Sparring Partners by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham is the acknowledged master of the legal thriller. In his first collection of novellas, law is a common thread, but America’s favorite storyteller has several surprises in store.

“Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend, Mack Stafford, a former lawyer in Clanton, who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole money from his clients, divorced his wife, filed for bankruptcy, and left his family in the middle of the night, never to be heard from again—until now. Now Mack is back, and he’s leaning on his old pals, Jake and Harry Rex, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned.

In “Strawberry Moon,” we meet Cody Wallace, a young death row inmate only three hours away from execution. His lawyers can’t save him, the courts slam the door, and the governor says no to a last-minute request for clemency. As the clock winds down, Cody has one final request.

The “Sparring Partners” are the Malloy brothers, Kirk and Rusty, two successful young lawyers who inherited a once prosperous firm when its founder, their father, was sent to prison. Kirk and Rusty loathe each other, and speak to each other only when necessary. As the firm disintegrates, the resulting fiasco falls into the lap of Diantha Bradshaw, the only person the partners trust. Can she save the Malloys, or does she take a stand for the first time in her career and try to save herself?

By turns suspenseful, hilarious, powerful, and moving, these are three of the greatest stories John Grisham has ever told.

Disappointed. Each year I eagerly wait for John Grisham’d new book. I was disappointed in these short stories. It felt as though Lu just as they became interesting, it was over.

Total crap. Dumbest thing ever

Threefer. Very well done three short stories. A nice follow up to a character introduced in a previous book. An interesting look at death row. Lastly a story of greed and family disfunction at a high level. I felt as if I knew the characters. I laughed aloud while reading about one of the characters using a snake to murder his wife. That is a true skill to make the reader laugh about a character doing a heinous act.

???. Not sure what this was.

Three Separate Stories. This JG book is not my favorite. While the title is “SparringPartners”, it’s really three novellas that , to me, leave you hanging at the end of each one. I felt as though the stories never concluded, therefore this book was a little disappointing. JH - Utah

Clearly a money grab. Very disappointed in this work product by john Grisham Nor worthy of his skills or up to the standard he has previously set

Sparring Partners. This is a compilation of three small novellas, not a single novel. While all the stories were very interesting, they all seem unfinished. Disappointing for John Grisham.

The worst ending ever!. Had no idea the end of the story was coming! Sucked

Quick Read!. His writing locks me in and I can’t take a break… another great read.

Endings are too short. The first and third stories are terrific, however the endings could have been longer and more detailed. It was like what happens next? The second story was dull and boring.

Grisham has lost it!! Terrible book. This is one of the worst Grisham books I have ever read. This man has lost it. I can’t believe he would put his name on such a pathetic book. What a waste of time and money

What???. So disjointed…I don’t get it.

Sparring Partners - A+. What a fantastic book. An amazing legal thriller with a cool plot and lots of drama. Highly recommended!!!

Sparring Partners. Stories were just OK. The novels are clearly better.

Does not measure up. Disappointing and not of the same quality you would expect from a John Grisham novel.

Not his best. Feels like 3 stories that he had lying around, so he put out a book. More anti-death penalty writing and evil lawyers. I think maybe he should just retire and enjoy his money.

Good read. I enjoyed reading each of the stories and I liked the way he left the endings. I just wish they had been longer because I love Grisham novels and hate to finish them.

Disappointed. I’ve read 34 of his books, and always appreciated how he developed the characters and wrapped up the story. This unfinished ending left me saying, WHAT? Didn’t read the last two stories.

Great Book. 3 great stories and I wanted more of it. The thing I liked the most is the people, although breaking the law, got away.

Want my money back!. I understand an author wants to delve into new territory and not write the same formulaic drivel. BUT- this work is actually three totally unrelated novellas. And, for that matter, none of them came to a conclusion! So, I guess there will be a sequel to bring each to a denouement. Very, very, disappointing work. I pre-ordered this before reviews came out- hey, it’s Grisham, it’s gonna be good, right? Learned my lesson. Won’t pre-order again.

3 short stories. I love the writing but it felt like 3 short stories without endings.

Confusing. I did not like the format of this book! At the end of each story I thought it would be continued somewhere else. It was not your left with more questions than answer, felt very unfinished. definitely not worth the read

Sparring Partners. Wow the ending was horrible

Disappointed RLV54. The writing was good as expected but very disappointed that this work is actually three short stories with no indication on the cover.

Poor at best. Not a Grisham type writing. Three mini plots in one book with no endings to any of them. Grisham is loosing his touch. Never would have spent the money for this had I known it was goi g to be such a hospog.

Did I miss something?. These stories felt incomplete to me.

Sparring Partners. 3 short stories instead of one novel like the title implies. The endings are like tv series cliff hangers. The readers are left with guessing what happens next. I kept hoping the stories would be brought together in some intertwined way in a great ending as his many past books I’ve loved have done.

Big Disappointment. This is not the John Grisham I’m used too.

Good read. Three separate stories. Perfect for reading during a flight or vacation. I originally thought that they would all come together in the third chapter (ie Rouge Lawyer) but was naught. A good read even though.

Sparring partners. Have been a long time Grisham fan but this book was awful and I’m mad I wasted money. Didn’t realize it was 3 short stories that never fully develop. It’s almost like he started 3 stories and couldn’t find a good way to develop them so he just writes an abrupt careless ending to each w characters you can’t find a way to care about. Super super disappointing

VERY DISAPPOINTING. I prefer a clear ending to a story. None of the 3 so called novellas offered this. I truly thought I was reading a good continuing story about Jake Brigance. Not so. Very disappointing. You need to do better Grisham!!

Not what I expected. Not what I expected, a bit confused come to think of it? Three stories with no correlation to each other. Title is not appropriate being there are three different stories. Good writing but disappointed.

Disappointing. Why three short stories? It was confusing. Jake to death row to “sparring partners”? It didn’t make sense. And, the three completely different stories weren’t that interesting. I’ve read every John Grisham book and he’s an excellent writer but this was disappointing.

Sparring Partners. Not up to par with his past books. Disappointing:(

Not worth $5.00. What a huge disappointment. I should have listened to the reviews. Three boring short stories…Grisham must have these plots in mind for three books…in his early..and I say very early attempts at establishing himself as a beloved author.

Great, as usual. Fun summer read. I’d love to see more of Mack & Corey.

Sparring Partners. I am so disappointed in this book. It is so disjointed and the ending is a big fat mess…I truly counldnt imagine this was the ending. A lot of pages….just that….pages.

Pretty good. Grisham is a great, impressive storyteller. Sparring Partners did not seem fully baked, however.

Sparring Partners. I have read many John Grisham ‘s books and liked all of them, except Sparring Partners. The stories didn’t develop well, the plots leave you with the feeling that they did not conclude. Also, the stories do not flow well, l felt like several events were happening, but the connection among them was not clear.

Unconnected novellas and all disappointing. In total, I kept wondering how or if to connect these three stories. Then realizing they don’t connect, I was disappointed in all three individually. Grisham has been a master but this felt like a commercialized money grab as some other famous authors have done. Let’s all hope that he puts more time into his craft and does not become so greedy to begin licensing his name to novels written by others as so many other great writers have done. This attempt is an early warning of Grisham’s future attempt to sacrifice his quality for quantity and money. I was disappointed

She got ‘um. Dinatha got’m in the end !

No me gusto. Primera novela de Grisham que no me gusta. Queda inconclusa.

Where’s the rest of the book?. This was just 3 short stories with no ending and with barely developed characters. Huge disappointment.

Stories end without an end. 3 stories, only 1 of which relates to the title in reality. Each ends without a true climax for the story written. One of the worst Grisham books I’ve ever read.

Money back. I’m be liked Grisham’s books until this one (or was it 2 or 3). Pathetic shorts stories! Very disappointed!

I want my $$ back. So disappointing. What a waste of my time.

Disappointed, 3 short stories. 3 short stories in one book. Expected a book in the series, but stories are unrelated and don’t really give an ending.

Short stories. I was expecting another awesome blood by this author, but instead found this book as a series of short, unrelated stories. Disappointed.

Disappointed. Not what I expected.

Amazing, intriguing!. If you start this book with the knowledge that it is, in fact, 3 separate, non-related novellas, I’m confident you will LOVE IT! It was nice to take a quick break in between stories, but starting a new one - I couldn’t put it down!

Good read. Well written, however, not the best I’ve read from Grisham

Not bad. I prefer a full novel to 3 short stories, but these stories were entertaining.

Sparring Partners. Not one of Grishams best books! Disappointing…
