The 6:20 Man by David Baldacci Book Summary

A cryptic murder pulls a former soldier turned financial analyst deep into the corruption and menace that prowl beneath the opulent world of finance, in this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from David Baldacci.

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Sara Ewes, Devine’s coworker and former girlfriend, has been found hanging in a storage room of his office building—presumably a suicide, at least for now—prompting the NYPD to come calling on him. If that wasn’t enough, before the day is out, Devine receives another ominous visit, a confrontation that threatens to dredge up grim secrets from his past in the army unless he participates in a clandestine investigation into his firm. This treacherous role will take him from the impossibly glittering lives he once saw only through a train window, to the darkest corners of the country’s economic halls of power . . . where something rotten lurks. And apart from this high-stakes conspiracy, there’s a killer out there with their own agenda, and Devine is the bull’s-eye.

Somewhat interesting. No fast paced

Pretty good. Slow start, but good once it got going. I’ve been a long time Baldacci fan. It saddens me that he is so bent on disparaging, villainizing, stereotyping, and over dramatizing conservative people and their views. There are plenty of conservative people who don’t shove their views down the throats of people the way Baldacci is so intent on bashing everyone over the head with his opinions. And, there are plenty of conservative people who love all people. Also, a successful author of this caliber pontificating about the greed of wealthy people seems disingenuous. I always buy every Baldacci book as soon as it comes out. I would love to read one that doesn’t bash conservative people, and falsely assign radical ideologies to anyone less liberal than he is. It’s really not necessary to the story lines.

Couldn’t put the book down. Baldacci has an amazing gift to keep you on the edge the entire time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book

Eh. Dissappointed at the weak ending. I wanted to like it but the book was too slow-moving for me without building up much suspense. As I was reading it I felt like it was geared more towards males. Nothing wrong with that, it just had some cliches!

6:20 Man - Great book !!. Packed with goodies. This was a wonderful and twisty ride ! Another super book from one of my favorite writers.

Disappointing. This book was so confusing and jumbled. Did not keep my attention.

Read it ASAP. So good I couldn’t put it down!

3.5 stars. Interesting story. A little boring at times, but I would read a follow up with the same characters.

Hi. Good read kept my interest page to page.

Really bad. So sorry to say this was a terrible book. I have read everything he has written and I only finished it by thinking that it would surely get better. It didn’t. I found the main character to be contrived and there was nothing to make me care about him.

Quick read. Excellent fast read.

6:20 Man takes you for a thrilling ride. One of Baldacci’s best. Great read.

Could have been better. I was expecting more from the plot lines but the ending was a disappointment …too neat and tidy.

This will keep you focused cover-to-cover. The story draws you in, and it keeps you anticipating and predicting the outcome. My first read of this author, and I will definitely try another to encourage my background knowledge of crime and intrigue!

Twists galore. Really a fun read. Hard to put down.

An unbelievable twist lies at every turn. Very entertaining, overall easy to understand

Good read. Try and figure this one !

I couldn’t put it down. Loved it 🥰. Must read!

Another great read!. Baldacci does it again. He keeps you guessing until the end.

Excellent read. I’ve read a few David Baldacci books in the past, but this is the first in a few years. Great to see that he hasn’t lost his touch. The 6:20 Man is so full of twists and turns it keeps you in the edge of your seat. Really enjoyed it.

Baldacci grows on you…. I was captured by this story. The characters, the guessing, the finality. It all fit so well together. Please let there be a sequel.

Great read.. Enjoyed the story from start to finish

Great. Book

Awful. Trite formula writing.

Boring. Took a long time to read. No surprises in the end. I dislike when when people in positions of trust like FBI/police trust someone they do not know and bring them in on their assignments, something that would never happen in real life just to have a relationship be part of the story. Not all books need a “romance”.

Predictable “bad guy” confession. I enjoyed the first 4/5ths. Then, snooze. Does anyone really confess all their sins right when they think they’re getting away with whatever? Too formulaic.

Always an exciting and absorbing read. You know if it’s Baldacci it’s first rate entertainment.. Full of information about the obscure working of the criminal minds. Action packed but not impossible

Good read!. Great new character

The 6:20 Man. 2/5 stars. Stupid, far fetched book! Hal R

Too many easy ways out. This book is replete with total 180 degree switches that had no prior foundation. That made the book seem unconnected and unconvincing. It seemed that the author was simply taking a lazy approach to get to where he wanted the story to go.

Left me kind of lacking. I’ve read most all of his books. Wasn’t as into this one as most of his other books. If this character pops back up, I’ll have to think about it before I purchase it. Typically I pre-order all his books.

Amazing. A great mystery book which keeps you guessing until the very end. Well worth reading!

Not Very Good. I was really looking forward to reading this book. I really wasn’t very good. Maybe you will like it.

The best so far. The only one I did not have figured out ahead of time. Couldn’t put it down

Disappointing. full of cliches and stereotypes

Good character! Dumb ending! Just Mediocre!. Devine is a good enough character to try the second book of the series. But, Balducci must come up with a better plot. Bring back Montgomery & Speers, too!

6:20 Man. One of Baldacci‘s best

More to come…. 4 Stars. Baldacchi with another good series starter. Devine definitely has more stories in him. I wonder if we’ll see any more of Montgomery. I kind of think we might. The General, too, will be interesting. Plenty of room for his story to expand as there is with Speers. The main mystery remains unfinished. I really hope it doesn’t stay that way. Baldacci usually doesn’t leave us completely hanging so.... On to the next one, very soon.

6:20 Man. Great story!!

Not my fav…. Took me forever to get through this book bc of how it was written. I usually will not put a book down if it’s a good one and can finish them in a couple days… this one took me months. Did not keep me interested at all. Character development and relationships between the characters was terrible. Story was very choppy and didn’t flow well. The ending kept me a little more interested than the middle. First book I ever read of Baldacci’s and I probably will not read another one. Not my cup of tea, but I wanted to give it a chance. Some people may like this style of writing. Unfortunately, I did not. That may be bc I like historical fiction the most though. Seems to be geared more towards men… which is understandable.

Good read. I enjoyed the story and was totally surprised at the ending. I did not see that one coming but enjoyed it nonetheless.

Jack Reacher Clone. An interesting new character in ex-Army Ranger Travis Devine, who I suspect we’ll see again in future Baldacci stories. The premise for the story was somewhat sound but the plot twists and ending were pretty ridiculous with a lot of loose ends. As is often the case with popular mass market authors, the more novels they produce the poorer the quality. The reader is left with the distinct impression the author was under a hard deadline to finish the book and had to “wrap it up” one way or another without respect to the story line really making much sense and without any believability. At least Devine is a new macho character we can cheer for and hope to see again.

Couldn’t put it down. This story absolutely sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down. Excellent story. If you’re reading this, buy it already. You can thank me later.

Outstanding!. Well written. Absolutely kept my attention! Didn’t want to put it down! Just had to find out what happened next.

Great mystery/murder.. Great mystery/murder. Enjoyed it very much, especially since I tend to not read them. Great suspense, kept me guessing until the end.

David Baldacci does it again.. Starts a little slow but picks up speed faster than a Hummingbird’s wings.

Boring. If this was tv I would have changed the channel. Boring!

The 6:20 MN. Good at first but then became too formulaic. Weak ending

Going analog gets a new name. I really enjoyed this fast paced, keep your guessing book. Baldacci is a great writer that keeps you guessing with his plot twists. It was a good read.

Birdie book. Second half of the book was a page turner, but several of the plot lines seem to stem from controversial political and social issues. Overall though, a good book. Will be reading next book in the series.

Weird ending. I like the short paragraphs. The Area 51 stuff not resolved so clearly a sequel coming.

Excellent read. Couldn’t put book down. This was an eye opener with reference to money laundering . I could not put the book down. Very well written and kept me in suspense all the way to the end. I hope there is a follow up to this book. This new character Travis sounds like he can finally get his redemption in the next book . I very much enjoyed reading this book. I did not want it to end. Thanks again David Baldacci for another exciting book. I have read every one of your books.
