Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry Book Summary

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

The BELOVED STAR OF FRIENDS takes us behind the scenes of the hit sitcom and his struggles with addiction in this “CANDID, DARKLY FUNNY...POIGNANT” memoir (The New York Times)

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK by Time, Associated Press, Goodreads, USA Today, and more!

“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”

So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who traveled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us. . . and so much more.

In an extraordinary story that only he could tell—and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it—Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he’s found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humor, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is an unforgettable memoir that is both intimate and eye-opening—as well as a hand extended to anyone struggling with sobriety. Unflinchingly honest, moving, and uproariously funny, this is the book fans have been waiting for.

Greatest books by Matthew perry. The greatest book by Matthew perry I love this book everything In the book is true

Huh. I have conflicting feelings about this book. While it’s interesting and a poignant look at addiction and recovery that made me well up at the end, it’s also somewhat unsurprising given how famous Matthew Perry is and how familiar we are with his addiction. This could be my own familiarity with his story and the fact that I read this book a little later than most. Even so, it’s a great look at addiction and if you’re a fan of celebrity memoirs, I think there’s something to be said for it.

You have earned peace. Saddest book I have ever read…RIP Matthew Perry. You are loved by many! You have helped us through laughter and helped many others get through the darkness to be able to laugh.

Heartbreaking. Broke my heart.

Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing. Excellent! A brave, honest man wrote this book. A book to be read by addicts, families of addicts or anyone who has struggled. Matthew Perry you will be missed.

A winner rests with God now.. Admitting one’s flaws is left for a few, admitting it and sharing it with the world does help others who may be in confusion as to what to do about one’s addiction, be it to drugs, alcohol or smoking is something to applaud. Read and be a witness as to how hard painful this problem becomes, appreciate the power of our loved ones, friends and relatives alike. God bless you, Matthew Perry.

Post Mortem. I will be starting this book after Matthew’s “Matty’s” death. Although, I am all too familiar with addictions and the substances behind these stories, nevertheless, Matty’s story should and has been told. I look forward to updating this prelude afterward. Saturday 10.28.2023 was a day of surprise and not a surprise. The body and mind takes years to recover. It is difficult to mentally adjust to a foreign way of living. It’s culture shock. It makes one lonely & homesick for the comfortable pleasures to take us away from all the pain of the unknown future. My heart aches when it seems someone lost the battle. At this time though, causes have not yet been determined. Our souls, our essence may go on but the body stays behind to give its last words of advice. Matty was a compassionate and caring person. He didn’t want others to suffer as he did. We each have our own journeys, this was his. I think I will be crying a lot through this book. Thank you Matthew Matty Perry, your life had and always will have meaning. I’m truly sorry it couldn’t have been longer. But that is selfish of me. Rest. Rejuvenate. Peace.

Amazing… more than that. So full of meaningful messages and life lessons. Amazing life he lived in every way and overcame with such resilience, gracefully and gratefully. Beyond words to express how much every single human MUST read this book to understand at least one person we know and because we all need it to be better humans. Thank you for writing it and leaving it to us to be.

Not sure why it has so many 5 star reviews. He basically tells a story about how narcissistic he is, how his a womanizer, how he holds no accountability for his actions. Then there is the repeated drug and alcohol abuse, then going to rehab to get clean just to repeat the cycle over and over again all throughout his life. All the while blaming everyone for his problems, even God. I feel like this book was written because he wanted sympathy, but for what? Because he had two loving parents, a great career, the most beautiful, successful, intelligent woman who loved him, money, fame and a God who saved many times from death? Sorry to say but this book was a big let down. It was also hard to read because it was all over the place.

Acting with him was fun. It was fun acting with my friend god bless him and his family❤️🪦R.I.P to a good friend

RIP. My old friend.

Matty. This book was written with such honesty and vulnerability! It gave so much insight to the life of Mathew and the challenges he faced. It’s heartbreaking that his has now passed but moving that he left behind proof that one can see the light at the end of the tunnel from addiction. He had such a kind heart and I hope he’s watching from above to see that the world saw what a good human being that he was.

Honest and heartbreaking. I listened to Matthew read this book and it was captivating. I never knew what a hard life he lead with addiction. I don’t know how he managed to be so successful but he truly was a talented actor. He laid all his dirty laundry out and that had to be difficult. What a great testimony he left and tribute to all the people he loved. He mentions so many at the end and how thankful and how he loved them all. A special keepsake book. RIP Matthew

Mathew Perry. I read this book as fast as I could to truly understand addictions! God Bless him for writing his amazing and truthful story! I’m so glad he got to have peace in his life before he died! I’m praying my son will read his book and it will help him with his addictions, as I’m sure it will help so many people out there, that need to hear his story! What a beautiful brilliant human being he was! I’m sure he is in the beautiful glow of God’s bright light, in a mansion with a view , with streets of gold!

The big terrible thing…Addiction. Matthew Perry put into words what being an addict really feels like. The disease that takes everything away from you… spiritually physically emotionally… He illustrated the worse part of addiction for me… the obsession! OhMyGod Matthew suffered and fought the many faucets of addiction relentlessly! He gave us a book that describes the battle with the depths of true evil. I recommend reading this book to anyone who has ever experienced the various forms of addiction…And to all of us who loved Chandler Bing.

Mattman. Raw and beautiful and also tragically funny. I am grateful to have read Matthew’s story and even though we haven’t walked the same path in life, I felt a sincere connection to many of his thoughts and feelings. I have no doubt that it will have a profound effect on my life and I’ll never forget the story or the man that told it. You’ve done it Matty. You’ve helped many and will continue to do so. Save me a seat in Heaven.

Incredible.. Sadness. Happiness. And everything in between. His story is sad yet inspiring. Recommending this book to everyone.

Sad to read but I’m so glad I did. Touching, sad, impactful. I’m glad I read this & I recommend everyone read this book. RIP Matthew Perry

Very good read. Very heartfelt description of a dark, difficult time. Highly recommend! Sorry Matty didn’t get to realize his dreams.

Amazing. Mind blowing, eye opening, tear jerking.

Understanding. As I finish reading this book, I’m finally able to understand my own brother a little better…thank you Matthew Perry. My brother was also an alcoholic and a drug addict, but to me, was and will always be my big brother whom I will love and think about every day.

Love that book. Liked everything about the book, never realized what Perry went through, also definitely felt like he was telling the story first hand as if chandler was telling the story. Good read!

Wow…Surprising. I didn’t quite know what to expect from him. I knew there would be jokes, but this was so much more. He bares his soul in this exciting and heartfelt romp. His crazy journey of living life on a rollercoaster with no brakes is thrilling and heartbreaking at the same time. He writes as well as he acts, full of surprises all the way. Don’t miss this epic tale of life on the edge as a superstar where anything can happen and does!

Love it. Top notch ! RIP Matthew Perry.

Review. Heartbreaking….if only he had known how loved he was & now he’s gone. RIP, Matthew💔

Couldn’t put it down!. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a great read, I’ve always admired Matthew’s work, he is so going to be missed 😞

Great book. Very sad story but it seemed like he kept writing the same thing the whole book

“The great read”. Grateful to hear this story of war and peace. Everybody has been touched by the family disease just wake up.

Make it half as long…. I love to get in insight in what Matt went through and what his life has looked like. After the thirteenth time he talks about relapsing- this book could have been half as long and made magical. Instead I find myself just scimming through the last 25% of the book

A must read!!. So thankful that Matthew Perry opened up about his life in a way that would have been so easy to hide, but did it to help others is the best take away from the entire read.

He went through a lot. Amazed he is still with us!

Matty’s life. Poignant revelations of his struggles. Now after his death , so sad and painful.

Sensational. A wonderfully raw side of Matthew Perry, where he takes you into the depths of his addiction. But miraculously defies all odds an finds his golden light of life, a self discovery of being enough.

Hermoso. Me encantó, lo sentí tan sincero, las historias tan bien contadas que siento que lo viví mientras lo leía. Gracias por abrirnos tu vida y tu corazón MP 🤍.

RIP Matthew Perry, you will be loved forever. I enjoyed spending the weekend with you, “Matty”. I had no idea you spent most of your life, battling depression and fear, and eventually the rest of your life battling addiction.. beautiful memoir and a beautiful soul. Rest in peace.

Miss you Matty. We lost a “Friend.” Wish I had read this while he was still alive. But since his Death was so recent I felt obligated to read it. I cannot imagine his struggles and addiction. But thank you for writing it. And Thank You for ten amazing years of laugh, fun, and love.

Rest in Peace.. So much talk in this book about death & surviving, reading this after he’s passed is heartbreaking. Great book by a great man. ❤️

Honest, awful, and heartbreaking…. Matthew doesn't pull any punches or try to pretty up his lifelong fight with addiction and all its horrendous ravages on his body, career, relationships and life. He fought until the end. I wish he were here fighting still.

My favorite character ❤️. Lord!!! I read this in 3 days I was so hooked! Now I need to watch all the Matthew Perry movies and shows I’ve missed out on! Such a good read 🫶🏼

Heartbreaking. It’s hard to say a book like this is good, but it is. It’s heartbreaking to read everything he went through his whole life and that he was finally doing better then passed away. This book sheds light on the mind of an addict. It might not be for everyone to read but I couldn’t stop. RIP MP.

Amazing. Amazing!!! Finished in 24 hrs! RIP mr. Perry

Unbelievably Real. This was an eye opener for me. Thank you Matthew Perry for being honest, and real about your life of addiction and alcoholism. I’d recommend this book to anyone and everyone who needs a push to what’s real and the heartache and loneliness addiction causes.

Beautiful. Excellent, heartbreaking and incredibly well written.

What a life, what a struggle. So honest!

10/10, I would definitely recommend!. Such an amazing memoir. Perry talks about such hard topics like addiction and death while still cracking jokes throughout the book. While not making the whole book about friends. It’s an amazing book about overcoming many years of addiction, and becoming grateful to be alive. I hope Perry is able to find a significant other, and have children some day. He seems like he would be a great father.

Charles. When the time comes.. no one is ready.

Loved it!. Great read!! I could literally hear his voice while reading.

I even liked him in West Wing. Very honest and tough to read. Amazing what he has been through and how he is getting up every day to continue to fight this fight. God Bless Him.

So tough to read. This was a tough read. Good writer, hard story, but so compelling. Really revealing of what addiction can do to one’s life and those around them. The story is incredibly personal and Perry was so vulnerable. Laid it all on the table.

Sadly riveting. I read the book after Matthew Perry’s death. So naturally all I thought about throughout the book was he’s gone now and that made me very very sad, especially at the end, when he seemed to be enjoying life, but was that truly the way he felt. I would like to think that it was and that his remaining days from finishing the book until his death were fulfilling and peaceful. Rest easy Matthew.. you are pain and addiction free and you deserve every moment of blissful paradise in God’s loving arms.

Wowza.. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I bought this book, truthfully I found it eye opening to learn about the personal and life experiences behind the scenes in the life of Matthew Perry. I thought it was a great read.

Written By an Actor. I was very excited to read this book but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. It is evident that the writer is not an author by trade. The book doesn’t adhere to a specific timeline but rather jumps around to different moments in time in a very confusing manner. I found the storyline a little bit difficult to follow for this reason.

Could not put this book down!. Sad, funny and lovable! RIP Matthew ❤️

So moving!. Heart wrenching, so very honest and brilliant… I am in awe of Matthews resilience and goodness. Rest in Peace Matthew - you are one of the shiniest of all stars!!

I saw your real cast. Being honest and showing the world we are not perfect is the right way. Enjoy your every moment no matter how messed up it was to get you to today. I just bought it cause I think you just might be a real life character that is and true. Thanks for being you Mathew.

Every page was captivating. Extraordinarily written! Every line and every page made you feel as if you were walking beside him and cheering him on. Each time he relapsed, my heart sank. One of the best memoirs I’ve read. Matthew Perry is an incredible writer. I realized he and Chandler Bing were one in the same, which was so endearing as a reader. A lost soul who finally found a hard won peace.

Wow! He got throught it all. Matthew Perry’s cautionary tale of having it all and almost losing it all, incuding his life, is both heartbreaking and captivating. This actor made us laugh through the pain and addiction. Imagine what he can do next, freed from his demons. A must-read from a must-see actor.

Amazing and uplifting. A life lost too soon! RIP, Matthew. There is hope for others….just keep at it.

Opens your heart…. Could not put it down…

Two laughs for every cry. The most amusing, laugh-out-loud funny account of one man’s sad and despairing journey to addiction… and redemption. Great read.

The voice we know. I loved it but suggest listening to it at 1.25 speed to get the feel of the Matthew we remember and love.

Thank you for sharing. Great read and look into the terrible world of addiction that can take down anyone. Thank you for sharing your story with the world, appreciated and helpful.

amazing book. you will be missed. what an incredible adventure.

Devastating, and beautifully written. Couldn’t put this one down.

Excellent. The skeptic in me always questions a celebrities angle when writing a book. But to be honest as a recovering alcoholic this book hit home and touched on so many of my own thoughts and fears. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and it was very easy to read.

The least self-aware book I’ve read in a long while. Most autobiographies are self-serving, due to arrogance. This book is self-serving because it’s just a chance to lay Matthew’s pain at our feet. This is someone who repeats his mistakes in life and in words. A waste of a read.

Inspirational, raw and truthful, everything the world needs more of.. Reccomended to everyone
