Cell by Stephen King Book Summary

From international bestseller Stephen King, a high-concept, ingenious and terrifying story about the mayhem unleashed when a pulse from a mysterious source transforms all cell phone users into homicidal maniacs.

There’s a reason cell rhymes with hell.

On October 1, God is in His heaven, the stock market stands at 10,140, most of the planes are on time, and Clayton Riddell, an artist from Maine, is almost bouncing up Boylston Street in Boston. He’s just landed a comic book deal that might finally enable him to support his family by making art instead of teaching it. He’s already picked up a small (but expensive!) gift for his long-suffering wife, and he knows just what he’ll get for his boy Johnny. Why not a little treat for himself? Clay’s feeling good about the future.

That changes in a hurry. The cause of the devastation is a phenomenon that will come to be known as The Pulse, and the delivery method is a cell phone. Everyone’s cell phone. Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the pitch-black night of civilization’s darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature...and then begins to evolve.

There’s really no escaping this nightmare. But for Clay, an arrow points home to Maine, and as he and his fellow refugees make their harrowing journey north they begin to see crude signs confirming their direction. A promise, perhaps. Or a threat...

There are 193 million cell phones in the United States alone. Who doesn’t have one? Stephen King’s utterly gripping, gory, and fascinating novel doesn’t just ask the question “Can you hear me now?” It answers it with a vengeance.

Beware your cell!. I don't want to give everything away, so I'm keeping it brief. I can never say enough wonderful things about King. I've been an avid fan for over 13 years. This story is right on par with the current times we live in. I was terrified to answer my phone for a long while!! You must read this!

Classic King. If you love Kings books like Gerald's Game or Under the Dome -- then you must read The Cell.

If I read extra fast..... Then it was a good book; I read extra fast.

Don’t answer the phone!. Many reviewers have said, at any place or site where you can review a book on your phone, that the scariest thing about this book is that it could probably happen. I wholeheartedly agree! I finished reading Stephen King’s Cell only two weeks ago and it is utterly terrifying! On a seemingly ordinary afternoon, all it takes is the ringing of a cell phone for this ordinary day in Boston, Massachusetts to explode into a nightmare! Suddenly, anyone who answers their cell phone is instantly transformed into a raving lunatic by a strange signal, a “pulse” that is sent through cell phones. Anyone who answers their phone is turned into an out-of-control, murderous maniac from which no one is safe. Graphic artist Clay Riddell is fortunate enough to avoid being one of those who are transformed by the sheer coincidence that he doesn’t own a cell phone. As it quickly dawns on him that the catastrophe didn’t just happen in Boston, but probably everywhere in America, he joins other survivors who are looking for a safe haven, but Clay is also looking for his son. His determination to return home and make sure his son, Johnny, who owns a cell phone, is okay, drives every step of his journey, even as he and his companions make the horrifying discovery that the “phone crazies”,as he and his friends call them, are evolving... and whatever they are evolving into will be something even deadlier than they what they became when the Pulse happened! As critics and fans both seem to agree on, if anyone knows how to put a chilling spin on the modern day “zombie apocalypse” horror novel, it’s definitely master of horror Stephen King! I recommend it to all horror fans who love Stephen King’s books! Just don’t expect too much sleep after you finish it! 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️

Good thriller. If u like King ud like this. It got me addicted to King

Chillingly awesome. Perfect Stephen King. A must read for any fan

One of the best!. One of my favorite books! Very interesting story line with the cell phone causing the downfall of human civilization as we know it. Thought about the book every time I was on my cell phone long after the book was finished!

Great King. I loved this. It was a little weird at some points but still amazing. I actually enjoyed the bizarrness of the ending (if bizarrness is a word) It is a masterpiece.

Wow... Not much I can say other than this is worth the time and money to read this. It is so intense and kept me glued to my seat. Totally re-reading

AMAZING book. I have the hardcover, not the e-book, but I have read this book time and time again, and it never ceases to amaze me. MUST READ!

Fantastic!. I have been a lover of King's work for many years and also a lover of the zombie genre. This is a fabulous mix of the two and I could not have been happier. A fabulous read that I did not want to put down.

Another great book!. As always, SK manages to create a world where a seemingly impossible set of circumstances becomes all too plausible for comfort. M

best. book. ever.. I read this book over the summer and immediately told all my friends it was one of the best books I have ever read. His story telling power was enough to keep me at bay from my cell phone for 2 weeks. This book is a must read.

Amazing. Stephen King is just an amazing writer! this book will have you hooked even if you dont feel like reading!!!!!

Very cool. Stephen king and zombies cool

Loved it. One of the first Stephen King books I ever read and I loved it. IT was so enjoyable all the way through. I don’t know if there’s much else to say about it. Would love more like this, instead of the classic horror stories.

It was aight. Not the best and not the worst but boy were the descriptions of the firearms laughable. Oh well. Still a fun read

Great read.... Very disappointed with the end!

Great Read. Great! I wanted more!

Enjoyed it. Made me glad I never answer my phone

The best. One of the best books I've ever read.

Cell. Who better to write a zombie novel than Stephen King. From the opening pages when a peaceful city turns into a hellish mess. Engaging, I couldn't put it down. Now come on filmmakers, what are you waiting for for this one?

Cell. Zombies just got a lot more interesting. King's imagination is incredible. This book is a must read. I've read many of King's works throughout the years and with the exception of "The Eyes of the Dragon" this has got to be my favorite.

Interesting concept. Very interesting concept. The ending left me wondering what happened to the characters and I wanted more.

phoners rule!!. Great book loved it! grabs you from the first page......... dont balive me... see for you self.

Good book crap ending. I'm a huge Stephen king fan, been reading his books since I was 12, love everyone i've ever read. This book was no exception It was riviting from beginning to end. I gave it a 4 star because the ending was horrible! There was conclusion, just left you hanging. I can only hope he's writing a second book to close this one.

great, or a gory mess?. this is not a horror book, know this first and foremost. its a suspence action novel, but it involves scary material. if your at all squeamish about blood and guts, not to mention brains and burning bodys, skip this book. i wont judge. however, if you can realize that the gore is only there to better the book and prove certain points, then this is the book for you. if you want to read this book just for the blood and death, go see a docter. but anyway, back to the review. This book takes place in a doomed world in which a new kind of zombie is here to terrorize and feed. this is a commonly used genera, and im a little saddend that Stephen King could not improve on it like he has in other books, such as THE STAND. Its backround is completly unoriginal and has no surpizes, and for many this may be a reason to stop reading. nah, who am i kidding, by then you'll be hooked by the charactors and the thrill of the book, as it thrusts you carelessly from one scene to another. the backdrop is my only gripe, and it is a big one, so dont overlook it. but if you can overcome it, youll find one hell of a book. it has some of the most horrific zombies, far surpassing those of "the walking dead", not to metion great people, even if they dont have a lot to work with (the setting and all that) not to mention great action and many days after in wich you will be pondering the TRUE ending. im not going to spoil it, but i'll tell you this, its either a hit or miss. youll love it or hate it. i thought it was perfect and the perfect end to a good book. 8.7/10

Cell. Great book until the end!!! Completely leaves you hanging & that ruins the entire book for me!!!!!!

Make a movie of this. Read the hard copy a few years back. Couldn't put it down. This I think would make for a interesting movie adaptation.

Awesome. One of my all time favourite books (and i have read A LOT of books) Definitely worth the cash.

Great book!!. Amazing book...worth the money for sure.

Cell. Well, I guess shame on me for expecting something very much different from Mr. Kings myriad of other literary works. He goes on and on and on with something so implausible and far-fetched that it is maddening that he did not condense it by about one half. At over 600 pages, this book, (with its subject matter that parallels Cormac McCarthys "The Road" in many ways), is much too long, drawn out and has nothing of substance to awaken the readers senses too much. To me, I would say that Mr. King has gone to the well a few too many times with offerings such as "the Cell."

Great book. I loved this book the characters were amazing and the whole idea was just so cool! The only reason I'm not giving this book a 5 is because of the cliffhanger ending it made me think for weeks afterward and it was just so annoying I really want to know what happens I wonder if he will write a sequel? Anyway I would recommend this book to all of my friends and I would have to say this is one of Stephan kings best books its definitely worth the money!
