The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick M. Lencioni Book Summary

The New York Times best-selling team leadership handbook for modern executives, managers, and organizations

After her first two weeks observing the problems at DecisionTech, Kathryn Petersen, its new CEO, had more than a few moments when she wondered if she should have taken the job. But Kathryn knew there was little chance she would have turned it down. After all, retirement had made her antsy, and nothing excited her more than a challenge. What she could not have known when she accepted the job, however, was just how dysfunctional her team was, and how team members would challenge her in ways that no one ever had before.

For twenty years, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team has been engaging audiences with a page-turning, realistic fable that follows the travails of Kathryn Petersen, DecisionTech’s CEO, as she faces the ultimate leadership crisis. She must unite a team in such disarray that it threatens to derail the entire company.

Equal parts leadership fable and business handbook, this definitive source on teamwork by Patrick Lencioni reveals the five behavioral tendencies that go to the heart of why even the best teams struggle. He offers a powerful model and step-by-step guide for overcoming those dysfunctions and getting every one rowing in the same direction.

Today, the lessons in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team are more relevant than ever. This special anniversary edition celebrates one of the best-selling business books of all time with a new foreword from the author that reflects on its legacy and lessons.

Enjoyable and insightful read. I am not a business professional, but anyone who gets even a quarter of the way through this book should be able to understand what a difference this book could mean to any team. Me? I'll use it for the band I work with. It can just as easily translate to a sportsteam, religios organization, or anyone who works with others in the pursuit of a vision.

Five dysfunctions of a team. Really enjoyed the straightforward examples and the simplicity of the message.

Engaging. This book was very engaging. It was hard to put down. I finished it in two nights and learned a ton about leading a team.

Well Organized. I really enjoyed the real life story in the beginning, then the follow up of the structure.

Pleasantly easy to read and helpful.. I had to read this book for work and was worried it was going to be hard to get through. I was definitely wrong. I was hooked from the beginning and finished the book quickly. It's very helpful information and I really enjoyed the style he used to explain the subject. It's worth your time.

Helpful for team-players. I enjoyed reading 5 Dysfunctions of a Team because the book begins with a story about a fictional company, which made the concepts of the book easy to understand. After reading about the fictional story the book goes through the five dysfunctions of a team, and provides anecdotes, in a way the readers can then use for themselves. This is a good book for anyone that has to work with other people in his or her job.

Wisdom nugget after wisdom nugget. This was an incredibly good, and easy, read. This book is full of pragmatic ideologies one will be able to take to their team as soon as the book is finished. I would highly recommend this book to any business leader.

Great read. As an active duty Marine, this book will help with developing a team. Marines are trained as a team and are taught to adapt and overcome. This book has just opened my eyes a bit more when it comes to encouraging conflicts for the better of the team. I recommend this book for any member of any team. Maybe this book will make the "Commandants Reading List" one day. #SemperFidelis #Gunny

Another great book! Solid!!!. Had the pleasure of meeting the author this year at Dave Ramsey's EntreLeadership Summit in Dallas last May. What a great, knowledgable author. And a nice man too. Taught me about humble, hungry and smart in building a team from his first book which they gave us at the Summit. Love his writing style. Highly recommend especially if you own a business or are running a team.

Good book. .

Great Book. After reading this book I immediately bought one for each of my staff to read and go over.

Very insightful and instructional on team building. Great read with very practical advise on building of high performing teams….

Excellent concepts for educators!. While this book’s examples take place in a corporate settings, I have found this book tremendously helpful as I endeavor to lead a small group of highly experienced Early Childhood Educators who are independently amazing teachers, but find it difficult to work as a team. I have learned a lot. I am a developing leader myself, and this provides some great insight into the dynamics of teamwork.

Love it. I was reading this book as it was recommended as a read for my Jack Welch masters program. I was also part of a new team at my company and was amazed as I read the book how it seemed as if he was describing my teams current struggles. After starting couldn’t stop reading because I was so intrigued as to how it would end… let’s say upon completion I was equipped with the tools to take back to my team for us all to utilize to become stronger together. I will be purchasing more of his books.

Practical. Important ways to increase trust, accountability and results. Easy read.

The right book at the right time.. This book was exactly what I needed to show me ways to improve our teams performance. I highly recommend this book to anyone who leads a team or is part of one.

Five Dysfunctions of a team. As a small business owner this was on point for me. I really understood the challenges depicted in this story and could relate totally.

Great book. Very engaging for an educational book. Highly recommend

Must for all leaders of teams. Reading this will highlight opportunities in your business you didn’t know you had, but even better, will give you ways to overcome those opportunities

Must read!. This book is one of the top 2 or 3 business books on my personal hit list. An amazingly easy read that has you turning pages like a best selling fiction novel, this book speaks to the core of the issues that hold companies and teams back.

Must read for any true leader. Recommended to me during the job interview and I truly enjoyed it.

Excellent Read. Loved this book! Great read. Extremely helpful and able to apply straight away.

Five dysfunctions of team, a leadership fable. The ad for the book is misleading ~ it’s only 79 pages long, not the 200 + advertised. Even the thumbnail picture deceives with page numbers in the hundreds. I would not have bought the book at this price if it had been factually correct in the brief.

The five dysfunctions of a team. This book is amazing and has great ideas for those looking to improve their team and get it to start producing once again. It teaches you some effective exercises to execute to your own team. I recommend this book! Excellent read...... And I am not a fan of reading, but it kept my attention from the start!

Awesome book and very applicable to the start-up culture. My manager recommended that all employees read this book, and I absolutely love it. It provides a clear ‘instruction manual’ type format of how to both lead and interact in any team environment. Highly recommend!
