Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card Book Summary

Orson Scott Card brings us back to the very beginning of his brilliant Ender Quartet, with the novel that begins The Shadow Series and allows us to reenter Ender's world anew.

With all the power of his original creation, Ender's Shadow is Card's parallel volume to Ender's Game, a book that expands and complements the first, enhancing its power, illuminating its events and its powerful conclusion.

The human race is at War with the "Buggers", an insect-like alien race. The first battles went badly, and now as Earth prepares to defend itself against the imminent threat of total destruction at the hands of an inscrutable alien enemy, all focus is on the development and training of military geniuses who can fight such a war, and win.

The long distances of interstellar space have given hope to the defenders of Earth--they have time to train these future commanders up from childhood, forging then into an irresistible force in the high orbital facility called the Battle School.

Andrew "Ender" Wiggin was not the only child in the Battle School; he was just the best of the best. In this new book, card tells the story of another of those precocious generals, the one they called Bean--the one who became Ender's right hand, part of his team, in the final battle against the Buggers.

Bean's past was a battle just to survive. He first appeared on the streets of Rotterdam, a tiny child with a mind leagues beyond anyone else's. He knew he could not survive through strength; he used his tactical genius to gain acceptance into a children's gang, and then to help make that gang a template for success for all the others. He civilized them, and lived to grow older.

Bean's desperate struggle to live, and his success, brought him to the attention of the Battle School's recruiters, those people scouring the planet for leaders, tacticians, and generals to save Earth from the threat of alien invasion. Bean was sent into orbit, to the Battle School. And there he met Ender....

Absolutly fantastic. This is one of the best books ive ever read. Such a page turner! Read this book now!!!

Ender's Shadow = Unneeded title.. I can see from publishing point of view how to play safe by using this title; however book is a winner on its own. Good fiction + genius writing .

Best. Book. Ever.. I am not a huge sci-fi fan, but this book really hooked me. It has a great plot, and goes into depth about Bean's history. It is just as action-packed and exciting as Enders Game. If you haven't read Enders Game yet, you should read it before this book.

Ender’s Shadow. This is a really great book and I recommend it for people who have already finished Ender’s Game.

Best ever. This book is rivaled only by Enders Game. As I said in My review of Enders Game, if Hollywood screws up the movie, I'm burning something down.

Writing is great; errors in scans.. The scans for the book had a few spelling errors where the auto-text prediction went nuts.

Awesome. Way way better that enders game But I read enders shadow first so maybe that's why I like enders shadow better

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I was thinking oh this won't b all that great, it's the same story and all that. And I mean it is the same story. Just so different. I like it better this way, having the same story from two different views and backgrounds. I LOVED IT!!!!! you have to read both of them it is the best series EVER!!!! at the same time its so hard to believe the bean is only seven when the book ends and that he will only live to be like 25ish and when he dies he will be this huge freaky giant thing. That part makes me sad. But other that that BEST SERIES EVER!!!!!!!!!!

The better of the two. Ender's game is good but this one is much better I look forward to reading the rest of bean's story.

Ender's Shadow. Ender's Game remains one of my favorite books. Ender's Shadow, retelling that story from Bean's perspective, rivals it (unlike most of the other sequels).

A Fine Companion to Ender's Game. A satisfying read for any OSCAR fan.

Very interesting perspective on a familiar story. It had been some time since reading Ender’s Game, but this was thoroughly enjoyable.

Amazing. The amount of focus in the intricate details required to map out every plot point is awe inspiring. The book weaves an even further in depth story behind Enders Game. This author is truly one of a kind.

Another great read. After following Enders core story from near birth to death I kept hoping to find glimpses of his past. In short I was looking for Bean and other toon leaders and commanders to fall within the story. Reading Enders Shadow was such a thrill. It not only offered a brief history of Bean, it opened up a field of new possibilities as the story continues. It is a perfect companion to Enders and another amazing read from the series. Well done.

My favorite book.. This is just, a really great book. Everyone should buy and read this... Right now.

Decent, but really a shadow of former tales. The story of Ender Wiggins is a fantastic read and memorable adventure. This story follows the same story from a different perspective that comes across forced at some points and convoluted by too many moments where our protagonist seems to know more than anyone could possibly fathom from mere breadcrumbs of information. It gets tired and forces the plot to fit into Ender's Game with uncomfortable results. There is nothing revolutionary or genuinely insightful here, but Ender fans will like the familiar trail and alternate camera angle. It's a decent read but will leave you empty if you are looking for something truly unique. If you read and enjoyed Ender's Game, you won't miss much by passing this story up.

Kind of good. But not even close to Enders game

Thawk. This book is one the greatest books I have ever read. After reading Ender's Game I was already a huge fan of Card. He became my favorite author, and this book doesn't disappoint. Once you start you will not be able to put it down

Enders game. An exhilarating tale of friends and a perfect mixture of sadness and self doubt to keep any age of readers hooked.

Better than Enders Game. My Teacher gave me this book to read after I finished Enders Game And I loved it.

4 stars compared to Enders game. I read Enders game first and I think I would have liked the saga more if I read this first. This book is slower and might be to slow for middle school readers. This book is great and I love how the two story's link. This book is great but not as good as Enders game. Scott orson card spent much more time on the character of Ender and it is rather obvious.

A Must-Read for Anyone. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi or liked Ender’s Game. Orson Scott Card did a stellar job of character portrayal and helping us understand the impossibly fast workings of Bean’s mind, as well as the realistic personalities we find in other characters like Sister Carlotta, Colonel Graff, Poke and Achille de Flandres. It’s about as realistic as a post-modern sci-fi novel can get, and the plot advances at as perfect a pace as is possible. The only books I’ve enjoyed as much were probably the rest of the Shadow Quintet and perhaps the work of J. K. Rowling.

bean. read the series and I can tell u tht beans side is awsome

If you like Enders Game.... You will love this book. OSC did a phenomenal job retelling the story of Enders Game, but from Bean's point of view. Absolutely brilliant! -Bethel

Truly moving. This book is wonderful and has a remarkable emotional maturity and complexity. Take my word for this though, because even though in theory you could start with Ender or Bean, Ender is really the way to start. They're both equally amazing it's just.... Ender comes first.

Excellent. Awesome must read

Better than Ender's Game. I read this book before Ender's Game, and I was simply amazed. It gripped me from start to finish. After reading it, I read Ender's Game right away; unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing.

Life changing. This book is simply one of the most remarkable and awe-inspiring books I have ever read. Orson Scott Card's exploration and development of character in this book is simply beautiful.

Adds more color to Ender's Game. While Card intended this to be a functional stand alone book, I am not convinced he achieves this. I am also biased in that I read Ender's Game first. However, EG is my favorite novel ever, and this book supplements it nicely. It is far more similar to EG than the immediate sequels to EG (Speaker For The Dead and Xenocide). In summary, if you enjoyed EG and want to experience a slightly different perspective on the events of that book, you should totally read this one.

Exceptional story telling. I love the Ender series and the companion Shadow series. The imagery of the universe is vast and vivid (alliteration anyone?) and the perspective wholesale unique, yet not dark and obtuse like many modern story lines are, both in literature and film. There is a sense of hope that permeates the entire story that, although isn't entirely embraced by the main character because of the strength of his other characteristics, causes great satisfaction without feeling overdone or anywhere near gratuitous. I highly recommend this book (and the rest in the series) to any who like only the best story telling coupled with fantastic science fiction.

Good story. Good story

Wonderful Work. I love the Shadow series. I do not recommend having middle school students read it. I had forgotten there's a violent rape scene in the beginning.

Best book. For me its a VERY GOOD book, it has more story than the Ender's Games, Im reading it right now and it is incredible how the story shots you in the face

Not as good. This book is not as good as Ender's game but is excellent at giving us another perspective of what took place in that book.

Awesomely fantastic in any way!. I know it's not the best title to a review ever, since it's not really good grammar, but it's such a great book I had to write like this. It's a lovely book that includes the story of Bean so well and filled everything. I loved the Ender's Game so much, and liked this one as much. A little genius growing and meeting Ender -what a great story- and making a great team to win the Buggers -again what a nice story isn't it- and the tragedies that come to him. In a way, Bean in obviously more peaceful than Ender.

A shadow of the original. Doesn’t work as a stand alone novel, there’s too much context from the vastly superior Ender’s Game that just doesn’t get translated to Shadow.

Terrific. This is a great novel that parallels Ender's Game. This book follows Bean, and explores a ton of that characters depth we never would have guessed at from the first book. Highly recommend Ender's Game and then this one to any sci-fi fans.

Great companion to Enders Game. If you enjoyed Enders game then this book is a great read and gives a bit more insight into the world orson scott card has created. The only reason I don't give five stars is because there are a few almost clumsy adjustments to cover discrepancies between the two books. You really must look past that and if you do then this is a fantastic addition to enders game or probably as a stand alone. I would suggest reading enders game first thought.
