The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick Book Summary

A New York Times bestseller, The Silver Linings Playbook was adapted into the Oscar-winning movie starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. It tells the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife's betrayal.

During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.

When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year's Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their "contract." All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.

In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat's mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

Awesome!!. What a great book. Quick, easy read. Made me cry many times. I'm a good way.

Really good read. I did not see the movie. But unfortunately I had seen so many trailers and acceptance speeches that I did not have the pleasure of developing the characters in my minds eye. Cooper and Lawrence and DeNiro were all too present. In spite of this it was a compelling read. A wonderful story and heartfelt ending. And no I do not want to see the movie. I enjoyed traveling the journey. Just wish I had the opportunity to embark before actors faces took over the descriptive words.

Great book. I couldn't put this book down!

Realistic. I loved it. I can't say it was the best book I've read but it was a love story that deals with real issues that people go through daily. I don't think you would be disappointed by this book.

The Silver Linings. Great story. It will tug at your emotions in a few directions.

Exceptional Read. I believe this book is one of the best books I have ever read. I enjoy the way it's written as though it is a journal, and always keeps you guessing. At first, it sort of annoyed me the way Pat spoke obsessively but once you get past that, I could not put the book down. The mystery of this book is simply exceptional, and the life lesson in always finding your silver livings is something I will take with me always. This book to me is a must read.

Silver linings playbooks. I really love this book and I didn't read it until after the movie, but I'm not sure why I wanted to see the movie and after I did I was in love with it. It's a love story about a guy who is bipolar, however he still finds love because he doesn't give up. Everything he did was for the women he thought he loved, but it turns out she left him and he still got the better girl in the end. I don't really read books so for me to read this whole book in under a week is saying something big. I just wish that I find a girl who is just amazing.

An Amazing Story. After hearing about the movie I knew I wanted to read this book. I began reading it at 11:00 am one morning and couldn't put it down. I finished it the following day at 7:00pm. This book is a great story of love and loss. As a teenager I really connected to the story. It was a mixture of sadness with a touch of humor. It was a great read all together, highly recommend it.

So much better than the movie.. Don't get me wrong. I loved the movie, but the time inside Pat's thoughts gives so much more depth to the experience.

About author... I met mr. Matthew quick at a seminar this evening for my high school! He is such a genuine and humble dude!!

Captivating + Mesmerizing. This book is a complete work of art and heart for illustrating the real life struggles those who suffer from mental illness have to endure, as well as how it personally effects their support system. Such a lovely novel worthy of all its success and its prose is absolutely easy to get lost in.

Great book for teenagers and up. This book had a great plot an the characters connected very well through the book. Both characters, Pat and Tiffany fought through many things along the way. Overal it was a great book as well it was a book that was easy to understand.

5 stars. The movie is very, very different and quite adapted. Wish I read the book first. Loved this book though and will definitely read it again!

Wonderful book. Loved this book, movie did it no justice

Beautiful. I read this book because I fell in love with the movie and just as I expected, the book is way more of a gem than the film.Loved every bit and really wanted to see Pat succeed.

AMAZING!!!. This was an amazing book! I did watch the movie first so I picture Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence throughout the book which isn't bad considering the movie was Amazing as well.... I loved this book, there's so much depth and feeling to this story. I love how it ended yet hated it! Read and you'll agree with me ;)

Silver Linings Playbook. It differs greatly from the movie and as a result anyone looking for a carbon copy of the book, its story and characters are going to be disappointed; additionally many may not like it based on how overly-quirky the story is and how oddball the characters tend to be. Understanding all of these complaints the purpose of the book stands irrelevant to them. The book and its story and writing seems to have more ADHD than its main character, Pat, who struggles with bipolar disorder after being divorced by his wife due to her cheating on him and him responding with abuse to the man she had an affair with. Pat meets Tiffany, a girl whose husband died who has just as many issues but doesn't have the past of living in a mental institution to prove it. These two, their crazy mental disorders, their love, and the crazy disorders and problems with the rest of their family and their friends really work. You understand and feel for each one of these characters and they are absolutely incoherent to their own personalities but you nonetheless love and care for them as though they're friends of yours. It may all be a little odd and weird and strangely awkward, but it still makes a strange bit of sense in a genuine and sentimental way. The ending pays off for all of this and when you look back and begin to think on it, it begins to seem better and better. It's a quick read and while no one can be guaranteed they'll love it, I can at least guarantee no one will regret reading it.

Good, but not feel-good. I liked the novel but you have to understand the theme is about closure not about a happy ending. honestly, it was kinda depressing but that's understandable given the story.

Easily relatable. One of the best books I've read in a long time. It's a shame being an avid reader of variety of fiction that I come across this after it's adaptation. Somehow though, I seem to think it was the right thing to do. It's an easily relatable book for people who have faced loss of the most traumatizing kind. Sometimes it gets to you so bad that you lose hope. Sometimes you wrap yourself around a lie to get closure, and sometimes you fight to get it. Against all odds. Physical or psychological. This book covers most of pain and redemption in quite a funny, heartwarming way, without getting manipulative to the reader. The minds of two troubled people are stripped bare, in search of silver linings in their dark, cloudy life. This is also one book that should warrant a viewing of it's adaptation, mainly so because it gives you an insight into what are the other little things the protagonists could do in life. Take it as a nice accompaniment in a way. Overall, getting back to the topic, read the book. It's the exact silver lining you need in cloudy days.

Silver linings. Disappointing compared to the movie.

Too freaking good. Great read. Relatable characters. LOVED IT

Loved it!. Makes you realize that the ideas you have in your head about something usually is not reality. But perhaps, it's something even better than what you think or assume.

Great read. Loved every page of it. I couldn't put it down once I started. Def a great read!

Silver linings. Wow this book took me on a roller coaster of emotions and opened my eyes up a great deal! I recommended to everyone.

Awesome read!. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Life lessons are abound! I am now practicing being nice, not Right. Love it!

Good. The screenplay was a good adaption of this book. However if you are expecting this book to read like the movie, you'll be disappointed. So be open minded.

The silver linings play book. Excellent book! Loved all the characters, even the grumpy dad!

Great Book. Loved the film and loved the book even more. Bravo Matthew

My thoughts. Wonderful writing, even better then the movie

Incredible!. You really should purchase this book, it was one of the best books I've read in years. Could not put it down.

Best book ever. This book is a great read. I started and finished it in one day. Totally recommend.

Full of heart. I am only 24 years old but I feel like I resonate with Pat and his struggles. The way this story weaves together to people struggling with mental illness who don’t remember how to love properly anymore but find solace in each other is nice and made me happy.

Great read.... I like the movie so I thought I would read the book to see if they stayed true to it. For the most part, they did. However, I liked the movie better. I think that is because I saw it first. When I read a book before I see the movie, I find that to be the other way around. But all in all, it really is a great read and a well constructed book that keeps you turning pages until you can't turn anymore...

Sliver linings play book. Great book. Awesome ending

Great story. Just a touching storyline. Cannot wait to see the movie

Great read. This book is a relatively quick read and a page turner. I enjoyed it and will likely read another one of the author's books!

Happy Ending. I enjoyed reading this book! Made me laugh and even tear up 😭😁 I definitely would recommend this book 👍

Brilliant. As well as the movie, the book is fantastic. 100/10. The fun part about watching the movie first was I could imagine Pat having his meltdowns at home and how Tiffany seduces Pat at dinner when they met. Nevertheless, this book is probably one of the best. If you don't like books, or are debating wether not to get this, you're lying to yourself when it comes to this one. The imagery, literature and scenarios are just as good as they get.

Gave me so many laughs and hopes. Really a nice novel. I love Tiffany’s characteristics...brave and kind people deserve silver linings!

Easy read, great story. Great book! Well-written and easy to read.

I love this book so much. This book is amazing, I can't stop reading it, I finished it within a week because I couldn't stop reading it. 5 stars all the way

Excelsior. Wow! Way better than the movie, loved all the details in the book that were not shown in the movie.

Horrible.. Just awful.

The silver jekw. I wsh I would have never bought this book. Author is lazy

Shear excellence in narration. Great book had excitement drama n emotions .... A must read

Silver linings play book. Great read....didn't want to stop reading. I think Pat, the main character who is mentally ill, has thoughts that are so much like most people....he just verbalizes his thoughts and even acts on them more than the normal person but his conversations with God actually sound quite a bit like what I think most people have. Loved the writing and the story, awesome book. I will recommend this book to my friends.

Realistic Fiction. I’ve never read a novel so true to life as The Silver Linings Playbook. Most novels attracted me with a few chapters I could enjoy but then the story just played out into a stupid fantasy that would never happen in real life. I think most guys could relate to Pat People’s life story, and that’s something nearly every book can’t say of their own main character (becuase their embellished to create a story; as if there aren’t stories to be told similar to real life). This is the type of book I’d recommend to anyone that’s ready to read a book about life.

Excellent for those who “get it". I watched the movie first and then went and got the book. I expected variances and more character development, which I got. The book gave me a much better understanding into Pat’s mind and provoked many emotions throughout its entirety. My favorite chapter has to be “Montague”. It was hillarious. My least favorite in terms of feelings were the letters chapters. I’ll never look at E-A-G-L-E-S fans the same way again. Glad we Cowboys don’t do that stuff… :) Overall, I believe I felt what the writer wanted me to. I read the critical reviews and disagree with the authors of them. The arrogant responses were written by people who clearly didn’t get it. I did. Thank you Mr. Quick.

Better than the movie!. The movie was great and the book is even better! The story is quite different from the film. Loved it!

Good Read. Held my interest and kept me coming back, which not all books are able to do for me. A little one note in my opinion, but a good read none the less! Can't wait to see the movie.

The Silver Linings Playbook. A very honest portrayal, I think. You get to be in his head, and a fly on the wall at the same time. Such a refreshing perspective on mental illness, and addiction, and how they are truly family illnesses. The power of love and community in healing cannot be understated. I really enjoyed this book and read it over two evenings.

Awesome. I don't really read much so I decided to choose this book and what A book I couldn't put my ipad down makes me want to read more books now go eagles lol

A Book To Remember As A Silver Lining!. This book changed my life! It's 3:49am and I've just finished reading the best book ever! I love the story of depression and how Pat gets misunderstood all the time ( story if my life😅 ) Yet fights through it in the end with his f-bombing friend-who's my favourite character! The only thing that I didn't like was his therapist, Cliff. I mean in the beginning he was alright but by the end, to me..... He was just kind of annoying and useless to Pats problems. But what I did like was at the end, how everything came together and made sense to Pat. Ex. Nikki's affair with the man who called Pat an illiterate buffoon, with the Kenny G. music in the background, (hmm a single note and count to ten😉) Anyways I loved the story, (I was SO sad to finish it 😭) and I would recommend it to anybody, who's looking for a silver lining.

Great book. Very interesting read. Could not put it down. Eye opening, funny and sad.

A quick read. Really enjoyed the read.

Amazing. Had no idea what it was about,I was so pleased. Best book I've read in awhile. I couldn't stop reading it. Loved it.

Silver Linings Playbook. This book is so good that I'm glad I got it. The depth and detail Matthew Goode writes in this book is so addicting that you can't put it down. I cried at the end (that's how good it is.) Do not delete this book once you get it! You will want to re read it.

The Silver Linings Playbook: A Masterpiece. Wow. Just wow. Not only should everyone read this book because of it's raw style of writing, but because of the lessons we learn from it. This book is truly magnificent and will make you laugh, smile and even shed a couple tears. It's a beautiful work of art that teaches us that life isn't always like a hollywood movie. Definitely worth the read.
