The Odyssey Book Reviews
The Odyssey by Homer Book Summary
An Apple Books Classic edition.
Homer’s eighth-century epic poem is a companion to The Iliad. It tells the story of Odysseus, who journeys by ship for 10 years after the Trojan War, trying to make his way back home to Ithaca. Homer’s work was intended to be performed out loud, so it’s a masterful example of poetic meter and rhythm. But above all, ;The Odyssey is a story of adventure-and true love.
Odysseus has been gone for 20 years, and he longs to reclaim his role as king and reunite with his beloved, faithful Queen Penelope. During his absence, hundreds of suitors have eaten his food, lived in his home, and even plotted to kill his son. But before he can confront his enemies at home, Odysseus must fight a cyclops, escape after being imprisoned by a lovesick nymph, and confront the twin terrors of Scylla and Charybdis. As if that wasn’t enough, the gods take their grudges out on him, adding obstacles to suit their whims. Will Odysseus ever get home? And what will he find once he does? Within the pages of this ancient Greek classic are the origins for many of the myths we’re familiar with today. Pick up a copy and meet Odysseus, Homer’s timeless hero.

Great read. Was interesting and entertaining
What?!. Who translated this! I need the Stanley lombardo translation!
The Odyssey is amazing!. I analyzed this iconic epic in my English class, and I thought it was absolutely amazing!
Love it!!!. I love this book I've read it over and over and loved ever word.
Torture. I had to read this over the summer for school and it was absolute torture! I couldn't wait to get to the end! Absolutely hated it. I don't even know how people say they "enjoy" it.
Odyssey. It was OK. I disliked all that poetry though. Otherwise, not terrible.
Boring. I had to read this book for high school and college and it sucked
Amazing. I read the whole book in 3 days I did not put my book down!
It was fantastic!. This book is the worst book I have ever read in my entire life. The grammar was horrible. I had hard time seeing the words because they were so tiny. I suggest you or your child ( if you have one) to not read this book. jk jk, this was a great book! Great job author!
LOL. I love how with this book In particular, people want to pat themselves on the back for how fast they read it or how young they are/were when they read it.
4/5. This is a sequal to the Iliad and follows Odysseus as he travels from Troy. After being gone he is assumed dead and his family will have to fight their own battles. Odysseus on his travels home will test the Greek Gods and himself on his journey to his home, Ithica. This book is good for following the Iliad, but dissapoints with how slowly the book starts. Over all, I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Homer.
amazing!. i was unaware there was a 1000 page version of this i have only read the 300 page version, about a thousand times!
Hey. I love the odyssey!
Okay. This is better translated by Robert fagles
Cool but long. I loved it it's great for ages 12 and up only thing is that the intro is more than 100 pages and it's too long otherwise it's a great book!
Classic. Excelent
Use SparkNotes to Enjoy. I'm glad I read it, but don't be fooled that you can read this translation without some type of Spark/CliffNotes.
Awesome. I'm in 7th grade and when I was in 5th they took me to a field trip to watch the odyssey as a musical it was awesome so I got thr book and said this is great! It gave me a little more details
:). I have read The Odyssey many times and love it. I have found that the people around me who consider it boring generally do poorly when it comes to foreign languages, any advanced literature and some anthropology.
Classic. Didnt know the whole thing was a poem
Pathetic.. Watered down beyond recognition, and why does it rhyme? Doesn't deserve to exist lol
Meh. Not funny
The odyssey. I really didn't like this book at all, i thought it was terrible.
Great if read once. I've read the Odyssey 3 times (2 times for school) and I'm not even 17. In my opinion, only read it once and you'll be okay. Also don't get this free one, buy a real version without commentary.
Great. Tell the true it is a great book
Boring. This book is boring
What the DUECE. This book sucked. I had to read it for 9th grade. Who the heck likes Mythology? Weirdos.
Ok... I love this book and am sick of people saying its boring, however I did not enjoy the translation or the commentary.
Amazing. This was a poem!!!! It was so amazingly written that I thought it was a normal story that just rhymes
Eh not great. Boo boo
Great Book!!!. This book Is a very good book that takes you on a journey that will blow you mind. Anyone who underscore this rating is uneducated and prudent. However I am still reading this awesome book. It wows me every time I read on!
The best of Homer's Epic Poems. A very good read for those literate enough to decipher different dialects and formats of writing. 5 out of 5 for sure.
Good book. Interesting read
Great book. I love to read and this was just another one of those books I'll reminisce about forever. Highly recommend.
Love it. Best Greek myth book ever. I also recommend Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan.
Loved it. Amazing book i loved it & I'm 6th grade
It's alright.. I enjoyed reading this book. But I prefer the translation by Robert Fagels.
School. I had to red it for school in6th grade

Good. Kinna good
Brilliant .... But. How to review The Odyssey without sounding like the most presumptuous twerp? Let's have a go. Actually I'm not reviewing The Odyssey. I'm reviewing this ebook. Firstly it's free, which is a big plus to a Yorkshireman. Secondly it looks great on the iPad and is easy to access via the Apple reader. There are no negatives, hence the five stars, however I do have some advice. As you may know most free ebooks are long out of copyright and can be reproduced freely. Many are classics of world literature and free access for all is a great and noble project. However if you sensed a 'but' coming you were right. When we read classics of English Lierature in ebook form the only issue is whether the interface is any good. There are lots of various readers available and you probably have your favourite. So far so good. My advice concerns the literature of the classical period. Most of us don't read ancient Greek or Latin, me included, so we must rely on others to translate for us. As the translation must be old enough to be out of copyright this means that many date back to the Victorian / Edwardian period and even earlier. This means that we must come to Homer via the perspective of an earlier time and it is their reading of him with which we are presented. Many of these translations are wonderful and capture some of the brilliance of Homer as an epic poet. This version is that of Alexander Pope, one of our greatest writers. It is a work of sheer brilliance and beauty. It's also quite difficult to follow for anyone new to Homer and the classical world. Homer was a poet. Pope's translation attempts to capture the structure and more importantly the rhythm of the original. I maintain that for all it's beauty this is not the best introduction to the work. It would be a shame if a reader were put off finding out more about classical literature by starting with this translation. There are modern translations that read more like a novel and are much easier for those new to the material. Unfortunately you'll have to pay for them. Once you've read a modern version come back to Alexander Pope. You'll enjoy him all the more.
The Odyssey. looks like an original version, but in English! Useful introduction at the start for a novice. Chapter introductions also useful. This is a hard read and the use of words takes a bit of getting used to. Seems to lose itself in places, other bits easy to follow. A list of "who's who" would be handy, it would be a long list but for a non-expert sometimes it's hard to know who someone is and in the text who is actually "speaking". Stick with it and you will make it! Would make a good film - particularly some bits of it.
Good. I really like this book

I know it's a classic but.... The pictures were rubbish.
