Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain Book Summary

Medium Raw marks the return of the inimitable Anthony Bourdain, author of the blockbuster bestseller Kitchen Confidential and three-time Emmy Award-nominated host of No Reservations on TV’s Travel Channel. Bourdain calls his book, “A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook,” and he is at his entertaining best as he takes aim at some of the biggest names in the foodie world, including David Chang, Alice Waters, the Top Chef winners and losers, and many more. If Hunter S. Thompson had written a book about the restaurant business, it could have been Medium Raw.

Tony Medium Rare. Mellowed, stabler, thicker at the waist Tony than he was as the author of No Reservations, yet still criminal enough to describe the satisfying crunch bird bones make in the mouth, even pornier when it's endangered ortolan smuggled from France.

What you'd expect from Bourdain. Filled with alcohol, drugs, f*bombs, and hilarious stories of other chefs, his book is nevertheless insightful and advocates some interesting positions on vegetarianism, organics, and communism. What an interesting life he has led, leads, and would like to lead! An easy read.

Welcome Aboard. Fantastic entertainment. Layers and layers of what some might consider foul smelling leftovers, but with a purists heart, Tony B takes you to a place where your both your brain and soul are touched by his hard-hitting but well considered and honest it's all on the wall buffet of culinary delights...and maybe I'll think about my food and enjoy it a bit more next time I have the pleasure of eating for a great chef

Bringing back memories. I enjoyed this style of writing great flashbacks for me of restaurant realities that I experienced while being in the business for many years and working in a restaurant from the age of 13. Tony has a way of making it seem like it is happening as we are reading it. I feel like I did not miss a thing from that night ! Great dad...... the Fillmore east, man what a scene that place was. How about the Ratners next door... had many potato blintzes in that place at 6 in the morning with my eyes on the floor Thanks Tony ..... Keep it coming

Medium Raw. What else can I say!?!? Absolutely the best, most relatable, book I've ever read..in my life. Period. I could go on and on about how much of an amazing ubiquitous life that must have been and how fascinated I am by it! All I would like to say is, Thank You Mr Boudain for sharing it.

As always, an excellent book. As a culinary student I take a special pleasure reading about the restaurant industry and Bourdain does an excellent job describing all the B.S. I'm sure to encounter in the upcoming years. Admittedly I preferred Kitchen Confidential over this current book but in no way does that mean this wasn't an excellent read.

Armont. I heard the news while on a train. I finish this book—agian on a train, in bitter silence.

Terrrrific. Enjoyed reading yet another of Anthony Bourdain’s books. Easy and fun reading in his own words. F’n good reads.

Fitting Sequel to Kitchen Confidential. Bourdain's style, frankness and wit bring a strong dose of realism and humanity to an industry whose TV image portrays neither. The book flows as a collection of loosely strung essays, it's chapters bouncing from one anecdote to the next. But Bourdain skillfully pulls it all together - as a skilled chef would create gastronomic artistry from a stock of disparate ingredients.

Medium Raw. I love his show but found the book boorishly boring. The first chapter was interesting then it was all downhill from there.

medium Raw. I laughed out loud at Sandra Lee story. Priceless. Some of it is definitely raw, but VERY entertaining.

Great sequel. After reading kitchen confidential almost four years ago and liking it quite a bit I decided to venture into what I thought was Bourdain's second novel. This book is what I think should have been called kitchen commentary. It is a great sequel to his first hit book kitchen confidential. Tony gives an excellent commentary on both his life after writing the book and general food world commentary. Some of it you really have to be plugged in to the food world to understand and enjoy, and other pieces are more applicable to everyone. This is a book that must be read now because in a few years many of the comments he made will either be irrelevant or made irrelevant due to the ever changing food world. Take this opportunity to blaze through this quick read, it might do for some as the omnivores dilemma did for others. But obviously in a very different way.

Wow. What a great book.... I wish they would make Kitchen Confidential available now....

Ornery as ever... He tells it like it is %^)

So worth the read. Since kitchen confidential, this is great follow up. I hope Bourdaine continues to write about the adventures of the kitchen. It has pushed me to chronicle my own life as a "cook in the basement".

Entertaining though at times misguided.. I enjoy Tony's writing style and reading the book is like hearing him tell the stories. If you like his TV show and his twisted but cool demeanor, them you will like this book. I did not enjoy the vulgar language or the teen-aged minded sexual references and find this portion of his repertoire misguided. I do like his no holds barred opinions and find these refreshing.

Bourdian Back to Entertain. Anthony Bourdain is back with another winner. This book provides much more insight in to his private light and struggles to survey. His self doubts and reasons for not "selling" out by coming out with a line of Bourdain inspired cookware. His story is not only fascinating but contains further insight in to food why we love it and how important great food, even if it's as simple as a bowl of Pho is to the World's culture.

Greatness. The chapter on Justo is pure joy.

A variety of hot takes on many issues. Some great chapters (the fish butcher at Le Bernardin) and some lesser chapters (tirade against vegetarians). Always delivered in the snarky, vibrant style we’ve all come to love and expect. Miss him.

Medium Raw. Although uneven and at times dis-jointed,Bourdain delivers another great read. A few chapters actually border on literary greatness. He is the needed balance to the manipulative food media.

Worth every penny. Funny, sentimental, smart, educational, but it...

Perfect. The perfect followup to kitchen confidential.

What a talent. Not only could he cook, but his writing is more coherent, slyly hilarious and brutally honest than anyone I’ve read in years. RIP Mr. Bourdain…the culinary and literary worlds will never be the same.

Great Followup to Confidential. Bourdain, with short stories, anecdotes, and rants well similar in style to Kitchen Confidential, updates his thoughts on the food and restaurant scene for this millenium. His brutal honesty never fails to disappoint, but the book takes a slightly sad tone as Bourdain's thoughts begin to have more gray. Still, if you liked his other books and essays on food, this does not disappoint.

Terrific. The chapter on Justo the fish guy was the high point for me. If you've ever worked in a restaurant kitchen you'll get it. Tons of funny and smartass insight throughout the book. A real keeper.

Bourdain at his best.. I am a huge fan of Tonys books and shows. My review may be bias but I had to say that his book is great for any chefs, cooks, goodies. Bravo Tony and a great read!

Tony does it again!. Anthony Bourdain appeals to both kinds of people in the world; chefs and those who want to be chefs. Once again he has given the reader a look into the underbelly of restaurant society. I have read all of Tony's books, from the fiction to his cook books, and have been fortunate enough to dine at his former restaurant Les Halles. His writing style makes for a fun read, even in between dupes on a slow weeknight. For all of you that know him just from tv, make sure you pick up " Bobby Gold stories" and "Typhoid Mary", you will not be disappointed! Thanks again Tony!

You'll gobble it up!. I've just read this book in 2 sitting. I hate to admit it but yes. I gobbled. And yes, I'm still digesting but I know I'll want to come back tomorrow and for days after just the same. And sit down and savor and experience it again like with all Bourdain's writing, This book is a gem. Now excuse me. I need to go cook something.

Medium Raw. Love it love it! Love Anthony... And of course his charming and witty words...

Don't waste your money !. An obnoxious, self serving and hateful book. Eat your own vile words Tony.

Will Not Disappoint.. The closest I've ever strayed to being a cook is preparing various mutations of eggs and omlettes for my young family on weekend mornings. So having a background in the industry is not a prerequisite for enjoying this book. Tony's writing style is well played, educated and always seasoned with his dry sense of humor which I thoroughly enjoy. His show ’No Reservations' and his books continue to inspire me to try restaurants and dishes off the beaten path.

Loved it!. I loved this book, in fact I am rereading kitchen confidential just to refresh my memory on how Anthony got into the food biz. Great read to start the summer.
