Cannery Row by John Steinbeck Book Summary

Steinbeck's tough yet charming portrait of people on the margins of society, dependant on one another for both physical and emotional survival

Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, including longtime friend Ed Ricketts, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Dora, Mack and his boys, Lee Chong, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works. In her introduction, Susan Shillinglaw shows how the novel expresses, both in style and theme, much that is essentially Steinbeck: “scientific detachment, empathy toward the lonely and depressed…and, at the darkest level…the terror of isolation and nothingness.”

GREAT WRITE BY STEINBECK. This book is funny and shows a few great book personalities. I was lauhing out loud. Enjoy the classics, you cannot go wrong with them.

Cannery Row. John Steinbeck paints a beautiful picture of a place and people obviously dear to him. I've walked cannery row more times than I can count, stayed in Pacific Grove when the Monarchs rested high in the trees, strolled up Carmel hill, and stared at the cement remains of Doc's holding ponds. If you've been to canner Row, you'll want to go back, and if you've never been- hurry, so you can capture one of the most beautiful stretches if coastline in America,

Great book. I first read this when I was probably 13 years old. I still have fond memories of it. Nice characters. Just plain enjoyable. It is probably my favorite after Of Mice and Men, East of Eden and somewhere right there with sweet Thursday. Read this book if you like Steinbeck.

Monterey Bay. I grew up 30 minutes from Cannery Row. This book filled my imagination with what is was like when it was a working fishery and not a tourist attraction. Steinbeck's detail on the location and characters was amazing! I'll be buying the rest of his writings.

Great read. I really enjoyed this book. Was sad to see it end. Great character development and area history. I've recommended it to others who've also really enjoyed it.

Cannery Row. One of the best!

Waste of money. I tried to download this book and it crashed. I have the book on iBooks, but can't open it. I tried to report the problem, but can't access that either. $9.99 down the drain

Great book. To when it rains: you got the sample of this book. You have to pay for it in order to get the complete book. This book did not deserve a one star rating from you. Just sayin.

Cannery row. The author paints a perfect picture of the era and you almost feel like you’re right there with the characters of the book. I enjoyed the book so much I actually took a trip to California and toured his museum where characters from the book are displayed. In my opinion a must read and can enjoy over and over

Canery Row. Steinbeck is a master of character development. Absolutely lovable characters (even the gopher)!

Cannery row. This boom is so freaking boring

cannery Row. If one enjoys this book, one should read Sweet Thursday the sequel. Also one should read The log from the sea of Cortez And also Between Pacific Tides. if one really wants to know more about Ed Ricketts (Doc) one should look for The Outer Shores. Published by Mad River Press two books of Ed's papers. The above books would make a very interesting lit course.

Cannery Row. When reading about the lives of people on the margins of society I normally experience fascination, compassion, and some degree of empathy. Not so with this book. I believe that is because the characters were thinly drawn. We were just not told very much about them. The story line seemed shallow and underdeveloped as well, with the book approximating a collection of vignettes more than a wholistic novel. Steinbeck is a celebrated author but this book was a big disappointment to me. I almost stopped reading half way through, but I find it difficult to leave a book unfinished.

Cannery Row 2014. Yes the impact on the lives of countless people who visit Cannery Row and stop by Doc Ricketts office and lab. They say a polite hello and continue on the The Monterrey Aquarium where the dreams of Doc have come true.

I Want to Find Cannery Row!. Such a beautiful book. Is there any character that is not likable in this story? So rich is Steinback's language. Truly one of the great writers of the 20th century!

Community Ecology. Steinbeck in his introductory chapter speak of marine organisms so delicate they must crawl onto the page themselves. Here is coastal California community rendered as an ecological whole, each character dependent on the others, and Doc, the "set apart" scientist who tries to comprehend the whole. Cannery Row is a uniquely-realized ecological novel that has rewarded many readings over the decades, and has had profound influence on myself as an individual.
