Getting to Happy by Terry McMillan Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Terry McMillan's exuberant return to the four unforgettable heroines of Waiting to Exhale.

Waiting to Exhale was more than just a bestselling novel—its publication was a watershed moment in literary history. McMillan's sassy and vibrant story about four black women struggling to find love and their place in the world touched a cultural nerve, inspired a blockbuster film, and generated a devoted audience.

Now, McMillan revisits Savannah, Gloria, Bernadine, and Robin fifteen years later. Each is at her own midlife crossroads: Savannah has awakened to the fact that she's made too many concessions in her marriage, and decides to face life single again—at fifty-one. Bernadine has watched her megadivorce settlement dwindle, been swindled by her husband number two, and conned herself into thinking that a few pills will help distract her from her pain. Robin has an all-American case of shopaholism, while the big dream of her life—to wear a wedding dress—has gone unrealized. And for years, Gloria has taken happiness and security for granted. But being at the wrong place at the wrong time can change everything.

All four are learning to heal past hurts and to reclaim their joy and their dreams; but they return to us full of spirit, sass, and faith in one another. They've exhaled: now they are learning to breathe.

Wonderful. This book is outstanding. I could not put it down. Each chapter was more interesting than the one before. I hope a screen play is done. I would love to see this as a movie.

Wonderful read. This sequel is outstanding.

MAD!!!. ... At myself for not reading this sooner!!! Terry McMillan is brilliant!! This is a wonderful piece to read, and somehow place yourself in each characters triumphs and tribulations. Just like the prequel, this can easily be A MOVIE!! Thank you TM! Faithful reader Waiting for more...

Great book!. This book is great. It is a definite page turner. I loved it. :)

..... This book was revolutionary to the core . I appreciated every page they all meant something to me. After not writing for so long this book really showcased an era in books that slightly has been depleted from the African American writers presently. I was inspired and I thank you

Very good read!!!!!. This book is a great read!!!!! It's something in here for everyone to take away to make you a better you....

Happy. This was a great sequel to a great book. I can't wait for the film.

Nothing spectacular. This book was okay. I expected more. It was humorous but the story really didn't seem to goanywher

Getting to Happy. The book started out strong with several surprises that kept me intrigued. However, as the story continued the girls lives became to "normal". I kept waiting for some more DRAMA! I became a lil bored. I guess the point of the story was to get the characters to "normal" so they could achieve an inner peace so thet could "get to happy." But a lil drama goes far. Leaves the reader's emotions running high.

Getting to Happy. It was great to have a continues from Waiting to Exhale. I knew all the characters so it helped me to follow the book better. The strongeness of sisterhood was still very much present In this book as of all her books. A must read!

Nothing exuberant about this book. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed with this book. They are still having conflicts with themselves. Maybe when the movie comes out it'll be better.

Disappointing!. This was such a predictable, boring read! I expected so much more. Maybe when the original came out there werent enough books about black women to choose from. But 15 years later we have had such an influx of good writing, this novel left much to be desired.

Great book!!!. Great read!

Same Ole. Eh, it was ok. Same ole characters with the same ole bitterness with some over the top drama thrown in.

Getting to happy. I loved this book I couldn't put it down once I began to read it!!!

Wonderful. Getting to Happy just wow wonderful book to read I really love it 5 stars.

Getting to Happy. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not a big book reader, but always enjoy reading Terri's book. Own or have downloaded most of them. The characters come to life and make the reader feel they are a part of the story. Can't wait for the movie!!!

Traci. I hope it's a good read.

Pretty Good. I enjoyed this book a lot! Like most of McMillians books, it was hard to put down. Although I might not have been excited about the ending, I enjoyed getting there!

Disappointing!. I expected more from Terry McMillan. This book was predictable from beginning to end. Writing was mundane and the characters seem to ramble on endlessly about nothing. Such a disappointment.

Whatt????. This was not what I expected...very disappointed.

Life happens. I expected more for the four best friends after catching up with their lives after so many years, but life happens. Expectation and reality are not always the same. I enjoyed catching up with the ladies.

Exhaled . . . . . Kind Of. I was super excited when this book came out. I had no idea that we would be able to see these ladies again after so long. It was a good book, not great - definitely not the first one and marred by the screenplay as I didn't have the pleasure of seeing the characters in my mind the way I did before they were mass produced. It was lovely to return, but like most things it wasn't the original.

Great Book!. This book is great. It is an easy read and it keeps me wanting to read more. Love it.

Virtual book club. I joined a virtual book club with a view friends, this was our second read. Our first read "The Help" was certainly a hard act to follow. The story lines of "Getting to Happy" are typical, needy woman who either have everything and still need a man to validate them and low down black men who will stop at nothing to humiliate and marginalize black women. I appreciated the fact that McMillan touched on some very important issues of the day; the abuse of anti-depresents, Young Black men and drugs, and even the homosexual lifestyle. However, I think she took a very liberal position on the subject illegal drug use. Speaking of Liberal & Conservative: I am a Black Republican who did not vote for Obama. Actually I think he is all ****symbolism and NO substance*** I do not see how insulting the Republican party and George Bush added any value to the story line. It simply made her look like another hypnotized - Black Kool-aide drinker." "All I need to know is that he is Black and he has my vote." or the white Dems who gave him the, "He is such an articulate Negro vote." The insult to the republican party came so soon in the book I actually started to flush the book in the toliet in tiny little pieces. Two things kept me from doing that: 1: I would not be able to participate in this month's discussion with my book club members and 2: the book is on my $700 iPad 2, it just would not be prudent. If you are typical, lonely, man hating, female who though you hate all men still need them to make you whole, this is the book for you. If you are self validating but would like a look in to that world, pick up this book. All others keep looking, this book is not for you.

Getting to happy. I really enjoyed this book. Terri you did your thang I can't wait for the movie. I am happy you found your lost love of writing you do it well.

Love. Loved this book ...and pretty much everything by this author!

Great Book. Very good read. Can't wait for the movie to be made!

Pretty good. The book was pretty good. I found myself visualizing the old characters from the Waiting to Exhale movie as I read the book lol. Nice sequel I just wish there was a better wrap-up at the end.

Wonderful. Terry McMillan has a way with words that paints an exact picture. The previous movie helped with the characters. Great read. Can't wait for the movie.

I Have Read Better. Let me start off by saying that I love Terry McMillan and have usually read everything that she has written in 3 days or less. It took me over 3 months to finish this book. It started out really slow. It would literally put me to sleep. I finally sat down the other day and said that I am going to finish reading this book. I did. It got much better. The pace picked up and it got more interesting. Hated the ending. Thought there should have been more to the story. Hopefully her next book will be better because I really like Terry and would love to see better work from her in the future.

Awesome. Please say there is a movie to follow? I'm sad that I ran out of pages. Once again great work!

IT WAS OKAYYY. I did enjoy the book even though it was full of so much heart ache. It annoyed me when the characters would have something happy and fun going on and then it would turn ugly. How could so much tragedy occur in all of their lives. Someone should have been happy throughout the book. This book did not lift my spirits.

Awesome Read -- just what I needed. This book is great. I am currently going through a divorce and this book helped me a great deal. It reaffirmed that I was indeed doing the right thing. It is a great book for all women. You will see a little of yourself in all the characters. I most related to Savannah and what she was going through in this book. You will Chadian the relationships you have with your close friends after reading it. Awesome, awesome, awesome.....was said to have to finish it and put these characters back on the shelf once again. Excellent sequel. Terry even I didn't know any better I would have thought you were spying on my life. You out did yourself.

Wonderful. Ms. McMillan did it again with a beyond great story line. I love the ladies back then and I appreciate then now as they have matured. Great work, great reading.

Good Read. I enjoyed catching up on old characters as well and I'm happy Terry had written another book she is a great storyteller with an art for bringing reality and depth to each character. I do wish the ending had a little more zip! Would love to see the movie

Awesome. Great read! I read this book in 2 days...could not put it down.

Nice sample. I really enjoyed reading the sample of this book..I am seriously thinking of getting this book. I hope it will not dissapoint me..

So so........ Boring and predictable is what I have to say about this read! It seemed all over the place and no one really seems to reach a peace within themselves after 15 yrs! Too much cheating and lying goin on with these 50 yr old SBF's! (single black female) lol. Anywho, this read was one of the book choices for a book club I am apart of and boy were we all disappointed that we spent money on this book! Mine was a whopping $14.99 + tax thru iTunes. What a waste. I'm only givin 3 stars because there were a few parts that made me laugh, but this is bein Real Generous to say the least!!!! Enter at own Risk!!!!!

Excellent. Terry mcmillian never disappoints me!!

Very Very Disappointed. I purchased this book the day it hit the shelf. It was so boring, wordy without saying anything …it took me over two years to finished it…please don't waste your money

Getting to Happy. I read this book in one sitting. I was moved to tears by the plight these characters experienced. Terry McMillian's writing made me feel like I was a part of their lives. I been waiting for so long for this type of closer from Waiting to Exhale. I read that book and watched that movie over and over. I hope Getting to Happy will be adapted to film. Getting to Happy is one of many great books by Terry McMillian. I can't say it's one of her best because all her books are wonderful. I can say it is the one that made reflect on my on life. Thank you for another great book.

Disappointment. I read the sample and then purchased the book. Nothing really happen with the characters, I want my money back. This book was awful!

Getting To Happy. This book was a great sequel to waiting to exhale, it would be great on the big screen, except for we wouldn't have our Whitney Houston or Gregor Hines to play their parts. So sad. But all and all a nice read.

Nothing but the truth. I was in my early thirties when I first read this book and kind of shook my head at some of the reactions of the characters. Now that I’m in my late forties, I felt every emotion the ladies went through because similar situations happened to me or one of my friends. We’ve shared laughs, tears, heartbreak and joy just like these lifelong friends. This should be a requirement for every woman with a group of friends over the age of forty!

Ma'am. This is not nonfiction! Please move to right category! Please and thank you!

Great sequel. ...the story flows smoothly as if Waiting To Exhale was appended to the start of this book. I could picture how each of the ladies aged over the 15 years to the characters presented in this book. Lots of laughs ( at the right time) and believable story lines.

Getting to happy. This a good read, this was the longest I've read a book as It was a slow read. It got better in the end I'd truly enjoyed it.

Didn't Disappoint!. A good read. Thank you, Terry!

Getting to Happy. This was a great story! It was wonderful to see these characters again and how they dealt with all of life's ups and downs, tragedies and triumphs. Yet continuing to stick together and support each other like sisters/friends/family should. These ladies have grown stronger and wiser over the years. And they are still telling it like it is and keeping it real.
