The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold Book Summary

A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this brilliant, powerful, and unforgettable new novel by the author of The Lovely Bones and Lucky.

For years Helen Knightly has given her life to others: to her haunted mother, to her enigmatic father, to her husband and now grown children. When she finally crosses a terrible boundary, her life comes rushing in at her in a way she never could have imagined. Unfolding over the next twenty-four hours, this searing, fast-paced novel explores the complex ties between mothers and daughters, wives and lovers, the meaning of devotion, and the line between love and hate. It is a challenging, moving, gripping story, written with the fluidity and strength of voice that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page.

Not as good as Lovely Bones. I wanted to read a more by this author after thoroughly enjoying the Lovely Bones. Unfortunately, I found it hard to like. I almost out it down, in fact. Having said that, after sticking with it for the first hundred pages, I found myself enjoying it more. Not the best book time I have ever spent. And the ending was a huge disappointment. Read it only if you have nothing else your bedside table.

Worst book ever. Sorry it's true. This is a very bad book. The ending made no sense, the story line was worse and the writing was nonsense. "the face of my mothers hole" since when does a hole have a face? Ugh this shouldnt have been published!

Not a strong followup. I'm one of the chorus singing a song of disappointment. While Lovely Bones was far from a perfect novel, the compelling story, likable characters, and generally well-crafted writing made up for most of that story's deficiencies. Not so, with Almost Moon. I found the main characters difficult to like, and yet I always felt like I was supposed to be rooting for them. The agoraphobic, narcissistic mother was the character I found most compelling, but the way the story is written, this isn't actually a book about her. The main character, for whom I think we are supposed to feel SOMETHING, left me flat and uninterested. Stylistically, the narrative slips in and out of the past in ways that are often more confusing than artistic and the narrative flow is jumpy and uneven. The ending of Almost Moon left me cold and unsatisfied. As a writer, I don't consider this a waste of time. I think it is very instructional, actually...but I wonder how many Lovely Bones fans will read this book and leave with an unhappy experience?

Nothing compared to Lucky and Lovely Bones. The ending felt like the middle of the book, upset I spent all the time reading for no real reason.

Different but Good. This book wasn't quite as good as The Lovely Bones but the authors style of writing is not for everyone, The Lovely Bones was something almost anyone could read, this book isn't. She's a little bit dark & you have to be able to have an open mind to writing like that. I enjoyed the book though. Interesting storyline & style, but then again I like a book like that once in a while.

Horrible. Probably the worst book I've ever read. It is dreadfully boring. I'm so mad I wasted my life on this story that went nowhere. Thank goodness I only paid $1 on the paperback version. Don't bother.

For Survivors of Abuse. This book does not deserve all of the terrible reviews it has here. This suspense filled novel is riveting, dark and full of raw emotion. The story takes place over just one full day but is interspersed with flashbacks of the main character’s childhood. For child abuse survivors this book will resonate deeply. I devoured it in a day or two because I couldn’t put it down.

Amost Moon. I like the author Alice Sebold and was drawn to this book because it was listed as a reference in another book called Room. I had read also Lovely Bones. Alice Sebold doesn't waste time or space. She gets right to the heart of the story right away and then takes you in and out of the complex maze that is woven. It was a shocking beginning and a rather unsatisfying ending(it leaves you hanging) but I suppose that was meant to be considering the subject matter. Not for the faint- hearted but a very human story told with understanding by a very gifted writer.

The Almost Moon. Depressing book. Leaves you empty.
