The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by A. N. Roquelaure & Anne Rice Book Summary

Before E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey and Sylvia Day's Bared to You, there was Anne Rice’s New York Times best seller The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty
In the traditional folktale of "Sleeping Beauty," the spell cast upon the lovely young princess and everyone in her castle can only be broken by the kiss of a Prince. It is an ancient story, one that originally emerged from and still deeply disturbs the mind's unconscious. In the first book of the trilogy, Anne Rice (author of Beauty's Kingdom), writing as A.N. Roquelaure, retells the Beauty story and probes the unspoken implications of this lush, suggestive tale by exploring its undeniable connection to sexual desire. Here the Prince awakens Beauty, not with a kiss, but with sexual initiation. His reward for ending the hundred years of enchantment is Beauty's complete and total enslavement to him . . . as Anne Rice explores the world of erotic yearning and fantasy in a classic that becomes, with her skillful pen, a compelling experience. Readers of Fifty Shades of Grey will indulge in Rice’s deft storytelling and imaginative eroticism, a sure-to-be classic for years to come.

Praise for The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty:

"Articulate, baroque, and fashionably pornographic." —Playboy

"Something very special . . . at once so light and yet so haunting." —The Advocate

Beyond awful. Really trash--degrading. There was no beauty is this story.

Did not like it. I have read many of Anne Rice's novels and always found them intelligent , elegant , interesting, face paced with great stories and characters with psychological depth. Her historical recreations have been atmospheric and magical and I have found her gothic baroque poetic prose style quite enticing. This novel is just terrible not exciting at all. I found the characters boring . While her other Rice novels have great sensuality, this series is just repetitive, blunt and yucky. I do not like her Roquelaure style. I have read other sensual writers that maintain the readers interest with suspense and with well crafted stories like the Marquis de Sade, Anais Nin, Nobokov, Delaclos, Garcia Marquez, etc.. I am disillusioned ...couldn't even finish it Very bad literature. I expected much more from Rice. Awful awful.

Can't get past the first three chapters. Most degrading book I've ever read. And that's just the first three chapters. So disgusted!!!

Hot. Not one boring page.

Gross!!!!. I couldn't even finish reading this. There is absolutely no redemption in this book, it's all sickening. Save your money.

Not what I was expecting.... I knew that this book was mostly about submission, but I struggled to finish the book. During some scenes I was so uncomfortable I had to skip a few pages. It's not worth reading if you want a love story or even a hot sex scene or two.

Shockingly bad!. No character development. No pleasant interactions. No romance. No kindness. Not worth the money. Really poor taste. I am all for pushing boundaries, but when there are no redeeming qualities it is worthless.

Great read. I have not yet been let down by any Anne Rice books. They are all very good in there own way. I love her vampire chronicles and was kinda skeptic about reading this. But I thought I would give it a shot and it was worth it. Although to the person who said Beauty is 15 read the part where it said she slept for a hundred years. I think she might be 115.

What!!. This is nothing like 50 Shade ..it's weak and boring..you will only finish the book cuz you waisted money buying it

Awful. This is the worst book I've ever read!!

I’d give -1000000 if I could. Raping kids is not ok, even in a book.. Raping a child of 15 is not ok... it doesn’t matter how old the rapist is or how the victim responds after. Romanticizing this is sick. Get help Ann, you are what’s wrong with our world.

If you're into that sort of thing,. Not for everyone, but I loved it. Anne Rice is a great writer and she twists the tale of Sleeping Beauty to an erotic anti-fairy tale.

Sick& Disgusting. I can not began to say how awful this book is I could not read it through. I got sick to my stomach reading about a man raping another man. This is simply a book about RAPE and human torture. 50 Shades of Grey can not compare because it had love and it was consensual. I can't believe someone would try to compare these two books. I am about love and happiness, not brutal sexual immorality. Don't buy this sick garbage. If you like this book, think about young innocent children.

What Horrific News Stories are Made of. Spoilers : So let's recap the first few chapters. Prince wakes 15 year old Sleeping Beauty from her coma as he's raping her. He then tells her all she must do for the rest of her life is live only to please him and do everything he asks quickly and without question. He forces the minor to parade through the towns behind his horse, naked (in front of her parents and friends no less) and allows the men of the village to fondle her and watches as she sobs silently in humiliation and fear. At dinner, he forces her - still naked - to eat from the floor like a dog, crawling on her hands and knees to get stuff for him. He has her paddled naked until she has welts in front of the town's men and his soldiers. He forces her to walk always with her hands behind her head or crawling in the ground. And through all of this, she's not a willing, adult participant but a sobbing, terrified, 15 year old child. If this gets you off, you might be a serial killer.

Blatant Attempt at getting $$. 1. This book was published in 1999. So any references to this book and 50 Shades, is just advertising. 2. This is nothing like BDSM Erotica. It's an exercise in what someone thinks they know what the BSDM world is like with no experience and certainly NO research. 3. This is a book about people with power torturing people without. There is absolutely nothing sexy, sexual or emotional in these books. It's more about breaking down someone's will with a whip. If I wanted that, I'd read psycho-sexual horror novels. Don't buy this book - or any of these books. If you're looking for a book that's good for BDSM Erotica - look to authors like Cherise Sinclair, Reese Gabriel, Desiree Hold, Delilah Devlin, Sam Crescent, Joey W. Hill, Ann Jacobs… and that's just to name a few. But the Beauty novels… they are NOT about Safe, Sane or Consensual BDSM relationships.

Garbage. Beyond ridiculous. Absolute trash. Don’t get lured by descriptions; save your money.

Seriously should have listened.. I read the reviews before buying this book and I should have listened when people said it is not worth the money. If you aren't into torture porn or hardcore humiliation and sadist fetishism then this book will not be for you. I could barely get to the part I'm at now and I really don't think I'll be able to finish it because I'm so disgusted with it. Biggest waste of money I've had in a long time.

Dominates 50 Shades of Grey. As stated in my title, this book completely dominates 50 Shades of Grey. 50 Shades reads like a high school girl's S&M fantasy; Beauty is a book for ADULTS. Beauty is to 50 Shades as Interview with the Vampire is to Twilight. This is a more sophisticated book for a reader who just happens to be interested in the less vanilla side of things. :)

Not good. I think this is disgusting, if your a twisted freak read this I only read the preview and was extremely disappointed on how this beautiful story of sleeping beauty could have turned into a gruesome piece of lit.

Intense. Oh my! As Anne Rice notes in her introduction, this book is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. But if you're into this sort of thing (and trust me, you know if you are) and if Fifty Shades of Grey was several hairs too tame for you... you're in for a treat. It's fantasy, my friends, do keep that in mind.

Uncomfortable. I didn’t realize the age of the character. Made me incredible uncomfortable and feels so wrong.

Don't bother. Not worth reading-at all!! Zero stars should be an option.

Awful. Poorly written, not erotic at all. I'm all for s&m but this is just about people being tortured. I'm not sure who would find this sexy all.

The Claiming of Beauty. Read this trilogy years ago before 50 Shades of Grey was even thought of and continue to re-read it occasionally. While this book is very dark it is also enthralling. Some people may not like it because of how dark it is but for those who are actually interested in something that doesn't feel as if it is aimed for teens and aren't bothered by rape and slavery in a story it is very good and I would recommend it over 50 Shades of Grey any day

Rape in the very first scene.. This book begins with the rape of a minor sleeping beauty. There is no consent. This is not a representation of BDSM and the author should be ashamed of herself.

BETTER THAN 50 SHADES. Why is it better than 50 Shades of Grey? Because it's not a Twilight Fanfiction. It's erotica, it's going to cross boundaries and sometimes make you cringe. But through all three books, the writing is very vivid and colorful and almost realistic. It's Sleeping Beauty, it's based on a fairy tale. After reading a few reviews on here, I'm wondering how many people have actually read erotica prior to 50 Shades of Grey. This is what erotica looks like when a quality author writes.

Gross and boring. I only read this because a friend gave it to me. I am so glad I didn't ever buy this myself; I would have asked for my money back. It is an awful story, not erotic at all, just torture and abuse to the point of being a boring waste of time. I ended up skipping 2 or 3 of the next-to-the-last chapters just to find out how it ended after having wasted so much time already. And I don't feel I missed anything important at all just picking up with the last chapter. I kept thinking all along that it had to get better or have some sort of point, but unfortunately it never did.

Love it. Definitely not for everyone. For me this will be something I continue to read over the span of my life. Anne Rice just has this way of captivating and enthralling her audience in even the most disturbing of times in anything she writes and I fully enjoy each and every journey.

Not a children's book!!. Ok, so i read 50 shades, loved it. Bought this one because of the comparison advertised on the cover, there is no comparison. 1st Rice book I've ever read, i read all 3 beauty books, many times my mouth was hitting the floor in shock and awe and Im no prude!! This book kept me reading. VERY INTENSE READ.. And certainly not ur average fairy tale. Its sleeping beauty on sexual acid an I enjoyed reading all three books!!! Its not for everyone, and it shouldn't have been compared to 50 shades. If u didnt enjoy it and its not ur thing thats fine, some people like to read a story that has a completely different spin on a subject, no need to bash the author or her style of writing. You either like it or u dont. Read it or dont. Not everything is for everybody.

Gross!!. Do not make the mistake that I did where on the cover it was written...."if you liked 50 shades you will love this book!!....this book is nothing like 50 shades... It is abusive and the torture within the first few chapters has me disgusted. At least with 50 shades the writer had you feel for the characters and there was caring. In This book you have ppl just plain out torturing very young people. I could read no more. If you are into that kinda stuff you might like it, but those of you that fell in love with the 50 shades series and looking for something similar this is absolutely not the series to get into.

Don’t waste your time. This was the worst book I have ever read!!!

dearest 50 shades fans.... this book is real erotica. 50 shades is very, very tame stuff that does not agree with my idea of bdsm.

Claiming of sleeping beauty. I was disappointed and I see no reason to read this crap.

Sick sick sick. A friend if mine posted the cover on Facebook. As a lover of 50 Shades I thought why not read this. Well I was horrified to say the least. What happens in this book is something no one should ever have to endure. Sure it's fiction but WTH was the author thinking by writing about nothing but torture. Poor Beauty and all the other sex/tortured slaves...what a degrading novel to women and men all around. Only finished the first book because I kept hoping this nonsense would stop and beauty would be allowed to be a princess as she was. Not reading the other two and wish I had read all the comments cause I would have saved me $14! Unless you are into sick torture then DO NOT waste your money.

Degrading. Degrading to women and men. Beauty is 15 years old and is constantly defiled by her "Prince". This book was gross and absurd with no plot.

Clamping of sleeping beauty. This was WILD! I gotta say, its not for everyone but it is a VERY good book. I don't think I have read another book that has had me so enthralled. GREAT READ!!!!!!!

Disappointed. Stopped reading within the 1st 50 pages. Not into a child being rapes and used and abused as a love slave. Love Anne Rice but could not continue reading it.

Not what I expected. At all.. First, I'm not going to bash the book or the author. It was her story to write and no one is forced to read it. My only real complaint is that it wasn't what I expected since it was compared to the 50 Shades trilogy. I don't think you can draw a parallel between the two books at all. There is a considerable difference between a submissive having controlled and consensual sex with a dominant and a slave being relentlessly physically and sexually tortured by a master. The characters in the Beauty trilogy are slaves. They don't have the courtesy of free will. There were some extremely graphic parts that were difficult for me to read and there were parts that made me cheer for specific characters. Overall it was an uncomfortable read for me. Bared to You is a much closer parallel to 50 Shades for anyone that is looking.

Disappointed after the first few pages.. No buildup at all. Couldn’t feel a thing for the first 10 pages. I am glad she feels this is sexually liberating, but it honestly just feels like your usual porn script, fantasy style. No mystery or anything. Really disappointed, since this came from such a famous author.

foul..... I'm all for the First Amendment and all but this book needs banned.... Absolutely disgusting!!!

Disturbing. Less than 1 star if I could. Gross. I liked the movie “Interview with a Vampire” and thought because it was by the same author I’d be getting a cool take on a fairytale- not a gross extremist porn novel where the main character is only 15!! I was dumb to buy without looking into what it was about, I just never imagined it would be about this! Don’t buy and save your money. I’m shocked this came from the same author.

Sleeping beauty.... This is the lousy and most stupid story / erotica book I ever read... So disappointed with this book... I will not recommend this at all...

AWEFUL read. Bought this book last night. Unless you're really into slapping and men getting sodomized with paddles and sticks, it's safe to say you wouldn't find this book worth paying $11 for. I certainly did not. Terribly repetitive with repeated fascinations about spanking, spanking and more spankings. Waste of time and money.

Claiming sleeping beauty. I was so disappointed in this book! I was disgusted that Beauty was only 15!!! Since the book is being changed so much, then when so young. I just wasted my money and time on this book. :(

Horrible. I want my money back for this book. It is cruel! Not very happy with this purchase. It was more rape than a domination and such.

The claiming of sleeping beauty.. Did not care for this book at all. Vile. I read it because I bought it. Will not buy or read the other two in the trilogy.

Horrible. Not worth it at all, it sick and badly written.

The claiming of sleeping beauty. While reading People magazine it said if you loved "50 Shades" then you will love this book. I couldn't even compare the two. This book is a disgrace! I do not know how it was even published. I did read the reviews prior to downloading, but gave it the benefit of the doubt. Complete waste of time and money!!

Dark. This is not sexy but extremely dark. I'm not damaged enough to understand this and will not read the next two books in the trilogy.

Not an enjoyable read, :(. Loved Shades of Grey, unfortunately this is not even close to the caliper of it. Tried to be open minded as I kept reading, but just kept getting more and more depressed with the storyline. For me, way too much degradation to enjoy and ended up just skimming the last few chapters since it was just the same thing over an over again. Sorry for the low rating but really not an enjoyable read.
