Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Book Summary

Celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Newbery Honor–winning survival novel Hatchet with a pocket-sized edition perfect for travelers to take along on their own adventures. This special anniversary edition includes a new introduction and commentary by author Gary Paulsen, pen-and-ink illustrations by Drew Willis, and a water resistant cover. Hatchet has also been nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, haunted by his secret knowledge of his mother’s infidelity, is traveling by single-engine plane to visit his father for the first time since the divorce. When the plane crashes, killing the pilot, the sole survivor is Brian. He is alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present.

At first consumed by despair and self-pity, Brian slowly learns survival skills—how to make a shelter for himself, how to hunt and fish and forage for food, how to make a fire—and even finds the courage to start over from scratch when a tornado ravages his campsite. When Brian is finally rescued after fifty-four days in the wild, he emerges from his ordeal with new patience and maturity, and a greater understanding of himself and his parents.

Such a good book. I haven’t read the whole book but so far it’s VERY fun to read and very interesting. Gary Paulsen sure knows how to make a great book.

Should be read. This book was amazing, in 5th grade we read this for 4 weeks but never got back to it. Now that I have a phone and have it on digital I can resume the adventure {a good book with a little thing in it that keeps you on edge all the time, like mc Donald’s I’m loving it 💚❤️}

Best Book Ever!!!!!. I would love to read this book because my dad had read the whole entire book and loved it and he says that that is the best book that he has ever read in his life and he doesn’t like to read that much so this book has to be that good.

Hatchet. Best survival story ever! I do not really like reading but I had to for school and I could not stop reading!!! Love it !!

Amazing!!!. We read this book when I was in 3rd or 4th grade and I loved it! It was the book that started my reading journey. It gave me a love of books. I’m 21 now and will never forget this book ❤️

Hatchet. It’s great

Not for me. Book summery: man crashes onto island. Soon makes/ fins a hatchet. What’s the rest of the book? The man trying to survive. That’s it. Literally. I hated it. Do not recommend.

Hatchet. All you people hew think it's so boring well maybe why it was so boring to you people is because you don't have a good imagination 🙊 take that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the best books I've ever read 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

It’s so exciting!. I love this book! It’s so exciting!

Engaging. It feels very vivid, vibrant & “in the moment”. I understand why people think he is real. Thank you to the author & publisher for this piece of eye opening, life affirming, life changing coming of age story.

This is 2 -3 chapters, then it cuts off. I would like a refund. Rip off

Great book. If you are looking for a great fiction book this is the one for you. It is about a young boy who was in a plane crash and got trapped in a forest. He had to learn how to survive on his own until he could get help. A truly moving story. It really helps you value what you have.

Still the bst. I read this in 5th grade now I’m in 7th and it’s still one of the best books I’ve ever read

I hate this book. I was so boring and had no dialogue it’s dumb

Cool book. Best book ever love it have the book in real life

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏. 👏👏👏👏👏we read this in school and we were supposed to be keeping up with the class but- IT GOT TOO EXCITING PAST CHAPTER ONE AND IN 10 MINUTES I WAS AT CHAPTER 10 THATS HOW GOOD IT WAS OMG

Thank you. I’ve read this book more times than any other in my life. It’s my own survival guide through the inexplicable loneliness that pairs society.

Hatchet. Great teenage survival story.

Easy to read, charming & fun!. Had to revisit this old book from my childhood. I’d remember it differently, however, it was more fun now than it was back then because Brian’s mistakes lead to him being tougher and more patient. Many cases he could’ve easily died: Bear attack, moose attack, starvation, depression/suicide, drowning, poisoning/illness/unclean wound, etc. It was persistent kept them going!

Very intriguing storyline. This book kept getting me to read!

5 Stars!. Heartwarming and beautifully written!

Hatchet!. This is book is incredible I’ve only been reading it for a week or two and I’ve already finished it. This I could read over and over again it tells such an amazing story. I would definitely recommend it! ❤️

Engaging yet dull.. I loved this book. It kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. In fact, I finished it in two days. It was nice seeing how Brian overcame his challenges, and how he changed as a person, but at times the writing felt dull. I felt like the author could have been a bit more descriptive. Though the writing style is GREAT for younger readers. Other than that I think the book is great. Would definitely recommend.

Ripoff. I got this book In a paper copy and when I got it home I opened it up and the pages were blank. Very frustrating.😠

Father - son. Read this with my son! Good quality time.

Boring. The story progresses way too fast, nothing builds up and Brian’s issues are often rarely explored in Depth because the plot is moving so fast. The book needed to be longer, 180 pages isn’t enough to tell a survival story and the pacing shows.

Awsome. I read this book five times it is so good🙂

Thank you. I loved this book so much!

Best Book to Read in School. Love!!!

It’s Awesome. I’ve read it 3 times and I can’t stop reading. It’s one of the best books ever.

Awsoms. It’s so awesome and sad but I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

H. Good so far on chapter 4-5

What?. How do people think this book wasn’t great. Also ITS A KIDS BOOK that’s why it’s short. Some of these peeps are dumb.

Amazing. I read this book back in I think 6th grade and it was really good. I never read it agin until now and I am now in ninth grade. I was watching castaway with my younger brother, mom and stepdad and it reminded me of this book. I am now going to ask for the second book.

AMAZING. my dad recommended this book to me and i finished it and i can now say this is me and my dad’s favorite book

Love the book but maybe like a hundred or something pages.. Put something everyone else will love

Amazing. I loved it! Great story.

The hachet. Terrible book terrible artist, it was just terrible.

Good reas. You could say it gets slow in the middle but still entertaining to read.

Amazing stories. The point of a book is to allow our imagination to complete the story in our own unique way. While the base of the story is the same for everyone, everyone views it differently. This series was amazing and full of life. Growing up walking in the woods and plains by myself I can imagine my exit this book is vastly different then someone who grew up in a city. Now that a live in a city I can definitely see such. All in all amazing story.

Cool. So good it was the best book ever

Read for Assignment. This was a story about a boy who is in a plane crash in the remote wilderness of Canada and survives. The focus is on the survival and Brian's time in wilderness, not so much on the before and after of the crash. I enjoyed reading this so much, I couldn't wait to pick it up again. The author did a great job writing at the appropriate age level to make it interesting and comprehensible. It was a very realistic plot as well. The one disappointment for me was the ending. I thought it was too abrupt. It was not satisfying. After all Brian goes through to survive, I felt the author owed the reader a little bit more to the life after rescue. This made me think that maybe the author did this intentionally so the reader could draw their own conclusions and therefore create great classroom discussions. I read this book along side my daughter who had to read it for school. I was amazed at all she took from reading this book. The forecasting she was able to do and the conclusions. I was happy about her interest which kept her focus. Which almost offset my disappointment in the ending.

It’s amazing. There is some people that say this book is boring. I think those people have absolutely no sense about books. It is a very exciting thrill ride with good vocab and it teaches you things about life lessons.

Love it. Read this book in fifth grade paper back, loved it , A story about survival of the fittest I guess he does encountered a lot of things I’m not going to spoil.

Great book for young souls. Provides a young soul a map for finding their way when times get rough. A must read

It was the best. I loved this book 😍😇

Hatchet..yawn. I read this book on 5th grade, and I remember is that we all hated the book, back then I thought it was boring, and now as a 20 year old I still do. It’s just my opinion, but it is a very bland book, there is nothing that made it special. The only exciting part is when he picks berries from a bush.

👏🏾. Love this book I love the forest and I wish to run away to the forest when I’m old enough, and this and another book “My Side Of The Mountain” encourages me

Amazing. Best book I have ever read!!!

Suspenseful. Good book
