Enjoyable read but nothing new. I enjoyed the beginning of the book a lot. Depends on the reader I suppose. What’s good about this book: the main character is written in a likable and human way (but still somehow seems to be a collage of too many positive character traits that makes it a little unbelievable). What I mean by this is he is a 17 year old boy who is both a top-tier athlete as well as a book nerd (among other things). The fantasy aspect is interesting. Reminds me somewhat of the lore behind Dark Souls video games. However, getting lost in this lore is a little difficult as King tries to interweave modern appliances into a medieval setting. Meshing the two worlds seems to make the suspended disbelief a bit harder. It also ruins the enchantment with a sense of kitschiness. Along this thread, King also makes his prose a bit garish and slipshod. He attempts to get “meta” about his story in a way that just seems like lazy writing (like the stories about people writing stories). The narrator, toward the middle and end of the book, CONSTANTLY talks about fairy tales and how what’s happening to him is “unbelievable like those fairy tales”, but then says over and over, “but this isn’t a fairy tale, it’s real life,” as if it somehow makes the story seem more gripping. Honestly, it seems a little like a story that King took shortcuts on. Will you like it? Depends if you’re a picky fiction reader like I am. Again, not unbearable and it was a well paced book, but it definitely wasn’t anywhere close to a favorite of mine.

There are other worlds than these. Good book. Loved it.

Awesome. Long, but worth it

What I Wished The Talisman Was. I love Stephen King’s fantasy work - I’m a huge fan of The Dark Tower - but I was always left a little disappointed by The Talisman. I felt like this story really scratched that itch for me all these years later. A kid on an epic quest who finds out he has mythical status in another world. I loved the characters and was hooked to learn what would happen to their world. A great read!

Starts out a little slow. Anyone with an imagination will absolutely love this book, although it does start off a little slower than expected. It’s a beautiful story all in all, and the word play is phenomenal!

Absolutely Brilliant. This story is one that I have thought about for many weeks after finishing. King weaves an epic adventure of true friendship and the power of our connections in Fairytale. Could not put this down and did not want it to end. I will love Radar til the end of time.🐕

Couldn’t wait to know what happened next. I love to believe in the idea that there is another world, and we just don’t know about it. I found this book fabulous. I love the fairytale part of it, modern day part of it and how it was all intertwined together. Definitely a different type of book for Stephen King. I highly recommend it.

King’s Fantasy Side at its Best!. Get ready to take an adventure into a fantasy world that perfectly conjoins our own familiarities and fantastical impossibilities. King is incomparable at creating worlds that are enough like our own to be relatable, and so magical and fantastic to be whimsical. The characters and their relationships are impeccable, leaving you wanting the absolute best for the good and beyond the worst for the bad. I always enjoy a SK read, but this one is special. It’s brutal and beautiful. It’s depressing and convivial. It ultimately leads to the question: could you give up absolute magic and beauty in order to save it? Incredible read, highly recommended.

don’t waste your time. just crap

Must love dogs. Should emphasize that the dog is the main character and drives the whole story. As I am not a dog lover, Radar, and her plot didn’t resonate with me at all. I loved the fantastical elements of the story, but again since the core is of and about a dog I wish I didn’t buy it.

Couldn’t stop reading. Just an imaginative treasure.

Wonderful Read!. I believe this has to be one of King’s best! I enjoyed the combination of Fantasy, Mystery, Horror and so much more. The interaction between young and old was so believable and enjoyable! And when you throw a dog into the mix, how can you lose!

Fairy Tale is an excellent book!. Fantastic story! vivid language throughout the story. I saw the sky in Empris , felt the wind blow as the monarch’s fluttered in the sky and wished I could’ve sat by the fireplace at Dora’s cottage. Thanks Mr. King for another classic novel.

Misleading title…kinda. Such a better book than I anticipated. The title is misleading…and yet not. I can find a way to like all his books, but this one was easy to fall into and enjoy, only to be sad when it ends just because it ends.

A tale to remember. Another great Stephen King story! I lost a lot of sleep as I simply could not stop reading! I love the references to the old Fairy Tales and other tales that we are all so familiar with! A story of great adventure, fantasy and a little magic thrown in; not to mention the evil in the story that sends chills down your spine! A really great read and different than the usual Stephen King thriller!

I missed this King. One of King’s better works of late. There are some classic King tropes that will bring a smile to fans of the King of the 90’s. His recent foray into the overly political seems to have subsided a bit. Overall, true fans of King will appreciate the book as a testament to why they read King.

Such an epic adventure!!. One of King's best! This fairy tale pulled me in immediately and it just got better and better. I didn't want this book to end!! I would love to read more about Charlie and his Empis brood of compatriots. This would be an epic series!! Here is to hoping!

Great fantasy!. One of the best fantasy books I’ve all year! Well written and draws you in!

AMAZING!. I absolutely adore every single one of Stephen King’s works, this one really hit home. This book will always have a special hold on my heart. This is the kind of story that both warms the heart but also challenges everything we see and believe. And with that said, ‘long live Empis!’

Love it all the way till the end. Whimsical, fun, attention grabber from the beginning. I didn’t want the land of Empis to end. Very different from previous SK books I’ve read but this novel comes with no disappointments. King delivers a wonderful story in a mesmerizing manner as always.

Disappointed. I’ve read over 30 King books (some two times) and this by far was my least favorite. All throughout, I thought someone else must have written it because it was lacking what I typically enjoy in his novels.

Only S King Book I Stopped Reading. Always love S King’s book from his 1st published book. I could not get into this story at all, just bored with it. Moved on to Holly and loved it.

Fairytale. This book is gripping and unpredictable, yet wholesome. It’s started off reminding me of to kill a mockingbird and slid into home like American Gods. A rare read for sure. I only hate that it’s over and now I’m craving another.

It was brilliant and didn’t want the story to end.. I love when I immediately connect to characters, and that is what happened here. The world King created, both above and below, was vivid and had me hooked after the first chapter. I don’t know if we will get a sequel or a spin-off, but if it happens I will be first in line to buy it.

GREAT read. It starts off slow, but each chapter gives you just enough anticipation to keep searching for more. I couldn’t put it down. Now that I’m done, I find myself wishing there were more of the story.

Ugh…. I like many of King’s books, but this is certainly not one of them. It is long, unnecessarily drawn out, and a huge bore. What happened to King as a master of suspenseful horror writing? Unfortunately, he is nowhere to be seen in this dull tome.

LOVED FAIRYTALE!. Stephen King’s imagination just amazes me every time I read one of his stories. I’m there in the story, I can see what the characters see and feel what they feel. His writing is simply incredible!

Long and boring. One of King’s weakest. I have read all of hiw books and this one bored and dissappointed me. King builds a nice story and then does not k ow how to finish it. Almost seems like he himself got bored with this book

The perfect fairy tale. This was just an overall good book and it all starts with a dog named Radar.

A good read. A good read. Nothing even close to vintage King, and certainly not horror. But still a good read.

I miss the original Stephen King. I don’t usually criticize authors but these recent books of Stephen King lacks the originality of Stephen King. I wasted time reading these.

Interesting at first. Like most King’s novels it’s managed by many plots and subplots along with regular references to other stories he’s done. I’m not a huge fan but this one held my attention then around half into it I lost interest and had a less than enthusiastic feeling bout pushing myself to finish it . It ended ok if you’re a fan this is a good read ; not for the fair of heart , it is 1000plus pages.

I wish I had more stars to give.. As a Constant Reader, this will enter my top 3. Loved every moment of it.

The Ultimate Fairytale. King tells the story as if it truly happened!

A fun departure from King’s usual horror stories. Fairy Tale is a lot of fun. I enjoy when King delves into fantasy. This book reminds me a lot of the Talisman at times as the main character travels across a fantasy land in an attempt to rescue a loved one. (In this case Radar.) The middle of the book can be a bit slow, but the beginning and the ending are absolutely incredible.

Fairy Tale. Fairy Tale doesn’t really “feel” like Mr. King. He carefully combines fairy tales that readers remember with the life of a high school athlete who made a “spiritual promise” that someday must be fulfilled. He stumbles into a strange world because he loves a dog. Yes, there are monsters and evil to be dealt with along the way. However the story is really about relationships, determination, grit and loyalty.

Tugs at your heart. Really loved this book. I read almost all of King and this was absolutely one of my favorites. Brings joy to the heart.

Excellent Book. Classic King. Great story telling, great characters. Makes you wanting more.

He just knows how to write em. Felt like the book started off great and wrapped up a little too quickly, but was a good read.

Fairy Tale. What a wonderful childhood story filled with adventure, love, fear, hatred, and of course a story book ending. Wonderful, Mr. King. You have outdone yourself. I miss Charlie and Radar already.
