Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert Book Summary

One of the most iconic, beloved, and bestselling books of our time from the bestselling author of City of Girls and Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert.

Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love touched the world and changed countless lives, inspiring and empowering millions of readers to search for their own best selves. Now, this beloved and iconic book returns in a beautiful 10th anniversary edition, complete with an updated introduction from the author, to launch a whole new generation of fans.

In her early thirties, Elizabeth Gilbert had everything a modern American woman was supposed to want—husband, country home, successful career—but instead of feeling happy and fulfilled, she was consumed by panic and confusion. This wise and rapturous book is the story of how she left behind all these outward marks of success, and set out to explore three different aspects of her nature, against the backdrop of three different cultures: pleasure in Italy, devotion in India, and on the Indonesian island of Bali, a balance between worldly enjoyment and divine transcendence.

A joy to read. Written with a sincerity and truth, as though it's a personal conversation with a friend -- who has thought your own thoughts.

Amazing journey of love and forgiveness. I love this book and read it twice in a row. I find the India part a bit dry but actually quite powerful. I've learned a lot about myself as I followed her journey and eventually til she left Bali at the end. I'm so much happier after reading this book that I want to just buy this book and give it to everyone I know. If you are just wondering about it, do yourself a favor and buy it. Read through it. It will change your life. The movie is terrible. Don't judge this book based on what you saw in the movie. They are completely different.

Simply.... Life changing..

Eat, Pray, Love. A fun jaunt through three interesting countries -- you'll come away with a feel for the cultures and the psyche of the author.

Eat, Pray, Love - disappointing. Having watched the movie first, I couldn't wait to read the book. I wanted to learn more about this amazing woman's spiritual journey. Yet the writing was clumsy. There are other ways to write about yourself without starting most sentences with "I". The side comments she put in got annoying. She stated and restated the obvious. The author started with one thought and then drifted off on a long tangent leaving the reader confused and annoyed. I applaud the journey - the courage, the commitment, and the discipline. Yet as a teacher, I respectfully suggest: "This writer needs to take a basic writing course and learn to find various ways to start sentences". Watch the movie, it is great! The book isn't worth the purchase.

Overall great read. It took me a while to finish this book (and I normally devour books in 2-3 days) just due to the author’s especially wordy descriptions and flashbacks. It sometimes takes her two or three pages to get back to the point which can feel excessive at times. HOWEVER, it is still a gem and one I absolutely love. Great overall message. Great read.

Speaks to the heart. If you’re married, read this.

I did enjoy it.... I am late to the fold. I could see that Liz knows how to write. I liked it, but didn't love it. It's good whilst never absorbing me. I am happy for Liz that this book and her path went the way it did. The Bali section was my favorite of the 3.

🙃🙃🙃. It was ok I found it kinda boring

Great reading!. This is one of those books that make you change the way you look at your life. What a great way to spend a quiet weekend curled up under a blanket on your sofa.

Eat, Pray, Love. lovely, life-giving ~ a worthwhile read

Eat, Pray, Love. I enjoyed the journey of this author learning to love herself. What a blessing and encouragement for those of us on our own spiritual path. My life is better because I read this book!

A great book if you're looking to make a change.. Very inspirational. A solid read.

Eat, Pray, Love. Great read!

Excellent book. This is got to be one of my favorite books so far. The author is witty, smart, sensitive, into details and very funny! I had a blast reading it and want to travel like her. Great book for the gals!

Just fantastic. Makes me want to travel, live and love more fully

Love this Book. I have read this book a dozen times.

The perfect novel. Thank you

Eye opener. This book opened my eyes. It made me realize some things about myself & my life! I can see where this book could be boring and slow, but I read it at the perfect time in my life. I found myself jotting down quotes and have NEVER done that before.

Thanks Elizabeth!. Witty and intelligent pilgrimage towards a deeper understanding of the self. If you are more than 25 years old, there is bound to be a lot in it for you here. Highly recommended anyone interested in travel and life's bumpy roads. I don't know about the movie, but this is surely a great and moving read.

Not exactly terrible. I was excited to read this before watching the movie, but was pretty disappointed. It started out okay, but got boring and kinda dragged on. I also found Gilbert to be whiney, conceited, and just plain annoying!

splendid. One of the best books I've read in ages! Makes me want to pack my backpack and leave now. Bravo Liss!

Pretentious, self absorbed... I'm not judging her for getting a divorce if she was unhappy. But wow what a self absorbed and selfish woman. She wanted to be good and spiritual and find herself and all that hokey pokey without caring who she hurt along the way. Since she's become so spiritual and in touch with the cosmic forces, I'm sure that she knows all about karma..

Boring. This book was okay in the beginning but got very boring in middle and also at the end. Had to force myself to finish this book.

Amazing. I soaked up every word Elizabeth Gilbert wrote in this book. It was beautiful, honest, and hopeful.

Boring and self Centered. It’s like reading a self centered persons diary.

Encapsulating. Other than school textbooks, I've never highlighted book pages. This one I did. There were some inspiring quotes and bits of history that I just wanted to be able to reread easily. I'm so in love with this book. I really took my time reading it, enjoying it. Was quite sad when I finished. The way Ms.Gilbert writes just encapsulates you, makes you laugh, cry and live through her words. It wasn't just about her journey, but each place she visited, she taught you history of how it came to be. Taught it in a way that was interesting, that you'd want to learn more. This isn't just a book that you read and discard, it's like a guide book for the way life should be appreciated, respected and loved because this planet has so much to offer sometimes you just gotta take that leap! I will say this, finished this book yesterday and then watched the movie and I thought the movie was AWEFUL. It was rushed, left out a HUGE key character in my opinion and changed some things up in a disappointing way so I recommend READING THIS BOOK FIRST. Or maybe see the movie first so you'll be that much more engulfed in the book.

Life changing book. Must read.

Inspiring. I loved reading the author’s journey from start to finish. It was both moving and inspiring, and also relatable. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style; it was friendly, upbeat, and conversational, as though she were in the room telling you her story, rather than you reading it in a book. Wonderful read. Would recommend.

Boring!. Didn't finish the book, just didn't care about herself absorbed journey. I was dragged to the movie and it was even worse.

Eat, Pray, Snooze. I am not surprised this was made into a movie with Julia Roberts as the star. Wow...I can't believe I wasted my money. I got caught up in the hype. No substance.

A little peace.... My mother sent me this book in the midst of a very painful divorce and in it, I found a little peace. It made me look at my life and ask myself questions that helped me find my way through some pretty dark places. It's a beautiful story of life that I'd recommend to men and women alike who may be struggling through a rough time with love and/or self identity.

A Must Read!!!. This book could quite possibly be the best non-fiction book I have ever read. We all at some point look around at our lives and say "Is this truly my destiny? Is this what i will always be"? Liz Gilbert takes you on her journey of indulgence, self discovery, and faith in a higher power. This book is eye opening and inspirational. May we all be able to find our balance as she has.

TMD. I absolutely loved this book. I have read it once and am reading it again... Every time I feel the need to be inspired, this book is the first thing I turn to. To everyone who said that Liz Gilbert is self centered and annoying... Did you even read the synopsis? The whole story line was based around HER story and in HER point of view. Read your own journal and tell me who self centered... At least Gilbert's story is interesting enough to sell millions of books and have a number one movie. Could we say the same for you? Enjoy...

Enlightening. The movie does not do it justice. What a journey through the darkness and into the light. Truly inspired to “keep on keeping on”. Love and Light...

Its All About Her. Yes, if you want to know everything about someone and not be dating them, then this is the book for you. It felt like a bad date. Look, if life hasn't turned out the way you wanted it to...change. Do something different. Don't just write a book so everyone knows your dirty laundry. Boring.

Explore the world during 3 hour!. I would read this book during my 3 hour American history class everyday. As a high school student, with tremendous amounts of essays to write and assignments to do, you need to get away from it all. This book inspired me. It matured me as a young adult. And I will always remember it, until the day I die, as one of those books I can read over and over. Truly touching.

Dear Liz. Dear Liz Hello, I don't know if you ever gonna read review or not but I need you to know that I am in crisis myself as well and I am going through very dark area and sadness and I started to read your book and tried to do what you done and I am glad that I do that you gave me a new perspective to look at everything and I am in a better state day by day I shall heal and I am thank you and to let you know that YOUR BOOK SAVE MY LIFE!!!!!!

Finding yourself. anyone going through a bad divorce should read this book. Finding your self and happiness again are the only way to truly heal.

Ehhh.... She ate, she prayed, she loved...title says it all. I didn't like that it started off on a negative tone right off the bat...about not wanting babies and wanting out of her marriage. Maybe a little background at first would of been a better start. Some good highlights through out, but it was kind of boring. I really had to try hard to make myself finish it. The best chapters are about the last three or so. Maybe the movie is better, which you never hear anyone say, but just wasn't that into this one.

Excellent. Empowering.. One of the best books I have ever read. Again and again. Each time uncovering a new facet of myself. Well written. Entertaining. Subtly teaching.

Ugh. Treacly, self indulgent twaddle.

Olka. This book changed my life! Thank you!!!

Inspiring. I was deeply touched and moved by this writing and would recommend it to anyone! I must say, however, as much as I Love Julia Roberts and her performance, the movie was basically a seedy love story and did absolutely no justice to the book!

EPL. Life-changing.

Great book!. Loved it!

Wonderful!. This book is one of the best books I have ever read in my entire life

Egotistic. If you want to know how self center is the author go for it. When u don't like something you change it and move on. Writing a book is not going to make it better.

Re-reading 10 years later and love it even more!. A beautiful book, wonderfully written, and genuinely honest. When this book came out I remember relating so much the the beginning of it. I was in a painful place. I had ended a 5 year (almost a marriage type of relationship) and jumped into another one too soon. Today I relate so much more to the ending of the book. It’s like reading it for the first time because I am a different person too. But I can honestly say I loved it then and I love it more now. It’s a wonderful book of growth and self reflection. While it doesn’t inspire me to do what she did, it inspires me to reflect on the last ten years of my life and ask my self the questions she asked herself.

Awesome. While it's a great story by itself, it's almost like a hidden guide for relating, and dealing with one's own depression. I don't think I could have gotten through last year without knowing that I wasn't the only one who felt that way...

Surprisingly amusing. Gilbert manages to tell a story with witty remarks and a peculiar humour. She makes it easy to follow her adventures for an entire year. A must read!

Amazing. This book is inspiring, motivation & thrilling. If you have ever lost your momentum or not sure what to do or where to go ! Always travel!
