The It Girl Book Reviews
The It Girl by Ruth Ware Book Summary
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.
April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.
Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.
Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.
“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) proves once again that she is “as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post) with this propulsive murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Hannah is a feckin’ eejit. Tedious
Classic Ware page-turner. I have read all of Ruth Ware’s novels and really enjoyed It Girl. Keeps you guessing until the end and the tension is high in just the right places to keep you wanting more. SLIGHT SPOILER…I did feel like there could have been room at the very end for a twist since there were pages of reading left after the murder was solved. The very end took a buy too long to land and it landed a little too softly. But loved it all nonetheless and look forward to the next one.
The It Girl. Amazing… I read the entire book in one day. She is an extremely gifted writer. Now….the wait until her next novel….
Thrilling Read. A slow start but stay with it! Shocking ending.
The It Girl. On of those books you don’t want to end
Hard to respect or like main character. As a mom, I found it hard to like the main character since on multiple occasions she put the life of her unborn baby in jeopardy and also didn’t want to attend doctor appointments for her baby or take medication the doctor said she needed. I liked the book up until she started running around like a crazy person trying to solve the murder with total disregard for her pregnancy. I just couldn’t get past that.
Great read. It had the right amount of suspense and story line to keep me reading. I would recommend this book.
Terrible and Painful to Read. This book moves painfully slow. Grass grows at a quicker rate than the development of this book. I was forced to put put it down about half way through.
Slow to start. I’ve read a lot of Ruth Wares books so I was excited to read It Girl. It was a bit disappointing. Really really slow start. When I was pretty much ready to throw in the towel it got much better. The ending is a twist and made up for such a slow, redundant start.
Best “who done it ever”. The pages just kept turning. I learned to do a lot of things and read at the same time because I couldn’t put it down. And this isn’t even my genre. Good job Ruth. Highly recommend this one. What a twist at the end
Ok. I am a big fan of Ruth Ware novels but this one dragged on for 3/4 and then lit up like a Roman candle. The thrill was in the ending but before that it was a drag.
A must read….. Excellent! Had me guessing wrong until the very end! Bravo!
A Page-turner. Terrific story. Ruth Ware keeps writing books that just entertain.
Couldn’t put it down. Great read! Really enjoyed this one.
Not great!. First I am a HUGE Ruth Ware fan. Sadly I had to FORCE myself to page 183 and then decided….life is to short to read a bad book and skipped to the end. It wasn’t even a surprise!! Bummer! If you’re looking for typical Ruth Ware…unfortunately this ain’t it!! 😢
Loved it!. I have been having a hard time finding a book to read ever since reading CoHo’s “Verity”. I love a good page turner. Ruth’s “The It Girl” was exactly that—a page turner. This book is a murder-mystery with moments of romance. I read the last 2/3rds of the book in one day. Needless to say - I highly, highly recommend. I’m off to the bookstore to purchase another one of Ruth’s novels. New favorite author!!
Very good book. Did not see the ending coming. Read the whole book in only a day.
It just wasn’t good. I skimmed most of the repetitive descriptions and internal dialogue, and I rarely skim, but is was just too awful. The editors should have reduced this book by half. The characters were all pretty much unlikeable children and I found o couldn’t care about them. I recommend a pass on this one.
Kept me guessing. In a good way, however I wish that the before chapter was a bit longer like maybe have followed with what happens after aprils death etc. but the ending was a surprise so that is always good !!
Pulls you in. Invigorating read - finished in just over 24 hours. Wish I could read it again for the first time.
Ehhh. Not my favorite. Took me a while to get through it. Seemed to drag on.
Not my Favorite. Couldn’t help but compare to Ruth’s other books that I recently read and gave 5 stars to - “The Turn of the Key” and “The Death of Mrs. Westaway”. Where these 2 books were rapid reads and I loved the way the characters interacted and was intrigued by the plot. This one - I guess I didn’t much care for April. She seemed entitled, mean and shallow. There was a lot of Before and After chapters and I just didn’t find it as interesting as it plodded along. I figure out the killer early on as well so it wasn’t as surprising for me. Still a great author and I look forward to reading more of her writing.
Loved it!. Every time I thought I figured out The Who … I was wrong again. Excellent .
No twists here. Unfortunately boring, wordy, and predictable to the end .
See something, say something, do something. I wasn’t sure I was going to finish but I have read every book by this author and like her storytelling. However Hannah (our main character) was so messed up from the trauma created when her roommate died I didn’t understand why she could move on. Ten years seemed like enough time to heal. Ms Ware did an outstanding job laying out Hannah’s insecurities and weaknesses . As the story unfolds you do begin to understand and definitely hope Hannah gets closure. Amazing ending.
The It Girl. Ok, typical of Ruth Ware writing.
Predictable. Predictable and really drawn out. Hannah was also a pain of a narrator and I didn't get enough build up of her and Will's relationship at all to make it plausible. Combine that with the fact that she was so fixated on one year in college being so wonderful...it was dull.
Kept Me Guessing. You read widely enough, there are not many books where you can’t figure things out at some point. This was one where I kept changing my mind about “who done it” and was pleasantly surprised (and irked with myself) to discover I was wrong. In fairness, the clues were pretty subtle, as they should be in a mystery novel—good authors are good at the slight-of-hand. You can decide if they were too subtle. I’m on the fence. But it was entertaining.
Good enough. I thought the second half was better than the first half. Interesting who-done-it at the end. I never quite bought that the two were such good friends.
Meh. While I applaud the author for writing a book, this was just okay. The first 2/3rds was a bit boring and often times cliché, but the last 1/3rd was really good. I listened to this and the reader did a good job with voice narration.
