Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King, four “disturbing, fascinating” (The Washington Post) novellas—including the story “1922,” a Netflix original film—that explore the dark side of human nature.

“The pages practically turn themselves” (USA TODAY) in Full Dark, No Stars, an unforgettable collection centered around the theme of retribution.

In “1922,” a violence awakens inside a man when his wife proposes selling off the family homestead, setting in motion a grisly train of murder and madness.

In “Big Driver”, a mystery writer is brutally assaulted by a stranger along a Massachusetts back road and plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

In “Fair Extension,” making a deal with the devil not only saves a man from terminal illness but also provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

In “A Good Marriage,” the trust forged by more than twenty years of matrimony is irrevocably shattered when a woman makes a chance discovery leading to the horrifying implications of just who her husband really is.

Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring hit films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, King’s Full Dark, No Stars is a “page-turner” (The New York Times) “as gripping as his epic novels” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), and “an extraordinary collection, thrillingly merciless, and a career high point” (The Telegraph, UK).

Can't put it down. I gave up reading King books for a while. I started in the 70's with Cujo, Carrie and The Stand and was hooked. The Green Mile series had me waiting with anticipation for the next book to come out. Then I had a time where I just couldn't finish a book. I don't know why, but I lost interest after reading about 2/3 of the book. Maybe it was the fact that I didn't want to carry around a big hardcover book around with me, Now the iPad has come into my life and I thought that i would try downloading an ebook. I was a book snob that only wanted to hold the hardcover edition, no paperbacks for me! I didn't think that I would like it, but I was wrong. My first download was Under The Dome. I now carry my iPad with me everywhere so i can read anytime i have a free minute. After finishing Under The Dome, I needed another King fix and fast! Full Dark, No Stars satisfied me totally. It is King at his best. Stories that make you cringe and cry out loud. Very entertaining, exciting and will keep you turning those pages to see what will happen next. Thank you, Steve!

Thrilling, captivating. An awesome read, hard to put down

Full Dark, No Stars. Definitely read. I think this was more of a depressing story that puts your emotions in a bag and thrown over the edge of the grand canyon. Thanks King for another suspensful sob story

Full Dark---. I'm disappointed that Steven had to make an inappropriate political comment about Sarah Palin. I've lost alot of respect for him. He should only write a stay away from politics, as should all of Hollywood. Keep your opinions to your self. By the way, the head if H&HS's (Sabilious -- sp?) had already put her self into the "Death Panel" debate re: the 10 year old that needed the lung transplant. So please tell Steven to stick to writing and stay out of politics. I for one don't want to hear his opinion

TSS. Excellent book by Stephen King! These short stories were very tantalizing and a treat to read! I loved every minute of this book and would recommend it highly!! You will not be disappointed. Great job Stephen!! I want more!!!

Stupid.. It's a terrible book, that gives the title "Horror" a terrible name. If I crapped on a piece of paper it would be better than this "book".

Great Read!. King has done it again! Reading the sample had me yearning for more. Every story was a great read!

Congratulations!!! You never cease to scare the daylight out of me!!. I have always loved to read, (even though I quit school at 14 because I was pregnant and got married; therefore, giving up my dream of ever being a writer). And In my 44 years, I've read a lot of books. But of all the books I've ever read, and all the writers of those books, none have ever turned my head or my page like the writings of Stephen King, and this book is no exception! You are the master of your craft Mr. King!! And once again, I will go to sleep tonight knowing that I am not alone in my thinking that the workings of this world and those who dwell amongst us here are what fiction writing is all about. Now that my children are grown, I may dare to recapture my dream of writing, you do so inspire me sir! And would love nothing better than knowing I may someday (before I leave this world for the next), write a book that you may or may not read. I guess I'll see where my new found inspiration will take me....... Or not.....

Full dark no stars. This is typical Steven king through and through. It's wonderful!!

GREAT!!. I have always had the trouble to get through an entire book. Especially in a somewhat timely manner. I couldn't put this one down. Every story is better than the last. I highly recommend it!

Hasn't lost his touch. Enjoyed this book a lot and couldn't put it down. Stephen King hasn't lost his touch on telling short stories.

Great Shorts. Been a long time since I took the time to read King and this compilation of short stories does not disappoint.

'Tales from the crypt-ish'. It has been sometime since I read a King novel, so I did not know which corner of his mind he was going. I found it gory, suspenseful (often a page turner!) and extremely funny in many places. It was an easy read and I really enjoyed his sentimental afterword.

Die Hard Fan. This is another great book by the master writer Stephen King. I enjoyed every story. And the afterwards is so true. Everyone has the side they let people see. And then there is the other side. Great book! I'm sure you will love it also.

Full Dark No Stars. Good reading. Especially The Driver and The Good Marriage.

Full Dark, No Stars. Great book! A collaboration of short stories themed around vengeance. Was in consistent suspense in each story and felt connected!

Good read!!!. I've always liked his books, but I really like his short stories and novellas. "Big Driver" & "A Good Marriage" are exceptional.

Full Dark, No Stores. Simply awesome! Stephen King is at his best with his amazing short stories! I feel he is sitting here telling me his scary stories....

A good read!. "Big Driver" got a little...long and I found myself kind of skipping through it towards the end. The others were all very intriguing. The afterword was very good as well. King knows readers well.

Full Dark, No Stars. This long time fan is glad to say that Mr. King has once again written a novel that is guilty of stealing this readers valued sleep.

Masterpiece. I’ve read many Stephen King works - and I own many as well - but Full Dark, No Stars is definitely one of a kind. It challenges your mind and your attention, pulling at every crevice and cavity of humanity you posses. The novel will reel you in like tuna, and spit you back out into the ocean, senseless, with its twists and turns. I always know King will deliver - and so he did. Absolutely remarkable.

Amazing. I think this is King at his best.

Full dark. Great collection if stories. King should do more short stories this I think is almost as good as four past midnight great read

Powerful Stories. The stories are so good they stick with you long after you put the book down. The Big Driver is my fav.

Exceptional. A little different than most of his work, this book focuses more on reality, and what could happen. Like every book I've read from Stephen King, I'm sad it's over.

I was riveted to the end.... Not full of the supernatural as some of Stephen kings other works, just enough to make the story spicy. Great read worth every penny.

Awesome page turner!!. Great fast read awesome short stories!

Creepy and Fabulous!. I love these short stories!! I really didn't want the book to end. I can picture these characters in my head as I read...there are certainly potential movies to be made with these stories. Stephen, keep up the awesome work. ~A Fellow Red Sox Lover.

Legaleaglelc. Excellent short stories.

Full dark, no stars. Awesomness at its best

Awesome.... King at hs finest...and I have had the pleasure of reading all of his books....must read for King fans!

Full Dark, No Stars. I've been a far of Stephen King ever since I was a little girl, and I snuck my mom's copy of Night Shift. I read everything he wrote for YEARS, devouring epic tomes like IT and The Stand in little more than a day or two... I couldn't get enough. But I've begun to cherry-pick in more recent years, because I have found myself disappointed with some of his newer work. For this reason I have missed a few books that I was reconsidering and preparing to read... Like this collection of stories , Full Dark, No Stars. That is, until I read the reviews of the politics that Mr. King is apparently injecting into his writing. Now, sadly, I have to regard him the same way I do Brad Pitt or George Clooney... As an over-opinionated celebrity who would be better off remaining neutral if he wants to keep collecting my money.

Full Dark, No Stars. I loved these stories, particularly Big Driver and A Good Marriage. It's not often that the "revenge factor" is presented in such a thought provoking and surprising way. Stephen King, you are like fine wine....you just keep getting better with age:) Sherry Kordecki

Great Book. Favorite titles out of the four were 1922 and Fair Extension.

True Stephen King. The things nightmares are made of. Stephen has successfully been able to find my worst nightmares and childhood memories and twist them to make them worse. Love it!

He's back!. Really enjoyed this one!

Excellent. I loved each story. Scary, suspenseful, couldn't put it down. If you like Stephen King you will not be disappointed.

Full dark, No stars. Stephen King's genius lies in his ability to depict the horror of human nature - that's where true evil lives - these stories are indeed dark

Disturbingly Enjoyable. ...Just like all of King's writings! I thoroughly enjoyed this book of short stories and was sad to reach the last page. A must read!

The King has struck again!. Stephen King, you've done it again! An award winning novel of some of your best work!

King at his Best. This is the King I like the most...never afraid to write what no one else will.

Full Dark No Stars. Mr. King, why do you have to give us your political views? We don't want to hear that crap. We want to read your stories, that's what you are the best at. If you insist on giving political views, at least once in awhile take a shot at the liberals, God knows there is enough crap, they have done. I really don't expect you to do that, cause liberals never think they are wrong and ALWAYS, blame someone else for the crap that they have caused.

Full dark no stars. very good book of course. are there any that aren't good books. Some of these stories really make you think about your life and your situations you may be in.

True to its title. These stories really Rock and this is the some of the rawest writing I have ever read by Mr. King. Personally I Loved them and couldn’t put this book down. Some of the writing wasn’t easy to read but I still highly recommend!!

4.5. “The Husband” is worth the price of this oldie, that I somehow missed. It’s a slow, creepy, burner that made me very nervous.

Book review. Great stories and they could really be true to life! That is scary to think about but I bet these tales are happening everyday somewhere in America. Enjoy the read!

Full Dark, No Stars. This is a tough read but very much worth it for any "constant readers" out there. ;) Some of the imagery and ideas are hard to swallow, but I personally wouldn't have it any other way coming from such a brilliant writer. Write on Mr. King. Write on.

King at his best!. I love King's conversational tone spinning out tales involving everyday folks finding themselves in complicated situations. These novellas kept me guessing until the end. Could this happen to me?

Great read!. This book was very good, as all Stephen King books are. I was sometimes left wanting more closure at the end of the stories.

Started off good. The book started off good ad captivate me until I read the really offensive sentence. But I had to remember the book take place in 1922.

Amazing. Steven king never ceases to amaze me!! He has a brilliant mind and a way with words!! This book is no exception either. Word by word perfection that leaves you unable to put his books down.

Riveting. I have the hard copy of this book. In true King fashion a book that won't let you put it down.

Excellent. Burned through this baby quick.

Full dark, no stars. I absolutely loved it! I could really empathize with some of the characters. Sent chills up my spine.

Time well spent!. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!

Black house. This is a great novel , a perfect follow up to the iconic TALISMAN. Great work gentle men. Terrific character development . I first met ol' Travellin Jack over twenty years ago. I like Travelin Jack , and Wolf , ol' Speedy / Parkus , and that cool Beezer dude!

Full dark no stars. I love it!!!!!! It's a must read :)

Pure Stephen King!. These short stories reminded me of the "classic" Stephen King novels (ie. Christine, Carrie, Salem's Lot, Night Shift). No unnecessary profanity, just pure dark and honest story telling! Loved it!

Full dark no stars. Loved it! Brilliant!

Had me on my toes. I’ve been trying to read self-help type books and these stories made me realize I can’t. I need to be gripped and kept on my toes the entire time. King delivered again.

Amazing so far.. I only read the first story but this is amazing stuff by the king!

Full Dark, No Stars. I loved this book. Could not put it down

Full Dark, No Stars. As the faithful reader that Steven King often writes to, I not only appreciate his talent, I have embraced the many different styles and genres that he has chosen to write in. This is the first book I have read on an electronic device, I was not excited about this at all, but it was a much better tool than I thought it would be. I must say the stories harken back to some of the darker and more bleak aspects of human nature that I have glimpsed in Steven King books of the past, books that I loved and shivered through in my teens and twenties. I am now a mature 50 year old woman and must say I was more moved and disturbed by these stories than I thought I could be. I found myself unable to sleep after reading a couple of the stories, not necessarily a good thing at this stage of my life. Atmospheric, engrossing and heartbreaking at times, this was a wonderful book, it really made me think, especially the last story as I have been married to my husband for 27 years and this one particularly freaked me out. Now I will be looking at my husband through different eyes. Thanks Steven King for showing me that I can still enjoy a good scare. I shall now try and find a sunny place as I feel kind of chilled, your faithful reader.

Excellent. Fantastic short storynreads by the master!
