Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry Book Summary

The BELOVED STAR OF FRIENDS takes us behind the scenes of the hit sitcom and his struggles with addiction in this “CANDID, DARKLY FUNNY...POIGNANT” memoir (The New York Times)

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK by Time, Associated Press, Goodreads, USA Today, and more!

“Hi, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name. My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.”

So begins the riveting story of acclaimed actor Matthew Perry, taking us along on his journey from childhood ambition to fame to addiction and recovery in the aftermath of a life-threatening health scare. Before the frequent hospital visits and stints in rehab, there was five-year-old Matthew, who traveled from Montreal to Los Angeles, shuffling between his separated parents; fourteen-year-old Matthew, who was a nationally ranked tennis star in Canada; twenty-four-year-old Matthew, who nabbed a coveted role as a lead cast member on the talked-about pilot then called Friends Like Us. . . and so much more.

In an extraordinary story that only he could tell—and in the heartfelt, hilarious, and warmly familiar way only he could tell it—Matthew Perry lays bare the fractured family that raised him (and also left him to his own devices), the desire for recognition that drove him to fame, and the void inside him that could not be filled even by his greatest dreams coming true. But he also details the peace he’s found in sobriety and how he feels about the ubiquity of Friends, sharing stories about his castmates and other stars he met along the way. Frank, self-aware, and with his trademark humor, Perry vividly depicts his lifelong battle with addiction and what fueled it despite seemingly having it all.

Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing is an unforgettable memoir that is both intimate and eye-opening—as well as a hand extended to anyone struggling with sobriety. Unflinchingly honest, moving, and uproariously funny, this is the book fans have been waiting for.

RoughHonestly disappointed in this book and Matthew Perry. I’ve always really liked Matthew Perry and was interested in reading his side of his story and addiction. First, I thought it was poorly written and all over the place. Confusing to follow any of the stories he was telling and no straight thought. Matthew Perry also exaggerated stories for dramatics and reactions from the audience, which I suppose as an actor has always been his point, but is annoying as a reader of a memoir. Specifically his medical stories are exaggerated for “wow factor”. Additionally Matthew Perry shows how absurdly self important he finds himself. Honest and Raw, a Must Read for Anyone who is HumanMatthew Perry bears his soul and has somehow reached his way into mine. Many times I cried and, of course, laughed until I cried. This book brought me closer to understanding addiction and gave me the chance to learn how to increase my empathy for those who suffer from this dreadful and devious disease. I admire Perry for bringing his raw and often visceral truth to the page for us all to see and feel. It was an act of generosity to share so deeply and I believe this book will change lives, as he clearly states, was one of his intentions. I recently lost a loved one, in her twenties, to an accidental drug overdose which was devastating for all my family and me. I felt very close to this topic and now have more compassion and understanding for the pain addicts must be going through. It may sound odd to say but I’d consider this book to somehow be a part of my healing process. I first picked up this book because of curiosity and intrigue about the infamous Matthew Perry, aka Chandler, known to have fallen many times from addiction. What I learned was this was not only about watching someone devastate and destroy himself, this book is really about redemption. It’s about the bravery and strength it took to save himself. If you expect to read this to peek into what tabloids displayed all these years about Chandler Bing, you will get that but you may also have a paradigm shift. Matthew Perry shows us that human beings are capable of so much more than they or we may think. I have a lot of similarities to the childhood pain that Perry describes. This book made me take stock of them and wonder how I might better process them after all these years. Even though I am a bit older and from a different geographic, I was very connected to the rich descriptions of his experiences. I even remember the Irish Spring commercial from my own childhood, it was on tv so often. His journey is so richly described that you feel like you are experiencing his feelings and there are many touchpoints in which the reader can relate. I think humor is still one of the most important and vital characteristics of life. Perry is just so funny and engaging and that aspect is pervasive throughout and underscores the entire book, which is what adds a sheer delight, even through the roughest and darkest of moments. In finishing the book and looking at the many photos at the end, I can’t help but feel familial and loving toward him myself, although he is a stranger. Perry states he is looking for love and I think any woman who ends up with him will have to be very strong because it will be hard work. But he will be worth every bit of it. The love and care he needs will always have to start from within himself and I think he is finally learning that. If I could say one thing to Matty Perry, I’d want to tell him you are enough. To survive and come out of so many detoxes and rehabs to succeed in that massive show and live over these last many years to write this book is certainly an accomplishment. Having money doesn’t assure recovery, but he did use it to help save his life, time and again.
