Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .

The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestseller The Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.

A cult classic of our generation. It's an incredible book about the coming of age as a wizard involving drugs, sex, magic and violence and the struggle of living with untold power at your command. 10/10 adult Harry Potter

Thrilling. First let me start out by saying this book is amazing. I just finished it (at 3 in the morning) and I've never been left with such a feeling. If you're anything like me, this book will be very relatable. It's characterization is definitely it's most amazing feature, Grossman's disregard for what is appropriate makes his characters real. The story is not anything to be given five stars to. It was slightly predictable, not bad in any sense of the word, however while the book is about magic, the story doesn't stop being about people. It is oddly divided into parts that don't necessarily force themselves together, however if you do happen to get bored in the early stages, get through it. I don't think a younger me would have had the attention span for it, but it's so well written I couldn't help myself. This book is about a boy fresh out of high school who faces the problem of looking for happiness, enjoy

Good book. Hard to get into but when you do your hooked. Some slow parts but overall good story.

Not worth the time. While the beginning was intriguing, it soon became boring and so far fetched, it was barely worth finishing. If you want to live in a fantasy world, it might be your cup of tea. Otherwise, skip it.

100 Words or Less. Another novel with good reviews, and yet it struck me so stale and well-worn: Young outcast steps from his world into another to find mysterious powers. Wait, wasn’t that already done in the Witch in the Wardrobe? Okay, maybe that’s unfair. The writing was well done. The plot was … yawn. Sorry, I couldn’t get past pg. 30. I felt I’ve been through all of this before. Maybe I’m the wrong target audience. This might be better for teenagers and below? Possibly, though I enjoy Harry Potter and others. Oh well, just not for me, I guess.

The Magicians. I liked the book. The concept of the school and the mechanism for magic were very good, as was the storyline. I hated the main character. He's a whiny douchbag to start the book, and by the end he's still a whiny douchbag and a coward as well. I was actually hoping he'd get killed in the fights at the end. No such luck. Maybe he'll grow up or die in the sequel.

Magical. A friend requested this book to me, so I picked it up and read it in two days. It was difficult to put down. I can honestly say it was awesome. It's an adult Harry Potter meets Narnia. I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for pure magical adventure. Just read it and find out for yourself.

Better than Expected. So I’ll keep this short. I’m up to date on The Magicians Tv Series (January 2019) and after looking at all these 1-2 star reviews I was pretty hesitant to pick up this book, in fear that it would be make me appreciate the show less. However, I’ve found to appreciate the characters more. The book is vastly different from the tv-series. You could even say it’s just a different timeline; Quentin is complex and very down to earth. His sadness and depression don’t trump his decision making, but influence it greatly. He’s more than just a mopey character in this. You finally understand his decisions in great detail. I will say this book is extremely thorough, sometimes highlighting random details that have no real meaning in the book. But this helped me grasp each situation better. 4/5, can’t wait to pick up book #2.

Disapointed. Lots of promises, but the book fails in bringing home most of the stories. The story is diluted in trying to go in every direction possible and looses focus on what is important.

Well Written Crap. For the most part, the title says it all. The book is well written, sure, but at least three fourths of it is just the characters drinking, having sex, and whining to each other or to themselves about their lives and how pointless everything is or how bored they are. The last quarter of the novel become slightly different in that the characters act more than just talk, drink, and think, but overall it's not nearly enough to counterbalance the rest of the story. Maybe it might all mean something more to some people but for the average reader, it's a pretty pointless story that never really goes anywhere till it's nearly over and even then it turns out to be false hope. The ending doesn't make me wish to read the next book in the series either, rather it urges me to find a way to come face to face with the author Lev Grossman so I might punch him solidly in the nose.

Hmmm a bit of a Cliche, but still a VERY Great Read.. I am a reader by default, Most of my time is done reading books. When I saw the title of this book I had some consideration of passing it by, but I was Curious beyond my own standards of Curiousity, so as always I borrowed a copy from my pal in Barnes & Noble and read the first chapter to get a generalized idea of the book. I was so on the edge of my seat I used my iPhone 4s to purchase the book on my phone. I will admit this BOOK was an Excellent Read for its such Obvious Already made cliches.....for example this BOOK in all seriousness is actually a Random if not well thought out Mash up of Harry Potter but in College, Narnia but with a Magic Button, Lord of the Rings, D & D, and a Few other NERD related Topics, as well as adding in the Personality of Homer Simpson WITH an ACTUAL Intelligence above 137. Aside from the Cliche Mash up of the most recent Nerd Hysteria, the Magicians was worth reading from beginning to end.

Not an original thought in this authors head. What others have described as "paying tribute" to fantasy classics, I see as trying to cash in on the ideas of other, far better writers. There is so much in this book that is blatant plagiarism, as far as I'm concerned. It's pathetic. I might not be so irritated by this if it was actually a good book, but alas, I cannot think of a single redeeming quality. Initially, the book caught my attention when someone described it as "Harry Potter for adults". Unfortunately, this didn't mean that it was more intellectually stimulating, as I had hoped... it simply meant that the author decided to litter it with pointless vulgarity and sex, that did nothing to advance the plot - but rather, did little more than show what a poor writer the author is. It's a dry read, with an exceedingly disappointing ending. I only wish I had got this from the public library instead of literally throwing that money away. If this review is not enough to convince you, then at least do yourself a favor and get it from the library. You will regret spending money on this book!

Love exploring this world. The author has done a fantastic job creating this world that scratches at a Harry Potter itch, but with a creative take on magic school. Unfortunately, I saw the show before reading the book and the show had really taken this story to the next level... that said, I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series. In my experience reading books adapted for the screen, book is better than movie & TV show is better than book. I still respect the original work, just wish I’d gotten to it first!

Terrible, horrible, and oh so boring. Can't believe I even got halfway through this book before finally tossing it aside. God its so boring. Anyways I have three big issues with this book. First off let me say descriptive writing is nice, but should be used in moderation. I don't need to know the hues and scents of every single tree Quentin (the main character) walks past. He describes every single idiotic thing to the point where I became very agitated. Secondly, can I just ask the author what sort of crack he was smoking when he came up with this fantasy world. At some points the storyline is so screwed up. I felt critically disturbed during many scenes in the book. This is also coming from someone who read Game of Thrones and watches American Horror Story. Lastly Quentin. Oh Quentin you are the worst main character I have had the burden of following in this adventure. He is shallow, and just keeps on pitying himself. We get it, your best friend and one true love didn't fall for you and your friends don't pay attention to your whims and woes. Boo hoo who cares. You don't have to be so boring. But sadly you are and those the very reason I absolutely despise this book.

Chronicles of Potter... That's what the title should have been for this book. Not wanting to read the multi-novel series of The Chronicles of Narnia AND Harry Potter? Look no further, this book is perfect for you because it is a compilation of stolen ideas from both of these epic adventures. For everyone else, don't believe the hype. This book was OK at best. Some parts were interesting but didn't lead to a true climactic experience. Second half of the novel is almost entirely fragmented thoughts and finishes with an ending that is as uneventful as most of the book. Read when you're bored. Not going to be pushing onward to the sequel of this series.

The Magicians. A rather sad cross between C. S. Lewis and J. K. Rowling with none of the originality of either. Way too much teenage sex without any depth of emotion. I was bored silly with the ridiculous angst and "woe-is-me what is my purpose in life?". Sorry that I bothered with this one and won't read more of this author. Life is too short to waste on bad books.

Both sides are correct.. I personally enjoyed this book. I can see how many wouldn't . It's being ' sold' as a Mature Harry Potter or what not, so those looking for a Fantasy Diversion might be disappointed. However, the homage/critical analogies to prior fantasy canon is much older source material. It really is well written, and the ending could go either way, and I don't think it warrants a sequel. Series are built on the characters therein and these characters are cleverly designed so we don't care too much for them.

Great read!!. This is one of the rare books that the hero really isn't a hero. He's a messed up kid that continues to be messed up. But that's totally ok in literature. The story line was quick, spanning 6 years, and felt very "Harry potter-Esque" while he was still in school. Unlike Harry Potter, there are a lot of adult things happening, and the drama that goes along with it. They go to a different world (that we hear all about through the Hero's love of a children's series), and the author does a great job of giving just enough detail to let our imaginations figure out what things look like. He does actually connects things together, which is a major bonus. The writing style is intelligent (lots of big words) and there are some wonderful turn of phrases (my favorite: malignant menagerie). Overall, I'd say 4/5 stars, losing a star only for the slight drag in the middle between school (which was interesting) and the plot leading up to the new magical land.

Great book, but don't expect a Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia. I think that most of the negative reviews were expecting a literal "more mature" Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia. While it does draw on some of the aspects of both, it is in no way a version of either. Doing so would be like saying that A Song of Fire and Ice is like an r-rated version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was recommended to me as a "take on the magical school genre" which is a much better way of describing it than as "Adult Harry Potter." I would think that this book would appeal more to teenagers than adults. It's a fairly realistic take on the fantasy genre, with a much more existentialist view that I wholly enjoyed. The book calls into question the dangers surrounding "magical solutions" (the easy way out), morality, and other good "coming of age" topics. Though he might not be for everyone, as another depressed, well-off, and existentialist to the point of pretentiousness teenager, I found the main character to be somewhat relatable, and almost a review of what I'd recently been thinking about. Some may complain that his unhappiness is drawn out, but isn't that the case in real life? I still found it irritating at points, but I suppose that other people probably feel/felt the same of me. In that way, it almost reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye, another book that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although many of the school parts of the book were slow and the main character irritating at times, I'd still recommend this book. I'd recommend it the same way it was recommended to me: Read it for a totally different take on the magical school genre.

Harry potter goes to narnia. And while there he does crack. It shouldn't be a good book but it is.

Not compelling. Started reading and kept up through the whole book, just hoping that at some point along the way I would actually want to root for the main character, but the author has created a whole cast of characters who are caricatures of sad people, so mired in depression and absorbed with their own unhappiness that they are impossible to relate to. Sure, there are a lot of big words in the book and my vocabulary is a bit better because of it, but to call the author the modern day heir of c.s. Lewis is an insult to the latter - I couldn't identify with these characters at all and in the end didn't even care what happened to them.

Should have trusted the reviews. This book was as slow and disappointing as many of the reviews suggest. If you enjoy general hopelessness and believe the world is a desolate place devoid of meaning and purpose, then have at it. I am at least grateful that I was gifted the iTunes money that bought this book so that I was spared wasting my money and have only lost my time.

Waiting. Our main character Q never quite developed, with all his gifts he just never achieves anything.

Snoozer. So boring. Felt like a poorly written rip off of Lion Witch Wardrobe and Harry Potter that was trying to “be cool.” i stopped reading 3/4 through and had enough. Wish i could get my money back!!!

Not a fan. I read this book. It's called 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe/The Magicians Nephew'. His utter theft of Narnia literature and story ideas made me almost angry. Yes, this is R-rated. But R-rated done poorly. He is terrible need of a new editor too. The school section moved way too slowly and was quite boring, and the remaining Narnia-esque bits still not quite thought through. I wouldn't recommend.

Strong characterization in a fantastically believable setting. I found the characters highly believable and the existential problems to be a realistic take on what people would feel if they were actually all-powerful. This was explicitly, if not exactly a reply to Harry Potter and Narnia, at least a statement made in the context of them, and it was well done. It's a book that deserves its chance to impress you; I suspect it won't disappoint. (One reviewer complained about teenage sex. I felt the sex scenes were motivated and appropriate, and the characters were not teenagers. Oh well - can't please everybody.)

Enjoyment for all who love the idea of magic!. Great book... Awesome descriptions... Fun story line... A must read for all!

Totally absorbing story!. I am a prolific reader, and most books don't merit a mention ,but The Magicians is one story that will resonate with anyone who has ever wished the fantasy was real.

Off the charts. This book is an amazing piece. The author drew heavily from Narnia and Harry potter but the book isn't just another clone of those series but an adult rated version of what would happen if Harry potter met reality and not fantasy. If your looking for a happy ending it's not in this book, but rather it provides a unique perspective on life.

Great book!. This book is great. People that say it isn't are weird and should stop being so full of themselves. I like how the people that are saying they couldn't get passed all the negativity then write a negative review.

book review. highly recommend. very well written, great character development, and really keeps you interested. so sad to see it end.

It is practically plagiarism!. I know they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this book really upset me. My parents read the Chronicles of Narnia to me and my siblings and it was one of my favorite series of stories growing up. Perhaps C.S. Lewis would have been more forgiving than I, but we're I him, I would be rolling in my grave. Had I submitted this work in college as my own work, I am next to certain I would have been expelled for academic dishonesty.

Great. Writing - Depressing Story. Well written tale. Incredibly unlikeable main character. Overall very depressing book about a self centered narcissist wizard who refuses to grow up. No way I would read the second book.

The only book I’ve ever HATED.. I despised this book with a passion. I kept waiting for it to redeem itself, but it never did. This blatantly rips off Narnia, Harry Potter, and other classic works of fantasy, then sullies them with drugs, hate, violence, and a cast of the least likable, least admirable characters you could possibly imagine. I felt like this book was carelessly and sneeringly raping my childhood - and I do NOT use that word lightly. This book left me feeling sick.

Dry and disappointing. Also depressing...

Love the show. Can’t get into the book.. I’ve been trying for a year. I’ve made it 29%. The writing style just isn’t for me. I do love that this inspired such an amazing show though.

Not your mother Harry Potter. The premiss of the book maybe magic, but it's more like a walking tore of the spoiled and over indulge. This book has less to do with Harry potter and more to do with the movie less then zero.

Not really Harry potter. This is a serious book! I went in thinking it was going to be an adventure like harry potter but that is not the case. It's a little slow and angry. Despite a feeling of dread I was compelled to finish the book. It was interesting and sucked me in but I did feel strange once it was over.

Superb!!!!. I thought this book was great, it was a story inside a story and both were great

Slow and depressing. The book is slow, not much happens. Plus, none of the characters are good people, or even like able.

I loved this book. I felt it was great story telling and looked forward to getting home to read it every night.

Awful is too nice. To compare this book to Harry Potter and Narnia is a slap in the face to those books. The only reason I stuck it out was because of a book club and we all kept hoping it would get better. The author is a horrible story teller and gives way too much details in unimportant parts of the book and doesn't give enough detail when it is needed. Seventy percent of this book could be eliminated and it might make for a better story. How someone can rip off story plots from two fantastic books and STILL write an atrocious book is beyond me. In order to really enjoy a book a reader needs to care about the characters. That was not the case with a single one of the characters in this story. All of the characters are boring with very little depth. Not to mention the minimal dialogue that was sadly laughable. Quentin, the main character, is a whinny, wimpy, forgettable character. This story is a two part series and even though the first book ends with a cliff hanger, I'm not even going to consider reading the second book. I care too little about what happens to ANY of these characters to put myself through reading another one of these books. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Meh. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, but really really disliked the main character. I very much liked the story but am not a fan of the writing style. Oh well. Didn't stop me from buying the next two books.

Meh.... Not much here to like. The characters are flat, the story is slow, and boring. Don’t waste your time.

Boring and Depressing. I agree with several reviewers that the characters were so depressing, it was hard to ever be interested in what was happening to them. Eventually I just stopped because the story was dragging and hadn't kept my attention since the end of the free sample. Don't waste your time or money!

Watch the tv show. Narrative structure: okay Descriptive voice: great Characters… sigh: I was constantly distracted by Quentin’s attention to the most useless of details and frankly the juvenile methods he uses to “get what he wants.” I’ve never seen such pouting before, a main character on a magical adventure to another land being such a drag. This book feels like catcher in the rye with somehow less charm but somehow tries show itself as being emotionally “gritty.” It’s whiny. There were so many missed opportunities here, so many opportunities the show on SyFy has taken advantage of. It’s distracted how doom and gloom Quentin is. It’s disappointing that Elliot is nothing more than a high functioning alcoholic except for when the plot requires him to not be. “Janet” (on the show she is named Margo, which is honestly such a good change) sorta just boils down to a mean, straight to the point, sexual deviant who likes discord. Oh yeah, Hoberman. According to Grossman, Hoberman’s the fat one. That’s basically his whole character. Poor poor Alice. On the show, they explored her pain regarding her brother and such and I felt for her. I felt for her struggle to be patient and to seek answers. In the book, she’s just a sexual conquest and even she uses sex as a weapon. Quentin does. “Janet” does. This book doesn’t understand how sex works. It doesn’t understand how relationships work. It doesn’t act upon its greatest opportunities because Grossman doesn’t want to commit to them, he’d rather have characters throw around fat jokes and have ruminate on incel thoughts. I’m telling you, the book is long, full of weird word choices (hermaphrodite, being my favorite) and its main character is basically a sheltered white boy who has never seen people different than him and acts like it. Watch the show, you literally lose nothing if you don’t read the book. All the book will make you do is scream at it for not taking advantage of its own premise. (The show suffers from its own poor choices too. But every point that’s expanded on from the book itself is fleshed out and feels authentic to what the books are about: a normal world with magic.)

Magic. A good solid coming of age novel. The use of magic to move the story line is what makes this a better than average read. The one negative is the way the author keeps grinding away at the "I am not happy theme" for the hero. The ending was very unsatisfactory. I know it was a set up for the next installment but it seemed inconsistent with the story. Q makes a decision about the course of his life does not consult with his friends and ten seconds after they show up he tosses his "carefully thought out plans" right out the window. Pun intended. The ending does not make me want to rush right out and get the next installment. It makes me wonder if the next ending will be as unsatisfactory.

PLEASE DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. I hate you, George RR Martin. I bought this book just because he said it's boozier version of Harry Potter. I turned a blind eye to all the negative reviews just because he said so. It's not in any way comparable to the (quality of) Harry Potter. It's more a ripoff of Narnia. It's a Narnia fan fiction . . . a really terible horrible awful one.

The magicians. Bleakness leading to bleakness.I kept reading, hoping against hope that this book would get good at some point. It never does. If you like characters who are constant drunks, never grow to adulthood, never find a shred of happiness, this book is for you. There is never any int of learning magic either. It,s like practicing musical scales for life and never getting to play a concerto. Yuck!

Charming and articulate. I found this book to be original, well paced, complex and populated with likable and diverse characters. There is a wry wit and subtle humor running through even the most somber scenes that is quite appealing. This book does play a vague homage to the works of C.S. Lewis, in that the parallel universe of Fillory lays behind the main story, in theory accessible through a closet or clock much like Lewis' land of Narnia. Fillory is more evocative of early 20th century fantastical literature as a whole, however, as it is not burdened by the hamfisted Christian propoganda that awkwardly mired Lewis’ work. It is also chocked full of brief allusions to many other works of high fantasy. I have read a number of reviews here that claimed that this story was depressing, dull, overly complex, the characters unlikable. I suspect that these are written by those who read only the lightest of fiction and perhaps not in great quantity. This is a nice piece of fantastical literature with some depth to it. It is not, however, a major undertaking such as Ulysses by James Joyce or even Dhalgren by Samuel Delaney. While I would agree that this book touches on ‘mature themes’ relative to some light fantasy literature, this is not Harry Potter for adults ( If pressed, I would reserve that concept for Susanna Clarke’s astonishing 'Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell', a work superior to this or the Potter books) as that reference could imply that this work is singularly derivative, which it is not. It’s its own thing, and that thing is engrossing and magnetic.

Ugh. It's basically a Harry Potter/Narnia knock off.

A Classic Fantasy. Not only is this book beautifully written full of unforgettable images it is also a terrific antidote to Harry Potter. It is fantasy for adults, i.e. adults who like to read. It is definitely not childish with its irony, self awareness and references to other works a fantasy, old and new. My highest praise for any work of art is to say that 'it touched me'. This book wonderfully did just that.

Descent into Absurdity. Though deftly written, The Magicians wants to be so many things and only succeeds at being occasionally funny. It starts as a more serious character study that cleverly subverts expectations about a Hogwarts-style magic school but quickly descends into video-game-like mayhem and silliness. Too many characters get dragged along for the final rushed adventure and the fantasy world feels more like a half-baked middle finger to Narnia than a real place.
