The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head by Dr. Gary Small & Gigi Vorgan Book Summary

“Stories of human behavior at its most extreme….With humor, compassion, empathy, and insight, Small searches for and finds the humanity that lies hidden under even the most bizarre symptoms.”
—Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

A psychiatrist’s stories of his most bizarre cases, The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head by Gary Small, M.D., and Gigi Vorgan—co-authors of The Memory Bible—offers a fascinating and highly entertaining look into the peculiarities of the human mind. In the vein of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Awakenings, and the other bestselling works of Oliver Sacks, The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head surprises, enthralls, and illuminates as it focuses on medical mysteries that would stump and amaze the brilliant brains on House, M.D.

Great!. Great book great stories easy and fun to read! Shared it with all my friends and they all loved it!

Interesting!. Great read, funny, educational, and insightful.

Good, but.... This was a great book and an engaging read, but tended to lean towards the older terminology and thinking about mental disorders, which have been changed and revised for a reason. Many situations were interesting and unique, and it was cool to learn some new terminology, even if, for the majority of the time, I already knew the diagnostic materials. My two complaints with this book (that are really one, interrelated issue) is this doctors treatment and perception of borderline personality disorder, which seems off by about 20 years or so. He mentions seeing a borderline patient and regards it as frightening and unusual, even though we now know that borderline is the most common of the personality disorders. Furthermore, he later diagnoses a client with an addiction problem, who hops from addiction to addiction, whose problem is very clearly an underlying borderline personality which he fails to diagnose, mention or even consider as a possibility, which makes me a bit skeptical of his expertise in the area of personality disorders. To back up with claim, the patient had a history of rocky relationships, frequently engaged in impulsive and self-damaging behavior, was prone to bouts of feeling empty and bored, frequently found herself in relationships with narcissists, grew up in an invalidating environment, experienced a significant loss early in childhood and was prone to bouts of rage and moodiness. The only reason I could speculate that he looked over this disorder for differential diagnosis is the fact that she was high functioning, and the old ways of thinking tell us that borderlines are not high functioning individuals, which of course is both true and untrue depending on that particular person. Aside from that I found this a very interesting and engaging read as an aspiring psychologist and would recommend this book to any with a passion for psychology (and not hypochondria, haha).

The Naked Lady Who Stood On Her Head. I loved this book. I worked in the mental health field for many years and could relate to the vignettes in this book. Anyone interested in mental health would enjoy this book.
