A Grave Denied by Dana Stabenow Book Summary

A talented writer at the prime of her abilities, Stabenow delivers a masterful crime novel in A Grave Denied that turns out to be as much about living as it is about dying.

Everyone knew Len Dreyer, a handyman for hire in the Park near Niniltna, Alaska, but no one knew anything else about him. Even Kate Shugak hired him to thin the trees on her 160-acre homestead and was planning to ask him to help build a small second cabin on her property for Johnny Morgan, a teenaged boy in her care. But she, the Park's unofficial p.i., seems to have known less about him than anyone.

Alaska is a place where anybody can bury his history and start fresh, and for any reason, but this particular mystery comes to light when Len Dreyer turns up murdered. His body is discovered, frozen solid, in the path of a receding glacier with the hole from a shotgun blast in his chest. No one even knew he was missing, but it turns out he's been missing for months.

Alaska State Trooper Jim Chopin asks Kate to help him dig into Dreyer's background, in the hope of finding some reason for his murder. She takes the case, mindful of the need for gainful employment as she copes with her responsibility for Johnny, a constant reminder of his father, her dead lover. Little does she imagine that by trying to provide for him she just might put him right in the path of danger.

Another great Kate Shugak novel. Another satisfying Kate Shugak novel. Always enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested and off-guard; mixed with rich characters and plenty of wit....a great feel-good recipe especially while I was recovering from the flu!

Another amazing read!. The bad guy is never who you think he is; Kate and Jim are building into a great story on their own. Kate is now a Mom and ran Jane out is the state, I hope. The family of friends expands with each new novel. Thank goodness I get these as eBooks ; I carry a library in my pocket, I can read any time I feel like it. Every one of Dana's book are nearly impossible to put down and always look forward to the next.

A Grave Denied. My first book from the Kate Shugak series. It got better and better with each turn of the page.

A Grave Denied. Mesmerizing, could not put it down, read for 4 days straight. Another great Kate Shugak adventure!

A Grave Denied. After reading my seventh book in this series I was really hit hard by the way the Park got together and built Kate a new home. I got a few tears in my eyes. Human tragedy and pain mixed with human kindness. Reminds me of John Steinbeck in the Grapes of Wrath.

This AK Girl is Addicted to Stabenow. I love reading Dana's books. I grew up in remote Alaska. I forgot things like keeping my boom box and cassette tapes in a blazo box. Even crazier our cabin burned down when i was fifteen and home alone taking care of it while my folks were Anchorage doing a 100 hour on our pacer. But she reminded me of those fun memories growing up in rural AK too. Riding to school on a three wheeler packing a 30.06 for bear protection. Sleeping out in kid made spruce bow shelters just for fun. She combines Alaskans quirkiness with beauty and intrigue that keeps you turning pages. She writes a true Alaskan picture with enough fiction to keep you entertained and lost in Kates world. It makes me want to write my stories of growing up in Lake Clark. She inspires me. Hopefully someday I can meet her.
