A definitive compendium of food wisdom

Eating doesn’t have to be so complicated. In this age of ever-more elaborate diets and conflicting health advice, Food Rules brings welcome simplicity to our daily decisions about food. Written with clarity, concision, and wit that has become bestselling author Michael Pollan’s trademark, this indispensable handbook lays out a set of straightforward, memorable rules for eating wisely, one per page, accompanied by a concise explanation. It’s an easy-to-use guide that draws from a variety of traditions, suggesting how different cultures through the ages have arrived at the same enduring wisdom about food. Whether at the supermarket or an all-you-can-eat buffet, this is the perfect guide for anyone who ever wondered, “What should I eat?”

"In the more than four decades that I have been reading and writing about the findings of nutritional science, I have come across nothing more intelligent, sensible and simple to follow than the 64 principles outlined in a slender, easy-to-digest new book called Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, by Michael Pollan." —Jane Brody, The New York Times

"It doesn't get much easier than this. Each page has a simple rule, sometimes with a short explanation, sometimes without, that promotes Pollan's back-to-the-basics-of-food (and-food-enjoyment) philosophy." —The Los Angeles Times

Food Rules (Michael Pollan) Book Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Good advice, but maybe too little content?. Most of the "rules" are pretty common sense, and it's nice to have them all in once place. I think most of us know them, but we just don't pay attention to them. I'm a slow-ish reader and I got through the book in about an hour. Feels more like a big article. At least it makes me feel better, since I can now say that "I have read an entire book in one sitting". The price of the book (I paid $9.99) led me to believe that I would find more content. Very good nonetheless. I'm pretty bad at snacking too much, but my next snack will be an apple rather than chips!

Sample contains nothing!. Are you serious? There's no text in the sample, just a table of contents. Nothing against the author, whose other work is terrific.

Horrible abuse of the term "book". What a joke. Each chapter has 1 little common sense fact. This could have easily been 1 free web page. Or this "book" could have easily been 1 page. Five bucks is just plain wrong for this.

Food. Very sensible and easy to read. This book is a must have so, you may refresh your beliefs in managing your daily food intake and manners. Thank you for keeping it REAL!!!!

Good quick read. This fun lively book tells us what should be obvious but unfortunately is not.

Short and sweet. More of a pamphlet than a book, but good (though quite basic content). A good buy if you're dyslexic or 5; otherwise, just read it at barnes and noble in an hour.

Food Rules. Weak. Dont waste your money on this book. More like an article than a book and certainly not worth the $10 i paid. Most of it obvious to anyone who has read anything about nutrition. Nothing here you don't learn in Pollans 2 brilliant books "in defense of food" and " the omnivores dilemma"

A reminder. This book is a great reminder, but I suggest reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. TOD will help clarify some of these rules and has much more depth.

Easy read great gift. As others have pointed out everything in this book is information we have learned from Pollan's other amazing books and documentaries - however the point of this book is to give an easy read (you can read it in a single day at the beach) to people who are new to these "rules" and ideas. This is especially important to people who are intimidated by and misinformed about our food system and its current state. In a society where I have unfortunately had more than one parent inform me during a discussion about food that they teethed their children on beef jerky these rules are not common sense for the majority of the public and is a great book to keep on hand as you meet more and more people who are wanting to learn more about the right way to eat. Overall - food rules is a great starting place for anyone wanting to learn about the right foods to eat to truly nourish ourselves instead of merely feeding.

Good solid read. Some things in here that will really make you think. The author keeps it simple, but impactful. Here's to healthy eating.

Love :D. I loved this book with all my heart. When I go to the grocery store, I buy whole wheat bread instead of white and I look at the ingredients to make sure that what I'm eating isn't full of sugar and is something a third grader could read. I find this book to be helpful and I am going to buy all of the authors books now :)

Duh.. The rules in this book are such no brainers that you'll be saying "well duh, why don't more people realize this?"

One of the most important books of my generation.. This book offers more than just food habits, it offers rules that should govern your entire life, extending past the kitchen. I would recommend this to anyone, I want to buy a copy for everyone I know. Thank you Michael Pollan, for your relentless quest to help the western world adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Worth having around. This book is a lot handier than I was expecting, given the reviews that compare it to In Defense of Food. Sure, you won't find anything here you can't find in Defense, but you also won't have to look as hard. So, no need to buy this if you're looking for new information, but it's nice to have on hand (handier) if you're looking for solid reminders on a regular occasion. Bottom line: you're much more likely to flip through this once and a while than you are anything more substantive, so this is probably the better "investment," even if you already own Pollan's other books.

Easy read but missing Pollan's usual heft. This is a quick read that briefly expands on mostly generally known (less generally followed) rules to healthful food consumption. Written in Michael Pollan's comfortable, readable way this book sticks to the rules and leaves out the scientific explanations for the common man that he is often known for. If you are looking for the hard science and his witty, nonsensical explanation of the science and history behind these rules I'd recommend reading In Defense of Food, instead.

Food Rules. I read this book in one sitting. It's easy, enjoyable, funny, and very helpful for navigating the labyrinths we call grocery stores and kitchens. I also highly recommend Anticancer and The China Study, for more in-depth, book-length coverage of some of the topics in this short eating companion. Taken with a grain of salt (but not too much!), this is a very good read. Definitely recommended.

Tips To Live By. Simple and easy to read, but at the same time offers up some of the most useful and straightforward guidelines on how we can make better choices about the foods we eat. For the price, this book is a no brainer.

Lame sample. I'm sure this book is great because I've read his other books but mr publisher you might want to consider showing actual pages of the text in your sample version instead of blank pages, copyright and "other books by this author". Doh

A good appetizer, where is the main?. Over all an enjoyable read with sound advice and a great place to start for those just learning the benefits of fruits and vegetables over cookies and cakes. I was hoping for more details and science to back up the "rules". Fascinating facts like how the body processes different combinations are too few and far between for this reader. Hoping his other books are more in depth

Cancer Survival. I am a 40 year old woman who is now in remission!! After my last Chemo treatment I consulted with the nutritionist at the Cancer Center! She told me about plant based diets, staying away from the WHITES(flour, potatoes, bread, rice, and refined sugar)! She also talked to me about staying away from artificial sweeteners, and nitrates in meat!! Anyway, long story short, this book has been so helpful with following what the nutritionist has instructed me to do!! I recommend this highly!!!

Wonderfully accessible. This book is a smart, fun, and fast read. Pollan does a wonderful job of simplifying the basics of healthy eating. Those who want to eat healthy, but are often overwhelmed by the seemingly endless supply of information from nutritionalists and food scientists will delight in this collection of accessible recommendations.

Wonderful and easy to read. This book is awesome. Everyone’s must have to read. Even if you are not going to start eat healthy, just read it. I love it. I have read it for 2 days!

Acupuncturist view on foods. This book is right on, I wish every one of our patients could read and implement these rules into their lives.

Simple Answers to Complex Questions. This short, easy to read and understand guide book is filled with easy to implement "rules." The rules act as guidelines to help you sort through the maze of possibilities when asking yourself what you *should* eat. This book is basically a distillation of the knowledge the author gained in researching and writing "Th Omnivore's Dilemma." It's a set of "common sense" answers that for some reason you never thought of. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to make positive changes in their eating habits, but doesn't know where to start. You will find the simple answers you're seeking here. And you'll find them extremely easy to put into practice. This is starting to sounds like a back cover pitch for the book, but the truth is that I'm just passionate about healthy eating. And most of the rules in this book are things I've told my close friends over the years when they've asked me how to make better choices. It really is a great resource for anyone concerned with their health and the health of their families. And unlike most books of this kind, it doesn't require any drastic changes to your life. Just simple guidelines to use when making decisions about food. You will never regret owning this book.

Interesting and to the point!. You will most definitely learn something from this book and merge it into your everyday habits without thinking. Resourceful, logical, and to the point.

The easy version of OD. If The Omnivore's Dilemma is too long and complex for your tastes, Food Rules is quite the opposite. Based on all the same science and philosophy, these rules are short and easy to apply.

Vital information.. (Hopefully) common sense.. Simple way of explaining a healthy diet, however ten dollars is ridiculous now that I know it's a forty five minute read.

Fast easy read. Great book, easy read and very informative. I learned a lot and helped me with my choices of foods to eat. Worth the money!

Food Rules. This was a short and fast read that gave rational suggestions for healthy eating while being humorous. I especially liked his three word term for processed food--read the book to find out what it is.

Where's the 'meat and potatoes'?. If you're looking for what this book is about, download the sample and read the chapter titles. There isn't much more to it than that. I feel completely ripped off. I was looking for a guideline for healthy eating and all I got was a few tid bits of mother's jargon. If 'cook more often at home', 'fast food is bad food', and 'read food labels' is the kind of help you're looking for, then go ahead and blow your 10 bucks. If you're looking for more in-depth programs for a healthy eating lifestyle, choose something else.

Not much value for the price. I like the content and the format, but I don't feel it's not worth $9.99. There is a LOT of whitespace. Many of the rules don't even have explanations; just a period indicating no explanation is required. I'd give it 5 stars if the price was $3.99 or less.
