The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee Book Summary

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a documentary from Ken Burns on PBS, this New York Times bestseller is “an extraordinary achievement” (The New Yorker)—a magnificent, profoundly humane “biography” of cancer—from its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the twentieth century to cure, control, and conquer it to a radical new understanding of its essence.

Now includes an excerpt from Siddhartha Mukherjee’s new book Song of the Cell!

Physician, researcher, and award-winning science writer, Siddhartha Mukherjee examines cancer with a cellular biologist’s precision, a historian’s perspective, and a biographer’s passion. The result is an astonishingly lucid and eloquent chronicle of a disease humans have lived with—and perished from—for more than five thousand years.

The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths, told through the eyes of his predecessors and peers, training their wits against an infinitely resourceful adversary that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out “war against cancer.” The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist.

Riveting, urgent, and surprising, The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the future of cancer treatments. It is an illuminating book that provides hope and clarity to those seeking to demystify cancer.

The Emperor of all Maladies. This biography of cancer was presented remarkably well. I was concerned that the subject matter would be rather complex and at times boring, but surprisingly encountered an exciting and gripping storyline. The scientific and medical discussions of various accounts of cancel occurrences were woven with such simplicity that the reader did not have to resort to a reference manual for explanations. I now have a much better understanding of cancel and since I tend to gravitate towards the optimistic side, I think cancer will surely be eradicated in all its forms.

Don't waste your money. Very knowledgeable author but too technical and not enough emphasis on the people.

Outstanding. This is a beautifully written book on a compelling subject. Scientific work reveals its underlying excitement as the author turns research into a gripping page-turner. A wonderful read about an obscene disease.

Compulsive Read. Siddhartha Mukherjee takes us on a riveting, dramatic, and ultimately hopeful journey through the history and personality our our species greatest malady. Mukherjee’s knowledge and genuine interest in oncology is evident through his use of engaging writing and equally motivating subject matter. Read. This. Book.

Fascinating journey through the history of cancer. There was always a grip on the subject and SM very eloquently details the internal conflicts and an inertia to believe in another's scientific evidence among physicians dealing with cancer. Kudos, I learnt a lot

Extremely captivating. I am extremely impressed by how the author manages to make a book about cancer so captivating. Mukherjee describes the human journey of tackling cancer’s treatments, causes and potential cures through vivid stories of scientists, doctors, and advocates and their tireless pursuit of a cure.

Magnificent and riveting!. This is a must-read for anyone battling ... or who may someday be battling ... cancer. Of course, this means all of us!

A complete look. A fascinating history of cancer. It was dramatic and moving and scary. Got the Pulitzer for a reason. This author is CONSUMED with his subject.

Cancer history with hints if science. A good book that gives you a clear history of cancer, not when cancer began, but when cancer was coined “Cancer”. What Drs have done in the past and where the science is heading. There is one or two chapters where it goes into the slight science behind cancer, but other than that just a cancer history book. A good read if you are interested in the history aspect of cancer research. If you are trying to lear about cancer however, look else where.

The Emperor of All Books. Once you start reading you won't let it go, the language is perfect and I was amused by lots of insightful information. Allah bless us all. Thank you doctor for this book and... We want more!

Absolutely Riveting!. Pure facts and simple emotions under one cover. Anyone ever touched by cancer--that is, everyone--should experience this horrific ride looking over the shoulder of the monster.

Riveting. Fascinating, moving and interesting while still thoroughly (for a lay person) explaining a complex and convoluted scientific history. I never expected to be mesmerized, but absolutely was. Read this book regardless of how closely or personally cancer has touched your life.

Empowering. I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in May of 2011. My CML is under control. This book helped me deal with my initial shock and anxiety over being told that I have a blood cancer. It is difficult to read of the suffering endured by many over the centuries but immensely heartening to hear of the courage and triumph of many. If you have cancer or are sensitive, keep a tissue or handkerchief close and be prepared for a roller coaster of emotions. Read it to the end. You will not be sorry.

Incredibly good!. The best biography one can expect about the most horrific disease known to man.

Riveting!. Obviously based on massive research, this book portrays the personal struggles of the many individuals who have devoted their life on the war against cancer.

Good but way too long. This book does a great job of telling a fascinating medical history story. But it is way too long and detailed. An 800 pg ebook is not my cup of tea and can be daunting when the story can be so dreary.

Must read. This is a beautiful book about an ugly illness. Yes there is a lot of science but there is also a gripping plot that keeps you turning the page to find out what happens next. It is a particularly fascinating look at the men and women of science - how much major advances depend on the most minor and mundane forces: you like you co- workers, you didn't get enough sleep, there was a snowstorm. I highly recommend it for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer.

Phenomenal!. This is a truly phenomenal read. I was surprised to find myself so engrossed by the history of a disease. I recommend it to anyone who has been touched by cancer.

24.99? What??. 24.99 for an Ebook. Are you crazy? Or do you think I'm crazy?

the emperor of all maladies. Possibly the most influential, informative and fascinating book I have read in decades. This narration encapsulates the progressive understanding through millennia of cancer and it's etiology, binding and connecting these facts to social and political events. I have practiced medicine for 25 years and this book tied together many pieces of information that formerly were disconnected for me. Deeper than the time line of facts it presents, it challenges one to look at our mortality at a cellular level. Beautifully written.

Expensive. If I'm gonna pay $24.99, I want an actual paper copy, and even then...that's a lot of money. Way too much money.
