The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly Book Summary

In this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller, after taking on a foreclosure case, defense attorney Mickey Haller fights to prove his client’s innocence—but first he must follow a trail of black market evidence to its sinister end.   Mickey Haller has fallen on tough times. He expands his business into foreclosure defense, only to see one of his clients accused of killing the banker she blames for trying to take away her home.

Mickey puts his team into high gear to exonerate Lisa Trammel, even though the evidence and his own suspicions tell him his client is guilty. Soon after he learns that the victim had black market dealings of his own, Haller is assaulted, too -- and he's certain he's on the right trail.

Despite the danger and uncertainty, Haller mounts the best defense of his career in a trial where the last surprise comes after the verdict is in. Connelly proves again why he "may very well be the best novelist working in the United States today" (San Francisco Chronicle).

He's the Best!. Michael, I am your biggest fan! Thanks for such incredible story telling. Each story you tell pulls me in hook line and sinker. This book is the best ever! Could not put it down. Your novels are like the tennis match of literature. Mickie's ahead then behind then ahead. His client is guilty then innocent then guilty. And then at the end a pie in the face! You never see it coming! I wish the next chapter in Michael Hallers' life was on the written page today! I can't wait to see where you take him next! The new DA? The possibilities give me goose bumps! Please write faster!

Another great read from Michael Connelly. Smart, fast, compelling, witty... you want to keep reading but you don''t want it to end. The Fifth Witness is as good as the best Michael Connelly has brought us thus far. As good as the best from anyone!

Great!. Great book. Fast read. Didn't want to put it down.

Least Favorite so far. This book was good no doubt. However the trial part of the book was a good majority. I can see how other people say it’s drawn out. I think the author spent too long in the courtroom on this novel.

Great read. Thrilling

Excellently written. I love how this author writes, giving enough detail to keep me interested but not so much it makes my head hurt. The Fifth Witness is another successfully suspenseful courtroom based novel that keeps you guessing and impressed at the legal tactics Mickey Haller uses to get what he wants for his clients. Enjoy!!!!

Great as always!. One of my favorite writers. Never disappointed me yet!

The Fifth Witness. Great read. Enjoyed the pace and character development. However, Mickey as a politician? I don't think so, compromise and being beholden to others is not the Mick that I've come to know and root for. Good luck Michael with the new direction, all I can say is Maggie must be special in the sack.

Predictable. Good writing but my early expectations came true as the book played. I would read Connelly again.

Fast and Exciting. As good if not better than Lincoln Lawyer! Too short!! Give us more Mickey please!!!

Awesome. Awesome

Courtroom thriller. I couldn't put this book down once I got going with it. Great book for the beach,

Great story!. Great read! Better than Lincoln Lawyer! Love the Mickey Haller character and surrounding cast. I enjoy Connelly's style of writing and how the puzzle eventually falls in place in spite of all the twist and turns!

Fantastic. Great read! couldn't put it down

Fifth witness. Enjoyed the book but thought it was very drawn out.

Finding his groove.. I've always found Mickey Haller less interesting than Harry Bosch, but Connelly has done a good job of adding some dimension to the Lincoln Lawyer here. This is a finely crafted legal novel, with a lot of detail in how a defense attorney puts together and manages a trial. There's a chess-game underway all the time and MC does a great job of getting into the mind of a trial lawyer. He's done his homework and to build a credible tale focusing on the mortgage finance industry, he's mastered the details. Haller's ambiguous relationship with his ex-wife is handled well and effectively woven into the plot... not the tacked on distraction it has been in the past. Well worth the read.

Fifth Witness. This was a very entertaining book moving from scene to scene allowing you to capture in your mind the events clearly as if you were part of the book. Very good with a twist at the end

Page turner!!!. Great book!! I read it following the Lincoln Lawyer...enticing and an overall fabulous novel.

Better than Lincoln Lawyer. I predict another movie. The ending was a total twist I didn't see coming. The story took off and never slowed down. A++

Awesome. Awesome

Fantastic and Fun. The Fifth Witness is superb courtroom fun. The way Connelly writes is the perfect balance of education and humor. The plot moves extremely fast, overall the boom crackles without any slow spots. Each character is described well enough that you really feel like you know them well enough for their contribution the story. Seeing the film, The Lincoln Lawyer was a good pre-cursor to the world of the characters as well. Bravo. Reading more of his now.

The Fifth Witness. An awesome book barely able to put it down. The trial kept you in suspense. Great ending. Look forward to more books with Haller. Can't wait to read the next book with Harry, the preview wet my appetite for more.

5th Witness. Another awesome Connelly book. If a fictional escape is your goal, he never disappoints. I read the entire series 2 summers ago - one of the best reading summers I've had! Now I eagerly anticipate the new releases. When I start one, I'm always leery that it will disappoint, but 5th Witness is another winner! Keep up the good work, and keep providing us a great means of escape. Thanks for a good one. I thought Bosch was the only character I wanted to explore, but I am equally engaged with Haller now!

The Fifth Whitness. 5/5 stars Excellent, couldn’t put it down. Would make a great movie!

This is the only book by this Author that i did not enjoy. I disliked the client and the entire foreclosure process. I only kept reading it to see if she was going down .

Just good. It’s just a good legal thriller with a neat twist at the end. Held my attention all the way through to the end.

Another court room winner. Connelly spins a great yarn, a bit out there, but believable. Fast paced, good characters who stay consistent, and an intriguing view of the law and the games people play. How books never fail to entertain and inform. Enjoy!

Excellent. Couldn't put this down. Fast page turner

Fifth witness. I am becoming quite the fan of Harry Bosch’s half brother. Would make a great movie but in the meantime it is a great read.

Great read. I enjoyed reading the Fifth Witness; I found it difficult to put down. I have to admit...I was not surprised by the ending. I didn't figure out the particulars but had put the basics together. Overall, a great read.

Eyes glued!. Couldn't put this book down! I loved every page. Micky Haller is a god!

ADiamond. Excellent with so many twists and turns! Loved it

Brilliant. I've read them all and this is one of his best. Like Mickey, I was led at a breakneck pace that held me in its grasp until well past midnight. Genius plot, well-drawn characters, crisp dialogue and skillfully crafted courtroom scenes. The saber rattling and thrust and parry between the prosecution and defense was as well choreographed as any I've witnessed -- and I do mean witnessed. Mr. Connelly made me feel like I was there; seeing the whites of their (often rolling) eyes, the nuances of gestures and the sweat on their brows. Masterful work. Many thanks for hours well-spent.

Excellent!!!. Love the plot. Keeps you guessing. Never expected the ending. Do not pass this one up. Especially if you are a Mickey fan.

Fifth witness. Great

Frickin awesome. I wanted to scream Bosch and, for MC to pen 12 titles a year. But This is another fantastic fast paced thoroughly thought out plot. In punjabi" tuannu jhappi payleyan". Means I would give my most fav author a bear hug for this, and am merely 250 pages into it.

The ending..not plausible.. There is no good way to write a review without spoiling the ending, but anyone who has read this knows what I'm alluding to. The format is consistent with his other work. Nice character development, technically well-written, and fun to read. A little preachy, but the ending..well it just doesn't work for me.

Fifth witness. Excellent ending. The trial form is tiresome to read word for word. It is a good way to practice your speed reading.

Gangbusters!. After a bit of a slow start, this novel really gets you involved and keeps you there. Terrific book like we've come to expect from Michael Connelly. I hope there will be more Mickey Haller stories.

Fantastic!. Great Haller story....absolutely held my interest from page one! Really heats up when they get everything in the courtroom going...LOVED IT!

Great read. Everything I ever read by Michael Connelly I’ve enjoyed same here!

Classic Connelly. A great read. Especially enjoyable were the tie-ins to earlier books and the reference to the movie deal with having Matthew McConaughey play Haller.

Captivating. This novel tells a fascinating story of corruption and deceit. It paints an interesting picture of how a defense lawyer must use whatever means necessary to prove their client is innocent even when there is doubt about their innocence. The author does a great job keeping the reader guessing until the end. A great read from a talented author!

THE FIFTH WITNESS. At least Bosch will be back this fall. The courtroom stuff gets old.

Sometimes the End is the Killer. Good story. Good Defense Attorney vs. Prosecutor Attorney front and back play. Plus the Judge wasn’t bad either. Murder always deserves being defended to the end. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose and maybe win again at a later time.

Fifth Witness. Great great read...I love Mickey Haller this in my opinion is better than The Lincoln Lawyer. The ending is unexpected and wets the appetite for a new phase in law for Mickey. Can't wait!

Too many holes. Lots of holes in the plot to make it a good read. At best it was okay. At the base of the book is a woman on trial for murder, but she would have never been arrested and charged with murder within 12 hours of the crime in real life. There was one evidence she was at the crime scene. The evidence was laughable, and in no way realistic. I was constantly reminded that this was a work of fiction, and that is disappointing.

Great book !. I think this book is a great follow up to the previous Lincoln Lawyer one, we find Haller being at his best with going back to his motorcycle friends in order to get some help . Nice plot and surprising ending , it give an hint to the next Haller novel who will be coming for sure !!! The Reversal revisited ..... Enjoy it like I did !!!

Dragged at times. Lots of courtroom stuff. Felt it dragged at times. Liked Lincoln lawyer much better.

Riveting. The novel keeps you guessing with an abrupt twist. Enjoyed it very much.

The Fifth Witness. Thoroughly enjoyed this sequel. Will look for the next one. The court scenes were gripping and the characters believable.
