Relentless adventure. Every page brings a new hazard but the language is clean and the violence is cartoonish. It is a tale with clearly defined good and evil. Martokallu is evil and the Hawks are definitely the good guys even if they do assassinate anyone they disagree with. I bought Rebels of Halklyen for my nephew and he gobbled it up before convincing me to read it. Now, we both need the second book in the series.

Young readers will love this book!. Full disclosure: I know the author. Normally, I would not read a young adult fantasy, but I wanted to support my friend. Nonetheless, I found the story pulled me in and I rode the wave of excitement from the beginning to the end. Flint and Fleta, along with the other Hawks, are believable characters who are passionate about doing their part to save Abbarkon. As a teacher, I can see that this book would be valuable in getting students hooked on reading. It has everything a young reader loves: action, adventure, shiny weapons, action-hero characters and a truly evil bad guy. It is even better because it is a series and that makes it easier to continue the habit of reading once it has begun. It may be filled with fighting, but along with the thrills, it requires a reader to think. And is that not what we want for all our children? Reading is thinking and one can never get too much practice with either.
