Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult Book Summary

Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper and Small Great Things pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by a school shooting. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.

Love this book. As a person whom hates to read, this book made me want to read. Awesome book, easy read, definitely recommend it.

Great Read. Wow, what a novel!

Loved it!. Now I don't think picoult isn a great writer, but I love her books. This was one of my favorites. It was intriguing, suspenseful, and kept me guessing. I would recommend this book and the pact. They are similar in which teenagers explore their life moving on after a horrible mistake. I'm working my way through vanishing acts. Not bad, but also not my favorite.

Awesome. I'm an 18 year old boy and have a hard time focusing on anything, especially reading a book. I read this book all they way through and didn't want to stop reading until I was finished this is an awesome book with a good ending

Nineteen minutes. Well done; I read this book right after reading "defending Jacob"- it was by chance I read both books back-to-back. Both should be read by teachers and parents... Parenting: a job to be done or a relationship to be developed?

lovelovelove!!. I started this book in hopes to read it over the course of a three week break from school, and ended up reading in two days. I could not put it down! If you like twists and surprises this is the book for you!

Nineteen Minutes. Hands down the BEST book that I've EVER read.

Amazing. Best book I have read!!!!

Life is unfair...Amazing book. This book will go straight to your heart without any warning and it'd keep you in tears from the beginning till the end. One of my favorite Jodi Picoult's books. Yeah it made me sad & heartbroken ,but again this is life :(

Outstanding. Nineteen Minutes is my favorite book. Jodi Picoult out did herself in this book. You feel so connected to the main character. It is one of the best books I have read.

A Must Read!. I personally feel that this is the book that every High School student should read. Everyone needs to know and understand the impacts that school bullying has on a person and the dire consequences that it may follow for the bullies and victims. In this book, it led to a school shooting.

Amazing!. I absolutely loved this book! I have read 19 minutes and My sisters keeper. I highly recommend this one :)

Heartbreaking Phenomenal Read. One of those books you hate to finish but cannot put it down. Heartbreaking subject matter written so readable you feel something with each character. Beautiful character depth and relatability. Outstanding read. Highly recommended.

Nineteen Minutes. LOVE LOVE LOVE. This book was absolutely amazing. Definitely worth the read!

Buying The Book!. I just read a sample of this. I am going to get this book now! I fell in love with it. :)

❤️😊🍃💜 🌝🌀🏳️‍🌈🇻🇳. Awesome

The best. Book I've ever read. It really makes you think.

Not my favorite. Not the best picoult book.

Really good!. I enjoyed this a lot! It is definitely not what you think it is!

Nineteen Minutes. I couldn't put this book down. It kept me guessing until the end.

Thoughtful and emotional. This book is one of my favorites. By far her best book.

19 minutes. I am a father of 3 young girls, I read this book twice, both time's I cried and empathized with the caracater of Peter and his parents. My daughter was born with a severe heart defect and required a transplant at 5 months old. Dealing with life's tradjedies has made us more aware of how short life can be and to value the moments with our loved ones. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I rarely cry for anything! Tim

19 Minutes. I've read this book 4 times, once a year for 4 years, & I still notice something different every time, & it always touches me in a different way. It's by far my favorite book of all time

Heartbreakingly realistic. I wouldn't say this is my favorite Jodi Picoult book ( that is reserved for My Sisters Keeper and House Rules). This book hits so many nails on the head that it is frightening. This is the new reality of this world. I thunk this book sends an excellent message to mothers, on how easy it is for you child to become someone you don't know. I think this book especially sends out a message to schools, on how bullying should NOT be tolerated. Zero tolerance! I would recommend this as a summer reading for high school kids to raise awareness. Jodi did it again- she got me hooked from page one.

Nineteen Minutes. Being a high school teacher this book resonated with me how cruel children are taught to be to fit in. How many marginalized children need to be hurt in a country over run by hate. Bullying should never be tolerated or normalized. Safe places should always be provided for children that are both the bullied and the bullies. There are reasons for bullies and they are often hurting also and have no safe place to be anything but a bully. Some schools are changing, but bullying still continues. I have seen where school students are a part of day long team building activities, with mixed groups, and they have had wonderful outcomes. This has been done at the high school level. I believe it should be started at the young 4th & 5th grade levels, where their place in the school identity begins. It is important to start young teaching children it is ok to be who you are and that they are taught empathy, because things don’t always seem like they are.

Outstanding and Riviting!. I could not put this book down! We’ve all seen bullying and it’s effect. I’ve always done my best to stop it, in part, by showing the bully out to be what he or she is…

excellent work. i have read this many times and it is required in my highschool since we have so much bullying. I am glad that i grabbed this book and that i got to read it again. :)

I'm sad.... This book was required reading for all students at my high school... It was very depressing yet there were things that I wanted to know but a lot of those things were never revealed...

5 Stars. This is the first Jodi Picoult I’ve read. I really enjoyed it. Very well written and kept me guessing on what was going to happen until the end.

Amazing Book!!. Extremely well written and amazing story line. The intensity and depth of the characters kept me from putting it down, it was really a great book filled with emotion and heartbreak that can bring anyone to tears. Great job Jodi Picoult! I would recommend it to anyone.

Engaging. Enjoyed it

Nineteen Minutes. This book was excellent, though it’s a tough topic it was amazing. The author writes from each character’s perspective. It was definitely hard to put down, I read it in a day and a half. I highly, highly recommend it!

Amazing!!. I couldn't put this book down. I finished this book in a day and a half, literally stayed up all night reading this! Awesome book! Keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times!

Fast read. Always a fast read lots of facts and in dept with all of her books

Wow. Wow this book had me at "chapter 1" lol

Nineteen minutes. Disappointing end. Good story up to the end!

Nineteen Minutes. Absolute page turner and I enjoyed every character throughout, which is rare! One of my favorites by Jodi.

Wow. This book was once assigned as a class read. Even though the class ended I was totally hooked and had to continue reading ;)

Not my favorite JP book but.... A page-turner nonetheless. Always riveting courtroom drama and I love the sensitive topic. A reminder that kids are still cruel; that hasn't changed over the generations, but the way it's responded to by all parties (teachers, parents and victims) is definitely disheartening more often these days!

Every high school student should read. I read this book my sophomore year in college for my English comp II class. It was a great tool for discussion and understanding. I will have my children read it someday when they are old enough to understand and comprehend it.

Fantastic. I recommend this book to everyone I know. I am a huge fan of Picoult's writing style. I personally think this could be her best book.

Surprising!. Loved it. I totally thought I knew what was going on. The ending caught me off guard! Loved it.

nineteen minutes. This book has affected me more than any I can remember. Having witnessed firsthand the lifelong devastating effect that bullying has on a child, it broke my heart as the author transitioned from the viewpoint of the victim, Peter, desperate to be accepted, to his lifelong friend, Josie, who felt helpless to muster up the courage to defend Peter against the cruel actions of her "popular" friends out of a fear that she, too, would become a target of Peter's tormentors. I felt a special empathy for Peter's parents, who lovingly raised their son, but were forced to examine, after the fact, if there was anything they could have done to change the outcome of this all too real human tragedy.

Great Book!. One of my favorites! This was my first Jodi Picoult book I ever read and that was when I was in my last year of High School which was technically 5 years ago!!! I have fallen in love with the author ever since. And have kept collections of all her writing. Keep writing Jodi !! LOVE IT!!!

Good and Bad. This book was incredibly depressing. I’m a big fan of Ms Picault’s writing but I struggled with much of this book because of its existential nature. As a parent I found it very difficult to except the premise that these parents were often so blind to the terrible difficulties their children were in and that they basically chose to ignore the issues. Additionally, the premise put forward by the expert psychiatrist during the trial rang false in my view. Basically I felt that unlike many of her other work this book, although relevant and timely, missed the mark.

19 Minutes. Extremely drug out and boring.

Another good one. Not my favorite JP book but would read it again.

Disappointing. I was disappointed with the way this book was written. Yes, there was a surprise ending. My husband figured it out immediately. But that doesn't redeem this book. It felt more Iike a screen play of a typical Hollywood movie where you fill in the blanks, than a book. Although it would never be made into a movie because it's all been covered before in the media. It was contrived and predictable (boring). I felt if I really wanted to understand the effects of bullying & peer pressure leading to school shootings, I would research it and not read a poorly written novel such as this one. I felt it was written on a 5th grade reading level with the occasional "big" word thrown in with the help of a Thesaurus. Oh, except I wouldn't want my 5th grader reading it and thinking that this is what real life in high school is like. For some, but not all kids. Does everyone have sex without a promise (marriage) just because they fell in love? I find it hard to believe everyone in the world uses the F bomb multiple times when they get stressed. I know plenty of people who don't. I'm not naive, but I found it annoying. This was my first and last Jodi Picoult novel.

Incredible. I have read this book three times and I love it. I have read all of Jodi picoults books and each and every time I read one of her books, I feel lost in time. Her books make you cry, smile, hope, fear . Her books give you chills and leave you breathless. After each chapter there is a mental "I didn't see that coming" or an "oh my God! That did not really just happen!". Nineteen minuets is one of my favorite books of Jodi's. I highly suggest anyone looking to be captivated by words in a world so scarily relatable, to read this book. You will NOT be disappointed and that's a promise. This book is about a teen struggling with bullying during his entire 17 years of life. But when the bullying becomes too much, Peter Houghton brings a gun and shoots 29 of his classmates. This book takes you through the story of Peter as a victim, and and a villain. Hero and perpetrator, will you feel bad for Peter and sympathize or cast him as a horrible person? That's to be determined but nothing is what it seems.

11 out of 10!. This was the best book I have ever read. Jodi Picoult really has your mind in a whirl during this book! The ending made my jaw drop, literally. It is a page turner and once you start, you will never ever stop! I give this book a million stars!

Excellent Book!. This is a must read!

Nineteen Minutes. This book is truly amazing! I loved reading it as it entices you and is very trilling. A real page turner.

Amazing. I own each and every one of Jodi Picoult's books.. The first book of hers I ever read was "The Tenth Circle" (amaaaazing!!). After that, I was hooked! I slowly bought and read every book she has ever written.. Such a good writer! This book is one of my favourite ones of hers, I read it in one night because I couldn't put it down after I started it! It's soo good, and you definitely will want to read more of her books once you read this one :)

Another good novel by Picoult. No surprise here, Jodi Picoult writes another awesome novel. Good for young adults as it has a focus on high school relations and dynamics. Great book

Nineteen Minutes.... this book truly has you thinking and it is a story that you will NEVER forget. it is absolutely amazing and a MUST read.
