The Summer of Naked Swim Parties by Jessica Anya Blau Book Summary

Fourteen-year-old Jamie will never forget the summer of 1976. It's the summer when she has her first boyfriend, cute surfer Flip Jenkins; it's the summer when her two best friends get serious about sex, cigarettes, and tanning; it's the summer when her parents throw, yes, naked swim parties, leaving Jamie flushed with embarrassment. And it's the summer that forever changes the way Jamie sees the things that matter: family, friendship, love, and herself.

Surprisingly so good. I've been mainly hunting the $.99 section in iBooks and on my kindle. I've read a few silly books, but this book really got me. Not in a cry and break my heart way like the time traveler's wife, but in a relatable way. I also grew up in Santa Barbara so all of the beaches meant something to me, I'm so curious if they really were the same in the 70's. Butterfly beach was where I met my first summer beach boyfriend(now a well known model), east beach was where the tourists went. Parents really were that relaxed and then some weren't. You like Jamie more and more as she discovers what life is really about. Her whole awakening is captivating. How she learns about jealousy an sexuality is so spot on. I'd recommend this book.

Not worth .99 cents. Not worth the money. Removed it from my iPhone library.

Expected more. For $0.99 I can't really complain too much about the content of this book, but when advertised as a coming of age teenage story I definitely expected more drama and problems. While I think we can all relate to this story, we can relate a little too much. It doesn't really open our eyes to new situations or issues that teenagers face, it's just generic and predictable. While it kept me interested enough to read it through (mostly because I spent money on it), growing up today as opposed to the '70's is waaayyyy harder (I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and am 22) and this makes me wonder how much worse it will get in the future. For a buck I give it 2 stars.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!. This book went so fast I wished it were twice as long. I agree with the San Francisco Chronicle that it's one of the Best Books of the Year. I laughed out oud and I almost cried. It definitely shows the time and place. What a trip it would be to grow up in Southern California--totally crazy but so much fun.

Takes me back. This book is worth more than the $0.99 I spent on it. I really enjoyed reading this book, it took me back to junior high...working so hard to impress others while staying true to yourself and the bond there is with a ridiculous but loving family.

Book. Good book, but it has errors and spelling mistakes.

Bad ending. I bought the book for $.99 so my expectations were low. To my surprise the book kept my interest and I couldn't wait to read what was going to happen next. However, the ending was terrible! I hate books that don't close the story.

Summer of Naked Pool Parties. After early success, Jamie's life takes a morbid turn and it's all down hill from there. Not realistic or uplifting. Not a fun read.

Loved it!. I devoured this ‘coming of age’ book, loved it. It is about 1 very big summer where a young teen grows up all in one summer; characters will stay with you.

Quite dull and stale. If you want to read a book that is worth for what you pay for (.99 cents) and are okay with not really getting anywhere but having a nice, easy read, then this is the one.

NeverABook!. I'm in high school, usually never reads books and spends time with my friends always. This was the one thing I couldn't put down!! I love this book I was so sad that I finished it so fast, I recommended it to all of my friends here, I'm trying to find one like it so I can continue reading now, really, worth it. Buy it! (half way reading it, had a horrible break up, this helped me ALOT.)

Great book!. I loved this book! I am 16 and think others my age and even older would like it.. emotional at times and funny at others, totally a great buy!

Brilliant!. Loved this book. I can't wait to see the movie. Please tell me there will be a movie!

Great and cheap too!!. What a fun read. I liked it and enjoyed the characters!!

Pretty good for a book hater. I hate reading, and I hate books. However, I got this and LOVED IT. Being in the same age group as the main character, I could feel some of the emotions she portrayed in the highs and lows of this story. Although it kept me reading, I didn't really like the way it abruptly ended. I feel there should be a sequel or an epilogue or something.

Like hearing a Favorite Song!. Reading this book was like hearing an old song on the radio. I grew up in the 70's in Southern California and remember the days of sunbathing, OP shorts, surfer dudes and grunion hunting. Blau's portrait of adolescence in the 70's rang true for me and put a smile on my face. Her protagonist, Jamie, grapples with a lovable but dysfunctional family with no boundaries and not a clue as to the inner life of their children. Despite all this, Jamie manages to navigate fist love, first sex, a difficult sister, and the perils of teen friendship. It's a light, humorous read but one that is worthwhile. A great book for the beach or vacation.
