The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton Book Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Homecoming comes a novel that takes readers on an unforgettable journey through generations and across continents as two women try to uncover their family’s secret past.

A tiny girl is abandoned on a ship headed for Australia in 1913. She arrives completely alone with nothing but a small suitcase containing a few clothes and a single book—a beautiful volume of fairy tales. She is taken in by the dockmaster and his wife and raised as their own. On her twenty-fi rst birthday, they tell her the truth, and with her sense of self shattered and very little to go on, "Nell" sets out to trace her real identity. Her quest leads her to Blackhurst Manor on the Cornish coast and the secrets of the doomed Mountrachet family. But it is not until her granddaughter, Cassandra, takes up the search after Nell’s death that all the pieces of the puzzle are assembled. A spellbinding tale of mystery and self-discovery, The Forgotten Garden will take hold of your imagination and never let go.

All books should be this great!. Excellent! Started off a little confusing since it goes back & forth between current day and past but so worth the read. Family secrets woven so skillfully in a book that was hard to put down.

A MUST read!. This book will pull you in so fast and will not let you go until the end. I found myself being consumed but yet not wanting the story to end. I have read thousands upon thousands of books and rarely does a book captivate me like this one has.

Got lost in the pages of the lost garden.... I loved this book and it's beautiful imagery not to mention the beautiful story within it's pages. I recommend this book to everyone who loves books and especially one to read that will take you far away to distant lands. It's one of my favorite novels by far; right up there within the ranks of : The Help", and "Water for Elephants". Read this book. You'll be so happy to pass it on to other book lovers as well. R. Casadei. May, 2011.

Fabulous!. Fantastic book. Best I've read in years. I could not put it down and read it in less than a day. Strongly recommend it!!

Wonderful book!. I couldn't put it down!

Wanted to love it. ...but alas, too simplistic, fairy-talish, and predictable, despite being extraordinarily convoluted.

Exceptional read. The book is very well written and draws the reader in to the story. Each of the characters are engaging and entice you to feel for their plight. Above all else this book is about the lengths that people will go to for the ones they love. While heart breaking at points it is truly a hauntingly beautiful read.

Loved it. What a phenomenal read...every single chapter had me hooked...I felt I identified with each character in some way

Enchanting, breathtaking and heartbreaking. This is the first book I read from this author and I was very impressed—the continuity, flow and connectivity are seamless. The forgotten Garden is the tragic story of Eliza and her pure heart, her legacy—of the people she loved, and lost, and the evil people who changed her destiny. The author is able to weave in fairy tales that are allegories and in themselves prophesies of what is to come in such a way that you cannot put the book down looking for more clues across the time periods that tie in with each other in a way that you cannot get lost. You cry and laugh with her characters, and even after you’re done with the book you keep thinking of them. Like how sad it was that Rose turned out to be just like her mother. The only part of the book I was disappointed in was the end. It felt rushed. I was hoping for some more resolution: that Cassandra found the connection Nathaniel had..that somehow in the boxes Clara possessed there was a journal with Eliza’s musings of the year she was away (we really don’t find out what was there). The importance of the sketch of Eliza Nell found in the cabin and then hid in the book. That the portrait of Rose would be further inspected and they’d be able to see that right next to her Eliza had also been painted over. Mary’s aunt Eleanor’s connection to Nell. Loved these quotes: “It was as if, with the birth of the baby, the anchor Eliza had been seeking all her life had lodged into the earth of Blackhurst.” “Finally, Eliza was home” “The person she had spent a lifetime seeking, her other half. She was whole at last, heading toward home”

The Forgotten Garden. All the above reviewers have raved about this book. I am the "wet blanket" here....sorry! I thought the book was way too long, characters just a bit too good or bad to be believable. The whole garden thing just too dramatic and I really didn't need the fairy tales. However....everybody else seems to have loved the book, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me!

A great read. I loved this book, couldn't put it down.

Great book!. I loved this book. Such an interesting and complex plot with a surprise at the end!

The Forgotten Garden. The author intertwined he story lines together creating a maze of interplay between characters and time. The characters were all believable with no frivolous side tracking...everything was pertinent to the stories conclusion.

The forgotten garden. Magical. So well written. A multi-layered grand adventure.

Could not put down!. Great book....once inside the story, it is very hard to stop reading! I was desperate to know the whole truth.

Captivating!. Beautiful story that kept me guessing clear to the end. I will keep this in my library and read it again someday.

Couldn't stop reading. I loved Kate Morton's first book House at Riverton so I thought I'd read this book also. I was not disappointed. It had a very good story line and was not predictable. The book was long enough so I had time to feel connected to the characters. The jumping back and forth in time was confusing at first, but once I got into the story and understood what was going on, it was no longer confusing and I actually think it was the best way to tell the story.

The Forgotten Garden. I found myself so deeply engaged in this fascinating story. I loved how it went from old to new explaining the connection between the characters. Once I started reading, couldn't put this book down.

The forgotten garden. I could not put this book down! I'd get up early to read the next chapter. I've been carrying my iPad everywhere for a stolen minute in which to read. So many twists and turns, some to be predicted, some never imagined. Absolutely one of the most interesting stories I've ever read with such wonderful characters!

Astonishing!. Loved the book! The mystery, the storytelling amazing! One of the best book I read this year!,,

Wonderful saga. I love a family saga that spans generations and decades. The characters were intriguing and alive. I rated this a 4 star as I would have liked to read the stories of their lives as they were lived, a continuum, rather than the hopscotching between generations. Still a very worthy read.

The Forgotten Garden. Well written story spanning several generations and two continents - it was hard to put down and delivered several unexpected twists worth waiting for. It draws from and uses images from fairy tales you will recognize, but woven in the author's unique way. Makes me want to travel to the English coast!

Way, way too long. And too slowly progressing to meddle through the whole thing. Too many time jumps to keep track of or hold my interest. I finally moved on to the last couple of chapters to find out what the secret is and could not have imagined reading the whole thing. Sorry, but i think that the diary of Nell could have narrated to a point where Cassandra could have picked up the rest of the story and it would have been less convoluted .

Great Read. A family mystery unraveled through history and infused with romance; a book I will think about often.

Loved it!!. Great story telling.

Silly book. not her best book.

Great story!. This is a really fabulous book with well developed characters. It held my attention from page 1. My only difficulty with the book was keeping track of all the characters over 3 generations. Sometimes I could not remember who was privy to what. But it's well worth reading and the author does a great job of tying up the numerous story lines

Spellbound. I could not put down The Forgotten Garden. My second Morton novel. A real page turner again! What great imagination she has! And such a way of unrolling a story so that you are engaged by each and every character. I can’t wait to read another of her books!

The Forgotten Garden. Amazing read, this book will draw you into a twisted family mystery spanning several generations. One of my favorites, I couldn't put it down.

Awesome. A++++++
