House Rules by Jodi Picoult Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Small Great Things and the modern classics My Sister’s Keeper, The Storyteller, and more, comes a “complex, compassionate, and smart” (The Washington Post) novel about a family torn apart by a murder accusation.

When your son can’t look you in the eye…does that mean he’s guilty?

Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger’s syndrome. He’s hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. He has a special focus on one subject—forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he’s always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he’s usually right.

But when Jacob’s small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob’s behaviors are hallmark Asperger’s, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are thrust directly in the spotlight. For Jacob’s mother, it’s a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, it’s another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob.

And for the frightened small town, the soul-searing question looms: Did Jacob commit murder?

House Rules is “a provocative story in which [Picoult] explores the pain of trying to comprehend the people we love—and reminds us that the truth often travels in disguise” (People).

A Frustrating Read. There were just too many holes to make this book enjoyable. Why no one ever simply asked, “What happened?” somewhere along page 120, left the cloud of unreality over the entire rest of the book. It crossed over from entertainment to frustrating to just ridiculous and then to tedium. It was a huge disappointment to see this fine author succumb to such shoddy plot development. I fear she’s going the way of Mr. Grisham and Mr. Paterson who keep cranking out books without caring any more.

A good read. This book is surprisingly revealing about the struggles and individual and his family faces with Aspergers. It really opened my eyes to the complexity of the disorder. I really enjoyed the book and the flow of characters.

****. Wonderfully written from the point of view of each of the characters. A literary tribute to the Aspie community.... I could hardly put it down!

By Adventures with Brianne. Stop what you are doing and go and get this book NOW!!!!! Words cannot describe how much this story touched my heart. I could not imagine being the mom in this story and what to do in her situation. Jodi Picoult did such an amazing job with this well written book, it made me wonder what all she has gone through with dealing with people with Autism or Asperger's Syndrome. This book would be an amazing book for anyone to read. It really brings awareness to the autistic community and also what it might feel like to be in a person's shoes with Asperger's.

Really?????. I would have loved this book. I feel cheated. I spent my hard earned money on this book. I spent time & became invested in the rich characters & plot & couldn't put it down. I learned more about Asperger's. I enjoyed every second reading it. Then I came to the last page & was sorely disappointed to learn that one of my favorite authors forgot to finish the book. Then wanted me to buy an app.

House Rules. Great for Aspie interest. What I found the most helpful and interesting was the researched facts, explanations and points of views used to help tell the story. This story is told by 5 different main characters. It gives their point of view and how their lives are effected by Aspergers, which I loved! What I didn't love was the ending. It flat out just doesn't have one!

House rules. I loved the boy in this story! Loved the CSI parts. I did not think the romance between the mom and lawyer was necessary. Liked the "did he do it" part. Worth while reading

Obvious question missing. Although there was much good information and insight into asperger syndrome, I (and most of my book group) wondered why no one asked the kid the obvious question: did you? He was certainly high functioning and answered many other questions along the way.

House Rules. This story draws you in. You practically can't stop reading until the story is done. Glad I purchased will read it again. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

eye opening. I loved this book even though the end left me hanging! It also broke my heart to see the similarities between the main character and my 9 year old. We just recently received the same diagnosis. Although his is not as severe. It is a tear jerker and suspenseful too!

Great read. I enjoyed reading this book, not only for the intrigue of the storyline, but because I learned so much. I do not have a child with Autism or Aspergers, but she opened my eyes to their world and the world of the people who live with someone with Aspergers. I have recommend this book to friends and teachers. I cannot imagine anyone not getting a lot out of this book and embracing these characters.

House Rules. If you have read all the reviews to this point you are probably going to buy the book as they are mostly good. The ending is fine just the way it is. That being said, the book is too long, but most of her books are, so if you're a Picoult fan you will expect this. You will learn more about Asperger's than you probably need to know, but it is still interesting. There is a lot of repetition as there are several characters telling the story....a few too many things that happened before. I have not liked several of her books but this is one of the better ones.

Style not mine. The book is exceedingly well researched and written. However, the style of alternating viewpoints makes it difficult to follow, even though that style does allow for a deeper understanding of the individual characters.

Book Worm. This book was an excellent read...really enjoyed it! Although the ending did have you like "umm..." So I wish this author publishes a part two of this novel! 😵

Amazing but.... Just as others have mentioned, this is an exceptionally written book with fantastic characters and a great plot. However, the ending completely leaves you wondering what happens. Definitely worth buying, but I could use an extra 10 pages of closure.

Kept me wanting more. Excellent book that had me turning page after page. I was unable to put it down.

House Rules. This is an exceptionally interesting book. I enjoyed reading the story and the descriptions of parenting an Asperger’s child. The mystery was clever but too convoluted to be believable.

Wow. I couldn't get my homework done. I had to know how it ended. Note: I had this figured out by Case 7. Why didn't they get that mug out the sink when they first glanced at it? And why after 5 days did Jess cell phone just come on? Good stuff! Thx. V

The book that started it all. This was my first book by her and I was hooked. I’ve read almost all of them now. And every time I find a new one I snatch it off the shelf. She really researched how someone with autism would respond and I was impressed with her dedication to getting it right. I love how she tells the story from the different view points and you feel like you’re looking the the characters eyes.

Amazing. AMAZING!! Couldn't put it down!

House Rules. Absolutely outstanding. It carries the excitement of crime and mystery along with a unique way of teaching. I learned so much by reading this book, and it opened my eyes about families with disabled children.

Amazing!. I love her writing style!

Couldn't have been written any better.. Absolutely perfect- especially the very last line!

Super!. Great read! I've recommended it to many of my friends!! One more reason to love this author!

Excellent. Great book. Couldn’t put it down If you understand the main character you would totally understand the ending

House rules. Brilliant! Jodi Picoult did it again, had my attention throughout the entire book. I couldn't wait to found out what the ending would be! Now that I have read all of her books, I hope she is working on another awesome story. She is absolutely one of the best authors I have read. Again awesome!

Not her best work.. I'm so disappointed. Picoult can do so much better - a character who is more of a collection of stereotypes than a person enmeshed in a paper-thin plot. Blech.

I loved this book. It was a really great story but I Knew what happened from very early on in the book. The ending left me with a couple questions but over all very good!!

House Rules, my new fave!. I thought My Sister's Keeper was amazing, but House Rules was even better. I'm so sad that I finished the book, I miss hearing about Emma, Jacob and Theo!!

Disappointing. Figured out the ending in its entirety before I was 1/3 through the book. I stuck with it in hopes there would be a twist but overall a disappointing read with a predictable ending.

Jodi Picoult House Rules. I Love This Book This Book Is Very Emotional

Frustrating Ending. This book is full of so much detail and build up until the author just walks away from it. Intuitively you know how the story will end but I was angry that after investing the time in this book it just ends.

Understanding Aspergers. Great book overall. Was a little dry in some areas. Working with students that have special needs, I felt the book was very true to detailing its interpretation of Aspergers.

This read is amaze!! Do yourself a favor and pick it up!. What attracted me to this book was my curiosity with the autistic spectrum and how it affects so many people on different levels. This is my first read of Jodi Picoult's and I must say that I know consider myself a huge fan. Great work of art. Keep them coming.

Predictable. This is a decent enough book, but it follows a similar Picoult formula. Wish I'd spent my money on something else.

Page Turner!. This is the first Jodi Picult book i’ve read and I LOVED it. I agree that the ending doesn’t leave you with much of a surprise but the whole body of the book is a complete page turner. I litterally coudn’t but it town. Jodi gets into the minds of each character so well…Highly recommend this book!

Why do authors do this?. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the beginning. I loved the characters and the story line but the ending leaves something to be desired. Why do authors feel the need to bring us through a book this thick and then not give any closure? Why let readers get attached to characters and then not let us know the real final chapter?

Amazing. This book really opened my eyes and gave me a better understanding for children with autism and their parents. It kept me reading and had a wonderful plot and was beautifully written. I recommend it to anybody!

Good read. I enjoyed reading this book and especially like that it spreads awareness of Autism.

Great book and page turner!. One my first books I have read by her and I absolutely loved it. It's been awhile since I read it last but I know I'd defiantly read it again.

Wow loved it!. This book is awesome loved it!!!

Fantastic writing but.... This story had me hooked from the beginning. With the characters and the writing flowing to together. It's almost as if she composed this book with her bare hands rather than typing it on a computer. An absolutely great story but I was very disappointed with the ending. She coveys her message very clearly, but leave you wondering "what happened??"

House Rules. Spellbinding! A wonderful insight into the way a person with Aspergers syndrome thinks. A book you will not be able to put down.

House rules. Great book, so, what happened?

House Rule. Excellent read! Couldn't put it down!

House Rules.....rules. I loved this book spool much. It had me hooked from page one! I love the characters, plot and everything about it. As a teacher of the handicapped, I love seeing a main character written so well. Thanks for the read!

Great book. Couldn't put this book down! The end left me wanting more. The writers personal page gives you a spoiler that helps for those wanting a little more though. Can't wait to read her next book.

Furious!!!!. I downloaded the preview only to realize that it is only the acknowledgements. Then I bought the book and still nothing. Just acknowledgements and error pages. I even tried resetting the device. $13 gone! I can't even read the book I bought!

Wow. What a great book!!!!. Not only is it very well written but the subject matter is so different from what you normally see. It was almost impossible to put down and when I did I could hardly wait to get back to it. Highly recommend it to everyone can't wait to read more from this author

House Rules. Great book!! Everyone should take the time to read it.

I Owe This Author Everything!. I bought this book in hopes I could get my mom to read it and understand what life is like in my shoes ( I have Asperger's too ) ...... No other book clearly showed just how it felt, day by day, the constant assault to the senses and the confusion of social interaction. Now my mom has purchased every one of Jodi's books! K

House Rules. Excellent read. Couldn't put it down

Brilliant. Jodi has done it again! You can definitely tell that she has yet again done her research extensively on topics that are highly debated. The characters and topics presented in House Rules really struck home with me and I feel this book should be read by all students in high school. Great work, Jodi!

House Rules. Picoult helps us to understand the family dynamic of having a special child with autism and paints such an accurate picture of Asperger’s Syndrome that it resonated with me on many levels. I am the mother of a child with Asperger’s who seldom sees a portrayal of the real feelings that a family can experience with this syndrome. I can see and hear myself. I can see my daughter, the only sibling of my autistic child. I can see my ex- husband and his inability to cope. Most stories/ films miss the mark on autism but she nails it. Kudos to her research and insight.

House Rules. I was totally involved in this story. I have an adult daughter with Asperger's. I, like Helen, wanted to keep Zine in the main stream of life. I never put a title on her to explain why she was different. I now wonder if I was in denial. I wondered if I was to blame somehow. I never spoke to Zine about why she was different until she was nearly 30 and still living home. Anyway, I felt. Comfort in readying this story and seeing all the traits that Zine has lived with, in print. It was like a validation , of sorts. She is a wonderful girl and has brought so much joy to our lives. Thank you Jodi.
