Galveston Book Reviews
Galveston by Nic Pizzolatto Book Summary
From the creator, writer, and executive producer of the HBO crime series True Detective, comes a dark and visceral literary debut set along the seedy wastelands of Galveston.
On the same day that Roy Cady is diagnosed with a terminal illness, he senses that his boss, a dangerous loan-sharking bar-owner, wants him dead. Known “without affection” to members of the boss’s crew as “Big Country” on account of his long hair, beard, and cowboy boots, Roy is alert to the possibility that a routine assignment could be a deathtrap. Which it is. Yet what the would-be killers do to Roy Cady is not the same as what he does to them, which is to say that after a smoking spasm of violence, they are mostly dead and he is mostly alive.
Before Roy makes his getaway, he realizes there are two women in the apartment, one of them still breathing, and he sees something in her frightened, defiant eyes that causes a fateful decision. He takes her with him as he goes on the run from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas—an action as ill-advised as it is inescapable. The girl’s name is Rocky, and she is too young, too tough, too sexy—and far too much trouble. Roy, Rocky, and her sister hide in the battered seascape of Galveston’s country-western bars and fleabag hotels, a world of treacherous drifters, pickup trucks, and ashed-out hopes. Any chance that they will find safety there is soon lost. Rocky is a girl with quite a story to tell, one that will pursue and damage Roy for a very long time to come.
Recalling the moody violence of the early novels of Cormac McCarthy and Denis Johnson, this powerful, potent, and atmospheric thriller is impossible to put down. Constructed with maximum tension and haunting aftereffect, written in darkly beautiful prose, Galveston announces the arrival of a major new literary talent.

A solid but unspectacular crime- noir novel. This is a well written, character driven crime noir novel from the writer of True Detective. But for those who liked that show's dime store philosophizing, as I did, Galveston contains little of it.
Easy fun and pointless. A good well written, easy to read book! However I found myself unfulfilled at the end. It is good but I felt like it was missing something!
Good Book!. The book is a well told story by a very talented writer. Pizzalato makes even the most mundane parts of the story entertaining. I look forward to more of his books.
Good Read. This book is good not great and reads fast, finished it in 2 days. If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would. Nothing special or overly interesting about the actual plot of the story, but Pizzolatto does a great job of making the reader care about a protagonist that we have no business caring anything about. The characters in the story feel very real, and the settings and situations encountered are beautifully described throughout. Definitely worth the read, though not sure for more than $10.
A work of art. Words can’t describe the depth of emotion this book elicits. The prose is truly haunting and memorable.
Galveston. The writing and the story both are incredible...but when I finished it, I hated it...I don't really enjoy that much frustration and pain. I think I'm gonna stick to light fluffy escapism... This story hurt too much... Sue Bainter
Great debut from a good up and coming writer!. Pizzolato is probably best known for the True Crime series on HBO but this debut novel of sorts is right out of that mixture & it’s a must read I would say. Great characters in this dark, twisted world of the Deep South, with a lil tragic love story mixed in to boot. Check it out!
Provocative. Provocative story telling by a talented writer. Looking forward to Nic Pizzolatto's next story.
