The Unsuspecting Mage: The Morcyth Saga Book One by Brian S. Pratt Book Summary

“Want to be a mage? Then do we have the job for you…”

Sounds great for a veteran role-player. When on-the-job training entails battling demons, learning magic through trial and error, and living in a world without toilet paper, things could get rough. But to be dropped in the middle of a forest and having to do it on your own with no instruction…welcome to James’ world.

It all gets started when his grandfather suggests to James, a young man on the verge of graduating high school, that he check out the following advertisement for a job.
“Magic! Real Magic! Ever wanted to learn? We require someone with intelligence and a disciplined mind. Those well versed in fantasy novels and role playing games a plus. May need to travel.”

Sounded like the perfect job for a veteran role-player and avid fantasy reader. James had no idea he’d be whisked to another world, completely cut off from friends and family. Arriving in a meadow in the middle of a forest, he’s greeted by a creature not entirely human. He was then told three things:

Magic works here…
Don’t try to go home…
Get to the village of Trendle…

Then the creature vanished.

Which way was Trendle? Where was he? What might inhabit the forest that will seek his ruination? These were but a few of the questions needing to be unraveled.

Alone with only his wits and knowledge gleaned from hundreds of books and dungeon campaigns, he started out just trying to survive. He soon learned that one mistake, one lapse in judgment could mean his death.

Not long after arriving, he made the acquaintance of Miko, a street-wise kid who quickly became his friend and companion. Little did he know that the strength within this child from the streets of Bearn, a strength that would be tested again and again as they waded through battle after battle, delved in hidden passages deep beneath the earth, and faced off against an the might of an Empire, would be invaluable in the trials ahead.

The Unsuspecting Mage is the first book of The Morcyth Saga, a seven book epic fantasy adventure. It follows James as he seeks first to master the art of magic then to uncover the reason why he had been brought to this strange new world where armies are on the move and gods meddle in the affairs of men.

could only stand reading it for 3 chapters. Great ideas, interesting characters, but desperately needs writing skills. Hopefully he will improve with practice, but even my eigth grader has better writing skills.

Still Amazing. I read the first 3 books from my local library back in 2017 but sadly my library didn’t have the rest. So recently I decided to reread them from the first book to the last and it is still as amazing reading the first book again as I did the first time. I highly recommend this book.

Tenses. Most books are written in the past tense ("our hero walked through the market"). This one writes in present tense ("James walks through the market"). Takes some getting used to, but the story is still reasonable. The motivation of the characters is logical, although having played DnD for years, the magic is less consistent than what I would have expected for a story such as this. This is somewhat explainable by James' age, but the author doesn't develop the character quite enough. Nonetheless, I purchased the second book, hoping to see deeper development.

Love the book and series. I've looked through hundreds of pages on the free section for a good fictional novel. For the most part I was not so impress with the selections, but this one story about James changed everything around. I feel in love with James and everyone in the series. It got me hook after the first few chapters. I love the flow of the story and the fact that every scene was visible to me. James wasn't the only one to transported to a different, magical world. I was too and I am more than willing to venture this path again.

Easy free read. Quick easy read.

Fun fantasy adventure, just needs a bit of polish. I enjoyed this free read. The world building is interesting and I love the sense of discovery and adventure. I really feel like this book would benefit from a good editor or agent, and tgat final layer of polish. The present tense it is written in makes it harder to read than it needs to be, and there are a few copy mistakes that need to be addressed. (jambed pact should be jam packed, ect) Overall, I did enjoy this, and just bought book two to see what happens to James and Miko next.

The Unsuspecting Reader. This book has an interesting storyline. The idea that forms the basis for the story is very imaginative, but it is written in a 6th or 7th grade reading level. The sentence structure is short and clipped and sometimes too predictable. The hero goes from being an unsure teenager to a wise Mage in too short a time. When the story opens our hero is living at home in one world, not knowing what to do with his life. In just a few short chapters he is suddenly cast into another world as a successful magician offering scholarly advice to his sidekick.

.. Very engaging story and characters. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Loved it!!. Excellent book! One of my new favorites!

Great book. This story has a really interesting plot that keeps readers on their toes. While there are some grammatical issues, I think they can be overlooked enough to keep reading this story. The author has many good ideas and I look forward to reading the next story.

Tedious. I read through the whole book gritting my teeth on every page. The author would make more money by charging for this first book so that a few people might take a chance. This free book ensured that I will not buy other books by this author. Written in a very unemotional present tense, with flat, trite characters and blatant mistakes in grammar, spelling, and heterograph confusion. Liberally sprinkles a run-on "good sir" at the end of dialogue to add that imagined medieval flair. It's as if a technical writer were hired by a Renaissance faire to hammer together this boilerplate atrocity.

Awesome. I have finished reading the first book and am hoping to get all of the series

This began my love of a genera.. To start with some context I’m writing this review years down the line from reading this book. When I first picked this up it was just a convenient free book that I figured I’d give a shot. While the grammar and writing style were rough at times and the story as a whole throughout the series had its flaws, I cherish this book as it set me down a path seeking more like it. Don’t mistake my criticism for hate though. The story, concept, and world were so captivating to me that years later I still remember the enjoyment I got out of reading this series. It felt so unique. That uniqueness lead me to attempt to find more books like it and eventually that led me to the LitRPG genera. This one book unlocked a whole new wealth of content for me to explore and I will be forever grateful for that.

Really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed this book , I love the characters and it was addictive story for me, I'm on book 6 and can't wait to see how this story ends.

A good read. As a fantasy game player, this book offers a lot. Spellcasting, sword wielding, mystery and chaos. 4 stars because it starts off a little...awkward. Get past the first few chapters, an you'll be in for a treat.

The Unsuspecting Mage: Book One. It definitely popcorn time once more. Reading this story as it unfolds from one great adventure to another will have you looking at the remaining pages and wishing there were a lot more left. KSW

Amazing. After reading the whole series I felt compelled to write a review because the story was absolutely amazing. There are numerous grammar errors that cause hiccups in the flow of your read, however I feel that it wasn't enough to ruin it. It's obvious to me the author is a D&D lover, and other D&D fans will most likely love this story. I notice that a lot of reviews claim the book has no ending and I fear they made that comment without realizing that this is a multi book series. There is a ton of action and a lot of dungeon crawling, and as a D&D fan, I feel it's a very good thing. The perspective that the story is written from can be a bit confusing at times and I did feel a need to reread sections to figure out who is actually saying the dialog. The perspective while a hinderance in dialog allowed a very interesting look into the minds of the characters. The only issue I felt was bad to the story is how the main character would always find out the info/item at just the right time to win, while needed for the story to continue, happened so often it had me waiting for the "coincidental situation" that I knew would happen, to happen. I feel the above is do to the authors skill, and while he is definitely not among the greatest I've read (like Robert Jordan and Raymond E. Fiest) I do feel he is a very talented writer and I am eagerly awaiting the books in development for the series that continues the adventures of James. 5 stars easily, and highly recommended.

Interesting cross pollination with rpg. It's a little strange reading because it's written in the present tense, third person. I'd call it Young adult fiction. Fast paced quick read.

Blargh. Unacceptable

Hmm.... Hard to read due to typos and grammatical errors. Word choice is a little bit like little kid words, not many extravagant words:) otherwise, it,s ok book.

Yes!!!. This book and the series as a whole (The Morcyth Saga) is my all-time favorite book series. The books are fast-paced and you never know what's going to happen next! I fell in love with the characters (especially James) and by the end of the saga you'll love it too. PS: apparently it's been updated to be fully written in past tense since that bothered so many people haha.

Good story but.......... Ok I really like the foundation of the story, but the step by step role playing language gets old quick. There's many parts that could be chopped out and honestly there is no climax and end to the book. It stops in a awkward spot. With a re-write it could be a great book.

Fubar. This book and one other were ok before the update. Now the table of contents are messed up and full of self promo junk.

Good, but.... It's very hard to read a book this long written in present tense. I sincerely hope this author has changed to the traditional past tense for the other books listed here. I would love to re-read this book written in the proper tense.

Wow!. Do not believe the negative reviews! This a very good adventure book for young and adult readers. Don't be so critical of the one or two missed printed errors. Enjoy the journey and allow the author to entertain you with his story. Good job author!

Good read. I really liked this book. And am happy to be starting the second one. I would recommend to anyone who likes fantasy books with this kind of material. Magic, warriors, adventure and odd or surprise friendships are my cup of tea. Enjoy..

This whole series is great. I loved every aspect of this series. Best on I have read in a very long time.

Fun ride that ultimately leads nowhere. I have to agree with other reviewers. The first person present tense narrative style is awkward, and it reads like something a 5th grader might write. That being said, it is still an entertaining read, but the story never goes anywhere and it ends without any sort of resolution.

The Unsuspecting Mage. The writing style is reminiscent of L. E. Modes sit Jr. but with some unexpected twists. I can' wait to read the next book.

.... This was freaking a great book. All of these people complaining of grammatical errors have no right to complain, just look at their reviews and they typed them. This is a great start to a great series.

Dungeons and Dragons. This is simply a D'n'D scenario. Shows the author has promise, but this novel does him no favor since it is likely to discourage people from reading more of his work..

Great story line. The book has a great story line and mighty characters. The only downside to the book is the occasional misspelled word which I have learned to ignore, this is because I write the same way too.

Worth the read. I love the story it's pretty intense ounce you go further but the story is magic

Roll the die, move the plot along.. This is written poorly, so poorly that you can't suspend disbelief long enough to enjoy the story. You can almost see the author rolling the die & consulting a random table & the boy scout handbook to move the plot along. The next draft should focus on character development. With more work this could become a good story.

Amazing book. Truly a great book, I have only read around 150 or so pages and I am already completely hooked on it, there are some grammatical errors but it does not affect the book experience. I will definitely read the rest of this book and the others of the series.

Great read. This has to be an all time favorite book. It makes you use your imagination a little.

Might be good, but.... ...I found it impossible to read past the frequent Christian references. Maybe it gets better, and I do own it, so I might read it someday...but for now I regret paying for it.

Not a bad story.... But the writing is terrible! It is truly a chore to slog through the misspellings, grammar errors and just plain klutzy word choices. I would flunk a third grader for writing like this.

Engaging Story, but needs polish. After starting, I wanted to know how it would end. It kept me entertained and only briefly annoyed by spelling and grammatical errors. It would serve the author well to pay a top notch editor, as the story was engaging, but I found the writing too wordy and sometimes juvenile. You could literally skip pages of pointless details, such as the lead character taking two rights and a left then ducking into an alley before making it the middle of town where he took another two lefts before finding the hotel and opening the door.

The whole series!. Addicting and amazing! Couldn't wait to read the next book!

Don't be fooled.. This book is very poorly written, I have no clue how the book got so many good reviews but it is not worth even downloading for free. The characters have absolutely no depth and the story is just ripped off from a wide selection of actual good books. Not worth the time or space.

Amazing read. This book was an amazing read from start to finish. I am now starting the second one.

Loved It!. This has been the most compelling book I have read in a long time. I couldn't put it down. Now I love Steven King's books and even though this book is not scary, I rate it up there even with Steven King. I can't wait to read the 2nd book by Brian S Pratt and his other books as well.

The Mycorth Sagas. These books are so fast moving and exciting I spent six bucks a book and still waiting on the second series. Enough said!

Great story. Loved it

Great Book Series. I could tell that it was written by someone with little or no experience writing. That being said, I enjoyed the story and the characters. I also liked the fact that there was action in every chapter it seemed. I noticed that there wasn't a lot of detail, but on the same note I'm not sure that the lack of detail is a bad thing. I have read the entire series and can honestly say that the stories and the writing get better with each book. Keep up the good work.

Good read. Entertaining and an easy read.

Great book and series!. I'm already reading the series for the second time. If you read this book or series looking for errors, then you will find some. If you read this book with you imagination running at full speed, then the only mistakes you will find are the ones James, Miko or any other character made in the story. Read it for the story and not to point out the errors, and enjoy it!

Poor. Okay story line, slightly repetitive though. The use of present tense is unneeded and make it tedious to read.

Bloody brilliant. I absolutely loved this book! Fantasy is my forte and this writer will go far. Although he will need to sort out his grammar issues first, hence only four stars.

Bad writing. Written all in present tense makes it difficult to read.

Wouldnt mind a friend like James. Fantastic. On to the fourth book already. A bit repeditive with fight scenes but still value for money

Not bad. Not bad to say it is based on a role playing scenario - but it does mean the characters lack a little depth and agency. The end was spoilt a little bit by the characters forgetting to look behind them. Hopefully they will learn!

Mr. As soon as I read this book, there was no way I was stopping there, gripped wasn't a strong enough word, I have read this saga twice and am currently waiting on the third instalment of the sequel saga 'Travail of the Dark Mage', I am guaranteed to read them again. Well done Brian, my favourite series of books out there, a definate must must must read.

Amazing!!. Not being a fantasy fan I normally wouldn't go for a book like this. As it was free I thought I'd give it a go. I was so gripped by the end of this book I went on to buy all six remaining books. These books are suitable for all ages, both boys and girls. An excellent writer with a wonderful imagination. I can not rave about these books enough. Definitely give them a go.

Absolutely Astounding!. I found this book in my iBooks library and must have left it there for God knows how many months. SO GLAD I READ IT. Fans of RPG, Lord of The Rings and any such adventurous fantasy book would love this book! The whole 'middle-earth' era, combined with magic, a quest which leads one young man on a journey with surprises along the way and friendships and losses throughout... this book is a roller coaster of adventure and has you hooked within the first few chapters. Strongly, strongly, STRONGLY recommend! I even bought every other series of books by Brian. S Pratt! One of the best series I've ever read, coming at top with Eragon & it's sequels and LOTR. This author should be better known, truly a remarkable man.

wow just wow. free hmmm worth a try i thought. now downloading second book :D

Graphics Designer. I am a 16 year old boy, I downloaded this book as it was free. Instantly I had to buy all of the books following this one. It has set my imagination on fire. So I thank you brian! I recommend to people to BUY these books!

Poor. This series desperately needs a good editor! The use of the present tense is unnecessary, particularly as the author mixes present and past tense inconsistently and incorrectly. The number of spelling and grammar mistakes makes this hard work to read, as you have to read each sentence several times to work out what is actually being said. That being said, the story is interesting, if slightly contrived.

FANTASTIC! (soz for spelling if wrong). it was fantastic. I loved every moment of it. Couldn't put it down and i highly recomend it!!

Fantastic. I got the first book because it was free and went on to read the whole series, definitely a few issues with grammar etc but to say this is self published it makes a great read. As soon as I finished one I had to begin the next. Now onto the second series and I can't wait to read it.

Superb. Got this book on the off chance really glad I did definitely going to buy the others superb

Mrs. I thought I would try this book as it was free, what I hadn't released is how wonderful it was going to be! Once I picked this up, I could not put it down. I think it is a brilliant book!

Best/better than Harry potter. This series had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! The end also doesn't disappoint! My hats off to you, one of the greatest books ever read!

Strangely Compelling. While the language in this book is simple to the extreme the story is strangely compelling. It is kind of like reading a fantansy adventure game and you just want to roll a dice to see what happens. An ok read if you just want a very simple and mind emptying story.

The Unseuspecting mage. Loved the story, on par with Terry brooks as i love the Shannara series. This keeps you wanting to read more to find out what happens to the characters. The plot is excellent and the execution is brilliant. Will get the rest in the series!!!!

Family time. Great family read

Disappointing. It's very sad to see so much effort go into putting a story down on paper without taking the time to learn the basics of what story telling is about. The story reads like a computer game story.

A good read. A good read, with an interesting plot line. Quite engrossing!

Great. The plot was fantastic I kept wanting more and more bring on morcyth saga book 2.

Decent. Good story, but needs to be edited.

Amazing. Great book

Entertaining read. I found this book in the free section of this app.,so I wasn't expecting a terribly good read. However I was pleasantly surprised when I found I just couldn't put it down. There's a decent story and well defined characters. The magic system in the book seems more believable than from other novels I've read, for example:James must be wary not to over exert himself, else he passes out. The only problem I had while reading was the way it was written,it seemed like there was almost too much information, however I still feel this novel deserves five stars. This was a good book and I would recommend it to any who like fantasy novels.

Miss.. Not so great. Juvenile writing style is too distracting.

Great book!. I really enjoyed this book. It has great characters and a great story line. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read the next one!
