Watership Down by Richard Adams & Madeline Miller Book Summary

Now with a new introduction by Madeline Miller, the New York Times bestselling author of The Song of Achilles and Circe.

The 50th anniversary edition of Richard Adam’s timeless classic, the tale of a band of wild rabbits struggling to hold onto their place in the world—“a classic yarn of discovery and struggle” (The New York Times).

A worldwide bestseller for over thirty years, Watership Down is one of the most beloved novels of all time. Set in England’s Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey from their native Sandleford Warren, through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, and toward the dream of a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.

“Spellbinding…Marvelous…A taut tale of suspense, hot pursuit and derring-do.” —Chicago Tribune

Worst Book Ever!!!. Oh my gosh this is the absolute worse book ever!!!!! They have stupid words for everything!!! I want to run over this book with a hrududu!!!! (tractor) and then have Efrafans pass hraka over it!!! Don't spend any money on this!!! You will regret it!!! Don't say I didn't warn you!!! (The only book that may be worse is "The Hobbit")

Great book, old but amazing. It looks old and the beginning isn't what you call attracting, but once you get going it is the best book ever! I've already read it twice and I'm really tempted to read it again. So full of detail and so adventurous. I really loved this book.

A story well told.. I really enjoyed reading this book. It brings back childhood memories of watching the movie and my love for animation, animals, and fiction. I love how it can appeal to older readers.

Watership Down. This tale has acquired the status of classic. Adams has created a world, a culture, a folklore, an epic. A remarkable story to remind us that nature around us is as much a part of the world as we are.

Amazing. My favorite book of all time!!! Just fantastically written and told. Although $13 is a lot of money for a book (I think) I suggest you go down to a bookman's or any independent bookstore and buy the physical thing for like $6 HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK

Watership down. The best book I have read in a long time... It really should become a movie because my kids would love it!!!

Love. I love this book. This book is awesome

Amazing book. And someone please tel cat3118 the movie came out in 1978.

Truly a Classic. How does one write something that is about rabbits, yet breaks ALL common stereotypes about them!? This book was amazing! I especially loved the stories of El-ahrairah. Simply beautiful little tales. El-ahrairah's my favorite character because of those stories. The action, the adventure, and the intrigue, all mixed together with perfectly presented wisdom on man versus animal, and the truth behind what the human race will do to other lives in the world... And why. When I said all common stereotypes about rabbits were broken, though, I wasn't kidding. The rabbits fight, chase, and battle all enemies in order to survive, so this isn't really a children's book. It is graphic, but the intrigue will keep your eyes on the page. Well worth reading!

Wonderful. Very glad to have finally read a book I have wanted to for many years. I was nit disappointed.

Wonderful!!!!. A wonderful story following Hazel and Fiver and their other rabbit friends in their many extravagant adventures. A must read!!!

Hooray!. ITunes can do a few things right, apparently. Thank God this book is here. Hopefully they will add the movie sometime. Anyways. This book is, IMO, the best book that will ever be written.

Epic tale of survival thru adaptation. When I read this as a teenager I was so impressed that I picked up the authors subsequent books as well. This is by far his most outstanding work. The world is fully imagined, the surrounding made real thru exquisite description. This is an outstanding book for the apprentice reader in your home. It only takes a few pages to get caught up in the adventure. The action is paced well and it is difficult to get bored or lost in the details. When finished one feels as though they have been educated as well as entertained for quite a long time.

Absolutely Love It. This is so on my list of Favorite Books!! I like the bit of darkness it has at times and how good it’s written. I like the mini story “The Story of the Trial of El-arhairah” It is my favorite one!!

A Classic. This book is pure magic, One of the greatest books ever.

HYPE. I tried reading it. I had to stop after the second chapter, it was boring and dull. This was the only book in my life, I had to stop reading.

Classic.. This didn't make on the classic list for nothing. All will enjoy reading, I am positive.

.... This is the best best book ever written. If anybody disagrees I will punch them.

Astounding!. This is a beautiful piece of fiction dealing with the lives of rabbits in a cruel, changing world. A must read for those who love animals and nature.

WOW!!. I started reading this book a few days ago and was amazed at how wonderful of a book this is. I simply cannot believe this book was made up in the car! This is truely a classic that I will treasure forever.

Watership down. Literally the best book I have ever read. Anyone who likes to read should add this tale to their library. A total metaphor for a sense of purpose and overcoming obstacles. Richard Adams mixes fantasy, nature, and human elements flawlessly to entrap one's mind in this tale of adventure.

Very very good. This book may take you time just like me to read, but make no mistake once you are finished you will not regret it. It is a great tale about rabbits that need a new home and face many struggles. This may not sound interesting, but it is just get past the first 5 or so chapters and you will be hooked. I am a regular high school student and enjoyed it all the way. I found myself becoming attached to the characters in a sense. You care for them and want to know more. In all, it is a very good book that is a mistake not to read.

Its boring. It is. Trust me.

Watership Down. Richard Adams weaves a hypnotic tale of intrigue, adventure and drama from the eyes and ears of a small band of renegade rabbits. A compelling story for young and old Hazel and Fiver, an odd pair, discovery a way to survive in a world of change and chaos. Highly recommend.

I love this book. I love this book so much. But it is a bit on the expensive side. The book is excellently written.

Why so expensive?. So before I rant, the book itself is an absolute classic...5 out of 5 stars. However, why does a story that is well over 30 years old cost $11? We're talking about an electronic copy of a book here! For that matter, why are any of these books (even new ones) more than $5? Total rip off!

Adams is a master. I just loved the suspense that Adams was able to provide throughout the book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who needed something to read.

Watership Down. My son asked me if I had a favorite book growing up like he has Harry Potter and the Lightening Thief. I told him about this amazing story, packed with adventure, humor, tragedy, mythology, war... "Come on, Mom," he's skeptical, "it's about RABBITS." So, I start reading. He's hooked, riveted, every night he begs for the next chapter. This is a great book for reading aloud because there are a variety of different voices and dialects. It works well for IPad because he can look up many unfamiliar names of plants and birds when he is curious. If this were a regular print, he may have gotten lost in some of the descriptions.

WHOAAAAAA. ITSSSS SSOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!

Watership Down Review (angela & lauren). To answer the first question, I would like to go to say that this book is classified as a college recommended book due to the knowledge you gain out of this book that relates to a college level brain such as the politics used. -angela • This book is more than likely on the college recommended list due to the politics and real life things involved in this book. -Lauren ------------------------------- "A little way in front of them, the ground had been freshly disturbed. Two piles of Earth lay on the grass. Heavy posts, reeking of creosote and paint, towered up as high as the holly trees in the hedge, and the board they carried threw a long shadow across the top of the field. Near one of the posts, a hammer and a few nails were left behind." -angela(example of imagery) "Kehaar- Though a character in the book, Kehaar the gull also is a symbol. He represents the help and friendship one can obtain by accepting that not all others are like themself. Because the rabbits accepted him despite his difference, they received his companionship" -Lauren (example of symbolism) "Has been interpreted as a political allegory demonstrating how extremist views can ruin a society. In their journey, the rabbits encounter two other warrens. One is called Efrafa, and it’s under a military dictatorship by an insane rabbit called General Woundwort. The other warren featured rabbits who grew fat and reliant on food left for them by a nearby farmer. Although they’re fully aware that the food is only meant as bait, they risk their lives to get it." -angela& Lauren (example of allegory Watership Down literary devices include allegory, imagery, symbolism and of course personification as the rabbits take on roles of humans. ------------------------------- "When it comes to this book I would like to be honest and say that it did not have a very big impact on me.. and I'll explain why. Even though this book does teach a whole lot about politics and is a very educational read, I never really felt a connection with this book that truly impacted me. Though if I had to pick out something that impacted me.. I would say the way that the author used animals to portray his message is something that I admired, as it is an old technique used in story writing to get the message across, so I do think that by using that it showed me as a writer that portraying an animal with human actions can get points across in a whole new way." -angela cordova "I found that this is a good story and is indeed very good for college level. Someone who is very interested in rabbits might be interested more in this book... this book tells the story of many rabbits out on a journey to go as far away from danger as possible, it also is full of mystery, politics, crime, and danger. This book I would say had a good impact on me in seeing all of these political views to learn something new about the world I live in." -Lauren Sanchez

A great book!. This is a fantastic book! I remember being forced to read it when I was younger. I used to try to get out of reading it. Until one day, I decided to just read and... I loved it! Watership Down became one of my favorite books. I sincerely advise you to read this book.

I’m a cry baby but this was really worth tears. I loved the mini series I almost almost cried and did cry over the heart warming and emotional scenes of the miniseries so beautiful

I love the show on Netflix it’s so good I can’t wait to read the book!. I can’t wait

best book ever!!!!. watership down is the best! if you love rabbits, if you love adventure, if you love just a really well-written book you should buy this one!! even if the first 20 pages are slow keep pushing through it is well worth it!!!

Genius. If you don't like this book, that's OK. After all, it's about the friendship of a small group of rabbits and their desire to survive and build a new life in a far away place. They overcome enemies of all sorts including a militaristic warren or rabbits. It's got a touch of mythology but you will probably become enthralled with how real this story seems. This is a tale of loyalty and courage that parallels the real world of war and survival. And its never boring.

Made me cry. I purchased the paperback version on this book, when it first came out. It made me cry. After I bot my iPad, I downloaded the D/C of it, so I could keep it. (paperback long gone) I decided to read it again .... normally I do not read books a second time. Darn, if it didn't make me cry again! For a children's book, that was pretty good! Would I recommend this book? Yes, again and again!

Terrible layout. This is one of my favourite books of all time, but this edition is terrible. The text overlaps itself, making it illegible in places, and I can't find any way to fix it. For the price (double what I paid on my Kobo, and more than double what it costs for a paperback copy) I expected to be able to read it properly -- this includes the quotations that open each chapter, and not just the story itself. Maps that are supposed to be a 2page spread (forming a single map) are split up, so that you have to "turn the page" to see the second half, and cannot be viewed together. A massive ripoff, and a huge disappointment. I will never buy another book from this distributor, and I'll be trying to get my money back.

Superb. An absolute must read. The best book I've ever read.

Stellar. A casual read above all else. Will set you wishing you could come back for more brilliant adventures. Compelling characters and a fantastic story drives this book to its incredible ending.
