The Colorado Kid by Stephen King Book Summary

On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There's no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues.
But that's just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...?
No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a surprising tale that explores the nature of mystery itself...

Great short story. I could not put this down. Good mystery story.

Mystery. Not sure what to think of this one. I wanted more. Seemed it just ended without finality but it will keep me wondering and thinking. That makes it a good book. As usual, the writing is excellent.

From Russia with Love. I don't often write reviews, but I was so impressed with this book I felt that I must. I had stopped reading Stephen King novels for a while as they seemed to lose a certain something. I also needed to be able to sleep at night. This book was a refreshing re-introduction to Stephen King. It is now 12:28 a.m. And I must go sleep.

Willie. Another great read by King !!!!!!!

Waste of time. I like Stephen King’s writing-usually- but ended up frustrated and disappointed. The story... first it isn’t a story, it two old men telling a story with no end. Very unsatisfactory. Only a guy like Stephen King, who sells a jillion books, could get away with this. No agent or editor would take this not-a-story and publish it.

From this they got "Haven"?. I enjoyed this story for its own sake, but for the life of me can't figure how the makers of Haven feel their show does this justice. There is no supernatural here. No "troubles". Just a mystery, and 2 veteran newsmen showing a worthy apprentice the ropes.

The Colorado Kid. This was a very interesting book. I read it only after I began watching the series "Haven" on the SciFi Channel. It was not what I expected, it was better! Stephen King just keeps on getting better as he grows as a writer. I don't think this story is for everyone. It is a challenge to us readers to accept the story as written and enjoy it for what it is...a well written tale. I simply could not put it down.

Lacks an ending.. King spends the whole book setting up a mystery and then does not solve it. Leaves you wanting in the end, in a bad way.

Makes You Think. The story is unfinished yet I still feel satisfied. That is why I read Stephen King.

Great writing. I'm glad it had no nifty ending. This may be one of King's best acts of telling a story. He stuck to what the characters knew and did not embellish an ending. Really fast read.

Never finds its heart. I'm a huge fan of Mr. King's writing. No one tells a story better than he... Until now. The Colorado Kid disappointed me, not for the reason he suspects it will, but because instead of pulling me into the heart of the story, he keeps me at a distance, banned to the front stoop, forced to watch and listen to it unfold through a closed window. I find that I prefer to be in the room and present as a story unfolds.

Refund please. The book was so disappointing that even King apologizes in the afterword. Had I read that first, I surely would not have wasted my limited time!

Very weak tea from an espresso writer. Disappointing in all aspects, this tepid performance fails to deliver anything interesting. I’m just stunned this was written by Mr. King, as if he was possessed by some demon that sapped him of his creative talent. I guess you can’t hit a homerun every time to the plate.

Interesting mystery. Well written with just enough side chatter to make it appear real. The mystery unfolds logically as it seems to follow your own questioning. Fun!

a unique experience. a book .. without Resolution .. sounds painful .. it is, yet i enjoy the whole spirit of thus .. kinda like watching 2001 a space odyssey, each viewer can come up with theories of their own, discuss with others.. reading The Colorado Kid was a unique experience and i'm glad i went on the ride

Ginormous King fan. Major disappointment - not because of lack of resolution. I appreciate the asskicking flip of living in a giant living matrix of the mysterious unknown just as much as the next human clown. But hey, I bought a STORY, and the story dragged like a stump of chalk on a cement sidewalk. 70 pages weren't even PART of the story! The old geezers were just too cutesy and overdrawn, Stephanie was a shadow, and well, it was just boring....hey, I know life can be boring, but that's why we dip into the minds of our favorite authors! To engage in yet another version of reality, hopefully a twisted one that can definitely hold our attention and jerk our minds into another unique, quirky, and hopefully slightly humorous view of the human condition. No investment here. Not even one lackadaisical smile...drat!

Colorado Kid. I found the book quite enthralling but in honesty I read it because of the TV series HAVEN touting it was based on this book. In actuality the only resemblance to the series was the two old geezers from the newspaper, the location of sorts and perhaps the Stephanie character resembling Audry I. The way she thinks and being of course an outsider who was born to be a part of this small community. But as a page turner it did live up to Stephen King standards so enjoy it for what it is..

So bad I couldn’t finish it.. I tried reading this book twice but never made it past the first few chapters and even that was a struggle. It’s the way his main characters talk that put me off. Raar!

Good. It was a quick read and a good lesson learned.

What a tale!. To not be able to catch the tale by it's tail! Gives a wholly fresh sketch on what mystery can mean!

The Colorado Kid. Woulda loved a finely crafted ending. King always has the best endings and endings of his caliber are what most great writers are missing. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters. I would buy The Colorado Kid and read it again! King brings me into the story and that's what I love about his works.

Always surprising!. Well I'm one who liked the story even though it didn't end the way I expected. But surprise at unexpected endings is one of the main reasons I currently have read everything Mr King has published. I don't know who I'm quoting when I say "always keep 'em guessing" but I believe Mr King believes in and employs this premise quite liberally when he is weaving his tales. Thanks again, Stephen, (if I may be so bold) for another few hours of enjoyment!

Colorado Kid. Interesting, we are always looking for a conclusion to everything, and when we don’t find it, than it leaves us a little perplexed.

Great book, but not for everyone.. Read this because I'm a fan of the SyFy series Haven. A great weekend read, but not for those who like their stories wrapped up neatly at the end.

The Colorado Kid. A little gem. Unlike other Stephen King novels in almost every respect. Anyone interested in psycholinguistics or story theory or grammar will find it of interest. It is a story about writers for writers,

Colorado Kid. I had read that Stephen King didn't like this book, I understand why now. I love the Syfy series Haven I had to read the book it was based on. It was very disappointing.

Colorado Kid review. Disappointing.

Let’s your mind run. Playful good fun an easy read that will exercise the brain!

Colorado Kid. I really enjoyed this book as I do all of King's books but the TV show is also very good. Don't see what it has to do with the book but it is fun and I never miss it. Hope it dosent turn into another Golden Years but will wait to see. Thank you so much for the entertainment.

Enjoy the Ride!. Wonderfully written; if you're into a thought-provoking tale, then this one is for you! If you're someone who needs fact and solution to find plots enjoyable, may want to stray from the Colorado Kid.

Going into the Story. So interesting to peer in someone’s day like this. Sitting there as an invisible spectator. I think Stephen King is a master of putting the reader into the scene.

A different tale. This is yet another masterfully-written tale by that Master of the Macabre, Stephen King. While not having the usual paranormal and horror content that his books are noted for it is still full of mystery. Mr King says himself in the afterword that there are people who will be frustrated by the story, and I am sure that there are. I just don't happen to be one of them. I will say nothing further at the risk of spoiling the plot, than to say that Mr King really made the characters in the book come alive for me, and allow me to empathize with their particular situations.

Crime Novel. I love that there isn't really a solution to the story, sorry for spoilers. It led me to question the book well after reading, and it crept into my mind throught the next few days. Wonderful characters as well!

The Colorado Kid. The thing that always makes me salivate when I see anything new (or something I missed previously) from Stephen King are his characters. The way you feel they are people you know. And, as always in a Stephen King novel, hope they survive or get their comeuppance depending on the character. This story does not disappoint in that regard. I wanted to be Stephanie and have the regard of those two eccentric gentlemen. The mystery in the story is very intriguing and I find myself contemplating my own scenarios of how to resolve it these many days later. Do I always need Mr. King to do it for me? As he states on his afterward, life doesn't always end so tidy, but it does always end.

Curious. I really didn't know how to rate this story, if one can call it a story. As Steven King says at the end of the book, it's not so much the solution as the MYSTERY. I'm a little upset he didn't give a solution in the end, bit all the same, I cannot deny that I enjoyed the tale.

The Colorado Kid. As with all of Mr.Kings stories,I loved it! I do not understand, however, what the connection is to the TV series Haven?

THE COLORADO KID. 3.5 Stars. No horror here, but still a worthwhile read in my book! Stephen King states there will be no middle ground on this novel.....that readers will either hate it or love it. As for me, I really enjoyed it as well as discovering in the Afterward what motivated him to write what is depicted as a hard-case-crime mystery. I loved the two "old geezers" (as Mr. King calls them) that own the Weekly Islander newspaper on Moose-Lookit Island, and the way they quizzed and inspired their 22 year old summer intern Stephanie. As for the case of THE COLORADO KID itself, I whizzed right through the telling eager to find out what happened to the mysterious dead man with no identification, and.....was even fine with the ending. This one won't make my favorites shelf, but it held my attention throughout, and I do love the cover even though "she" is not how I envisioned Stephanie.

A non-review review. I have said many times that I am an unabashed Stephen King fan. Not so much a fan of the " horror story" genre but rather a fan of the story telling variety. The Colorado Kid is yet another example of Mr. King's story telling chops. It is a story about no story at all. It is merely a series of facts and data as related to a young reporter working a small town newspaper beat. There is no real beginning and certainly no end. There are Mr. King's well developed characters, characters you feel like you know. The book is, for the most part, little more than a warm afternoon conversation with friends about the oddities of life. Yet, the way this non-story guides you along makes you wish it could go on forever. Somewhere in there I realized it wasn't the non-story I was enjoying, it was the music of the language, his skill with dialogue. A nice drive in Maine or stroll on the beach or loll in the sun - however you choose to look at it.

Not Mr. King’s Best. A story about nothing, kind of like a boring Seinfeld episode. I’ve read a lot of Stephen King. I’d pass on this one.

The Colorado Kid. Fabulous!!! SK does it again...a must read!

Mystery for the sake of mystery. Picked up this book because I'm a fan of the TV show Haven (and of course Stephen King), which has the Colorado Kid as its baseline. Other then the location and two of the main characters (the newspaper men) there is little similarity other then a ypervasive air of mystery that encompasses the entire story. In true Stephen King fashion, the storyline is merely the center of the road on which he drives; the real story are the curves and road side stops. If I can summarize my take on this story, without issuing a spoiler alert, is that this is truly one case where the point of the story IS the road trip and, while not all together a smooth journey, I got to the destination and was pleased with my trip. Bottom line is it is worth the time - and I recommend it with the foregoing review as my only caveat.

AWESOME. Wow this book is awesome, and I can't believe that my favorite show (Haven) is based off of what is now my favorite book.

Haven. I found this book when I was watching haven and it said 'based on the Colorado kid by Stephen king' having been I fan if his other work I bought the book the very next day the book is in some aspects like haven while also mantaing to give you a since of life before Nate and audrey and of course our favorite criminal duke the unexplained parts of this book is much like haven it self all mystery little answer also I loved the fact that the restaurant was named grey gull it reminded me of haven cause thats the name of his restaurant and also mentions on the wurnoes family and of course Dave and Vince . All in all a very good book I would also love to see Stephane on haven maybe a relation to Audrey cause she kinda reminds me of her .

Loved it.. Typical Stephen King. Leaves you hanging and wanting more. With plenty to think about till his next serving.

The Colorado kid. Great read! Not the King book you are used to but keep an open mind. Spin off television series is nothing like the book but give it a try as well.

Quick read. Love the Haven tv series which is apparently based on this book Found the book interesting but to short missing some of the mysteries from the Haven series.

The Colorado Kid - Awesome read!. I so enjoyed this mystery and am totally surprised that I actually agree with Stephen King on the ending! Great job!!

The Colorado Kid. I have to say I'm one of Stephen King's appreciative fans. He never fails to have you absorbed by his stories. From the Stand, to Cujo, to Misery, to The Colorado Kid, they couldn't be more different. How I missed this book, I'm not sure. I own most of them. Some I love, some I really like & the odd one I'm undecided. I also like offbeat TV shows. As long as the show or the book follow the rules of the story, I'm happy. I started to watch Haven at episode 1 & loved it. It had many twists & turns, and not every episode was perfect. The casting was good. The reason I mention this, is because I finally read The Colorado Kid. I loved it. I was worried that either the story or the show would lose out because I saw the show first. Not at all, the whole time I was reading, I could picture the two old newspapermen telling their tale. I felt like I really knew them. The show portrayed them, at least to me, just the way Stephen King wrote them.

The Colorado Kid. All the questions we have about people we meet along the way, How complex we really all are, how mysterious really: no answers to be had, at least not definitive ones, this book points to all this and invites us to let go neat answers and tidy endings.

The Colorado Kid. Didn't care much for this novella. Seriously, save your 6$ for some other book.
