rating of 4 in mind. By the end, it has a rating of 1. Why in the world did the author turn this thriller with potential into a poorly written body snatching, mystical tale? The author will go on my DNR list.

Slow. This book took me to long to read. I can’t not finish a book so I powered through. Very repetitive. I was hoping the alcoholism would play a bigger part in the twist. Twist came and was shocked yet very disappointed. Worth skipping to the last 100 pages or so.

Shocking. I LOVED IT!! Now I’m a picky reader when it comes to mystery books but this one is amazing! My new favorite mystery book!!! The way it was written is confusing at first but the more you read the more it starts making sense, the more you simply can’t put it down. I would recommend you bookmark the “NOW” sections of the books because they will help you piece everything together. When I thought the twists and turns finally stopped… the biggest one happened, the one Casey has suspected from the beginning !!!! Everyone needs to read this book!!!

Struggle to get through. My least favorite Sager book by far, slow read, too much fluff, and horrible plot.

I was gripped but it took a turn I thought was bizarre and cheap. I was gripped but it took a turn I thought was bizarre and cheap. Good storytelling though.

Eye rolling towards the end. Too much unrealistic events towards the end of the book. Started to drag out too long.

3.9. 3.9

Awful. One of the most disappointing books I've ever read. The ending or 'twist' was laughable. Don't waste your time.

Loved this book!. Wild ride! Couldn’t put it down!

The House Across the Lake. The start was rather slow but once it really got going it was hard to put down. The final 200+ pages were top notch.

Great twists!!. I love when I am reading a book and the twist completely catches me by surprise. Riley Sager never disappoints.

Loved every second of it. Had many twists I didn’t see come. Great book

Couldn’t stop reading it!. Excellent storytelling!

The House Across The Lake. The beginning was interesting. It took a turn for the worse when things started being ridiculous. Characers were developed and likable. Storyline sunk for me when ghosts were introduced as reality.

Read it now!. I hate it that several gave this such a low rating. Anyone with an open mind and a thirst for something different, intriguing, shocking, and compelling, not to mention impeccable writing (and, sigh, the perfect attention to detail and tidying up loose ends!), will adore this book. I cannot wait to read more from Mr. Sager!

Great. Best book I’ve read in a long time. Final Girls has been my favorite book of Riley’s, but this is as great or better. Worth the read!

Loved. Loved this book! This is the first one I’ve read by Riley, and I get the hype now. While the twist is a bit out there, I definitely didn’t expect it. I’m anxious to read more by him, and I loved the ending and the way the characters were written. Would highly recommend to mystery fans!

Ehhh. I am so confused about what I just read……..

Disappointing. A ghost..? Really?? Book started promising but the ending was just so amateur. One might say that it was surprising, sure, ghosts and possessed bodies are very surprising in a thriller. What a let down…

Great Writer. 10/10. Amazing book. So many amazing surprises that had me stay up to finish the book.

Chills and Thrills!. Absolutely could NOT put this book down! I’m addicted!

Amazing!. I’m a huge fan of Riley Sager books. I always love the steady pace of the stories & the fun twists of it all! This book is such a good read! Definitely recommended it to friends!!

Didn’t see that coming. Very good read! I thought I had figured out the whole plot and then a twist I never saw coming happened.

Did not finish. It was a slow and suspenseful build up, and then right when things started getting good I was slapped with the laughable plot twist. It was so jarring I could not finish the book, completely lost interest. Big let down.

Never ended plot twists. Just when you think you understand what’s going on- turn the page and read another plot twist. First time reading a Riley Sager book & I think I’ll begin binging the rest. So good.

Loved it. I understand that the supernatural twist was not what some were expecting. But with that said I thought it was refreshing! I love mysteries and supernaturals. Many of us grew up with HP and LOTR, so I’m not sure why it was so unwelcome. I think this was an extremely fresh take on an otherwise normal mystery. The characters were fantastic and the detail was on point. Clear and precise without 20 added pages here and there of reiteration which has been common lately. I’ve loved every Riley Sager book and if this is where she’s heading I’m sure I’ll continue to feel the same. Thank you for another great one!

Could not finish. Implausible plot. Silly waste of time.

House across the lake. So many twists and turns! Enjoyed every page.

What tha???. As other reviews said, I also loved the first 70% or so of this book but it took such a ridiculous turn that I kept waiting for it to be a dream or something and get back to the good part, but sadly that never happened.
