Old Man's War by John Scalzi Book Summary

Perfect for an entry-level sci-fi reader and the ideal addition to a veteran fan’s collection, John Scalzi's Old Man’s War will take audiences on a heart-stopping adventure into the far corners of the universe.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army.

The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce-and aliens willing to fight for them are common. The universe, it turns out, is a hostile place.

So: we fight. To defend Earth (a target for our new enemies, should we let them get close enough) and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has gone on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Earth itself is a backwater. The bulk of humanity's resources are in the hands of the Colonial Defense Force, which shields the home planet from too much knowledge of the situation. What's known to everybody is that when you reach retirement age, you can join the CDF. They don't want young people; they want people who carry the knowledge and skills of decades of living. You'll be taken off Earth and never allowed to return. You'll serve your time at the front. And if you survive, you'll be given a generous homestead stake of your own, on one of our hard-won colony planets.

John Perry is taking that deal. He has only the vaguest idea what to expect. Because the actual fight, light-years from home, is far, far harder than he can imagine-and what he will become is far stranger.

Sci Fyi That you’ve got to read.. Old Man’s War is the best book I’ve read in a very long time. From the the first chapter I was drawn into the story and I didn’t put the book down until I was finished. This book is fast paced, action packed with humor and emotional content. If you consider yourself a reader, than it is imperative to read this book immediately.

Can’t finish.. Too Silly.

A Rare Type of Book - Pure Enjoyment. A friend recommended this book to me, said I’d love it. Took me just 2 days to read. A true page turner. It’s as simple as it is engaging. A universe of story unfolds effortlessly into a story you can’t put down. A story of a man long in life living life again. A story of friendship. A story of action and adventure. A story of battles, lost and won. A story of love that spans both time and space. Every page enjoyable. By the end I cared for the character, his successes and losses; and shared his hope that more was yet to come before the sun finally sets on this Old Man’s War.

Wonderful Read. Filled with great characters, a unique concept (always a big deal for me in Science Fiction), a rousing military story with love and loss ... Just a great read.

A great sci-fi novel. I really liked this book. The characters are very relatable and believable. Typical sci-fi can get a little bogged down in its own tech and history, this one suffered no such problems.

Old mans war. Great book!!!!

Best book I've read in a long time. This is probably the best book I've read in quite a while. It's so original. It's filled with action, great characters that you really come to care about, and a well crafted universe that is very easy to get lost in. I can't wait to visit again. Anyone who loves great science fiction must read this book. :)

Want to be young again after you “retire”?. The idea of “join the army, see the world” isn’t new. Even the sf addition of “meet interesting things and kill them” isn’t new. But the journey to get there and try and understand how humanity got there and where it is going is fresh and more nuanced than the golden age writers.

Quick, easy read.. cool concept.

A story for older folks. If you are a bit older and remember science fiction from the 50’s and 60’s you tend to accept this story line better than younger folks. Plus there is a certain level of identity with the older soldier concept. Good story but could have left out some of the gratuitous sex stuff. Might be good enough to read the next in the series.

Sensational. Finished the entire book in a single read, if you like sci-fi this is for you.

Whoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhoa. I heard so many good things about this book, I was more surprised to find out that there was more to it the just being good. This book has piqued my interest in sci-fi genres. Truly a fan for life. If you haven't read or experienced this fine book, then please buy a copy. You will not be disappointed.

Once You Start.... I picked up this as a paperback at a book store in Grand Central Station in NYC. Just a little something to exercise the mind. I did not expect to find such a gem. By the time you get to the action (which doesn’t take long) you’re already wondering if there’s a sequel (which there are several... including one with an interesting twist). I’d love to see this as a movie.

Would read. Good book, highly recommend reading. This book reminds me of “Forever War”, if you haven’t read “Forever War”, read it. Both this and “Forever War” are great books!

Leaves a bad taste. The basic premise is interesting, and the plot develops with a satisfying number of twists. But... Those who have served in the military will find some parts silly, and even a little insulting for Marines. The dialogue is also clunky and unnatural, especially for the female characters. But what really turned me off was the approach he takes with morality. One example is that the main character supposedly loved his wife more than anything, but reminisces that cheating made his marriage stronger. Bleh.

Overrated. Not terrible, but the glut of 5 star reviews today is insane. There is no way to adequately compare books and ratings since standards are so low everything nowadays is 5 star. The story is interesting as long as one doesn't get too involved in an actual plot. Everyone is an enemy, kill everyone and don't make an attempt to understand the science since in the future we know even less than now. I ordered the book after reading the author got a large advance on future books. I assume his books sell well, but not really my taste.

Old Man s War. Great easy read, nice action. If you liked Starship Trooper you ll love this.

Great fun to read!. Thank you for writing this.

Hooked. From start to finish. I haven’t laughed or absorbed a book in such detail in a long while.

Great book. It is defilitely one of my favorite books, really worth reading!

Mediocre. It’s just not that fun to read.

So FLIPPING good!. I finished this so quickly because it’s a great story! The humor is fantastic, the action is just right, and so is the sci-fi. Add to all of that the romance at the end and the metaphysical questions and dreams it evinces, and this story is gold. Already bought the next one. Going to read it now…

Terrific. Fresh ideas- the author is creative and kept surprising me with fascinating new scientific and moral concepts and twists. He keeps the action and momentum rolling. Integrating the scifi action with his feelings about love and friendship goes deep, and takes the book a cut above other good space adventures. And to top it all off, Scalzi has a good understanding of the emotional experience of being an infantryman. Hard to put this book down.

Great detail. It was such a good concept, from start to finish i was just fascinated and just wanted to keep reading. I would say what I liked most is the detail, the author gave a good depiction of the action and the environment. It gave me great images for this story .

Old Man's Health. Enjoyed it very much. This book and the series were a very easy read. Was awesome to pick up the book and continue reading every chance I had even a few extra minutes. Each time it was just like I hadn't had to put it down.

The 21st Century Rewrite of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. I stumbled across Scalzi when a very minor character on my favorite TV show of all time was seen reading this book. Scalzi was also a creative consultant on that show so, along with other members of that show's cast and production team, I've been following him on a Twitter list for some years now. On Twitter he is funny and interesting so when this book went on sale recently I decided to buy it here in the iBooks store. The book is well-written although the characters are mostly generic and flat; even the snarky narrator and hero isn't particularly distinctive as an individual person. The action is evenly paced between exposition disguised as dialogue. It tastes like a Heinlein novel. In fact, the entire book is basically a rewrite of Starship Troopers with cloned super-bodies taking the place of battle suits and a plethora of hostile races standing in for the bugs. This is not necessarily a bad thing but Scalzi breaks no new ground here nor are cultures or concepts explored beyond a most superficial level. I enjoyed reading this book but I don't feel motivated to read the other books in this series.

Video game in print. This felt like some playing a first person shooter game wrote down the play-by-play into book form. The dialogue was funny for awhile. But neither video games, nor this written form are for me.

Great new concepts. I love picking up a new book where new thinking has taken place. A world of tech enhanced humans was a fascinating idea. Good plot. Moved fast.

Enjoyable read. This was an enjoyable short read. A sci-tech story with enough battles to keep one engaged.

Thoroughly Enjoyed this book. Well Done!

This was an interesting read. Well now I tried this book and it worked as a great gate keeper to the new world (for me) of science fiction. Although I did go to my nearest old man and suggest the book to him. When I told him the name he wondered if he heard me correctly. So he asked me to write it down, and I gave it to him. He was polite and kindly excused me. Then I was off but then I heard a grunt and guessed that it was him finally figuring the implications. Of what he guessed I meant, then I started hearing tearing. So well this is a difficult book to give to people over sixty who would be considered "old".

A Blast. It's such a fun and engaging book, you won't put it down if you can help it. Scalzi knows what sci-fi readers want and in the tradition of Asimov and Orson Scott Card provides an abundance of adventure, strategic action, and alien environments. Any writer that can push your imagination where it's never been will have a fan for life.

Couldn't put it down. Had a few great twists, and is the type of book you're itching to tell others about each chapter, but don't want to ruin it or them! Lots of stopping for thinking, pondering implications for humanity. Great writing! Love the little things- how in a few sentences an entire outcome of part of history of earth can be established, and the implications immediately make sense as the story just moves right along.

Keeps you entertained. Scalzi isn’t breaking any new ground here, but it’s a page turner that moves quickly, makes for easy reading, and will keep you entertained. I finished quickly and enjoyed it but I would have liked a bit more character development and world building.

Old Man's War. Very good book, I usually take a week or more to read 600-700 pages. Got this done in 4 days. Good story and character development. Technical references where believable and yet not too far out there. I will continue the series mostly because I like the main character, Scalzi pulled me in, way in !

Excellent Read. From the start this book grabs hold and bring you along for a great ride. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in this genre.

Wow. Amazing novel. I could not put it down.

More than sci-fi. This is a must read book for us boomers that grew up as science and technology was born and grew. This book isn’t about shoot’em up science-fi, it’s a journey of a life that finds lost love and hope. Yep, I just wrote that. It’s entertaining, relative, and easy to immerse yourself in with sincere human moments.

Fantastic book. Great read all around. Thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

I love it. This is a great book! I couldn’t stop reading this book!

SciFi At Its Finest. A fabulous book that’s both as captivating as it is inventive. It really was a joy reading. The only disappointment for me was that I finished it so very quickly; barely five days. I heard a lot of positive things and I can say they’re only too true. If you enjoy science fiction, then this book is a must.

A roller coaster of fun and wild ideas. I read this in barely three days. It's a rip-roaring, grandiose-idea-filled, exciting read. I got it from the Humble eBook Bundle, so it was much cheaper, but you should buy this. If you like SF, if you like the future, if you like fun page-turners, buy this book. Do yourself a favor.

Wonderful. This book was such a delight to read. Out of the box writing makes you feel a part of the story.

Meh. The reviews were amazing so I read it. I considered the writing to be underwhelming. Calling this guy the next heinlein is reaching for sure.

Mil SciFi Fan. One of the best sci fi books I've read in the last several years. Heartily recommend!

Great military sci-fi. If you loved starship troopers and the forever war then you will really love this book. Interesting technology applications, sound and thoughtful science and military grit. Impressive moral and ethical thoughts a well.

Read it in 5 days. Great book.. A+

Old Man’s War. Terrific!

Great story. Great story, well thought out and engaging. Very slow to begin with but once it got going WOW! I think I've found a new series of books to read.

Nicely done SciFi Diversion. A nicely done science fiction diversion with only moments of techno babble. Principle character was credible without being superhero.

Terrific read. Scalzi's blog is great, so I thought I'd read one of his books. This was a very good decision. I read a lot, everything from SF to non fiction to crime novels, and loved that this book manages to be about interstellar war and marriage, seamlessly. I probably enjoyed Leguin more, because her heros really aren't and Scalzi's definitely is, but I enjoyed this far more than Heinlein. Read it. You will enjoy it. Highly recommended by this avid reader!

Just ok. Premise didn’t make much sense to me

Great book could not put it down.. This book has easily moved on to my favorite book list. The deployment of the main character and his journey and both fanatics, funny and thoughtful.

Instant classic. One of he best science fiction book I've ever read.

Old Man's War. Great sci-fi reading, great story. Kept the action and imagination going throughout the whole novel.

Never gets “old”. I think I must have read and reread this particular book 6 times now. Each time it remains fresh and engaging, while deepening your engagement in the characters. John Perry, Jane Sagan and Harry Wilson take on particular depth, as do the enormous implications of the key technologies the author has introduced in laying out the foundation of things to come. Really well done, and appreciable time and time again.
