The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Book Summary

As Fyodor Karamazov awaits an amorous encounter, he is violently done to death. The three sons of the old debauchee are forced to confront their own guilt or complicity. Who will own to parricide? The reckless and passionate Dmitri? The corrosive intellectual Ivan? Surely not the chaste novice monk Alyosha? The search reveals the divisions which rack the brothers, yet paradoxically unite them.

This book became my favorite before I even finished it... I remember that some say when Tolstoy died, on his desk were there two books: the Holy Bible and the Brothers Karamazov.

Spoiler alert! Ivan coerces Smerdyakov to do it!. Great novel. I can't wait for the movie.

Amazing, wonderful, glorious!. Wonderful, wonderful! Dostoyevsky is always a win, but this one in particular- I dashed through it!

Great. A classic and a must read

Absolutely fascinating. It is daunting to open the book up for the first time - the page count jumps at you, but the storytelling is so masterful that you are lost in the world of the 3 protagonists.

Never a better exploration of the human soul that The Brothers Karamazov. Read it

Formatting needs a clean up. It would nice if whoever submitted this free book did a bit lean up first. Page number entries appear throughout the text as if the book wasn't properly converted from another format. Of course the story itself is magnificent.

Must read!!. The main complaint I saw about this book was that the philosophical sections were long and tedious but I could not get enough of them. Amazing. Ivan’s chat with the devil got me the closest I’ve ever been to an existential crisis.

Genius storytelling!. Actions have consequences; some intended, many not intended; some just and deserved, some unjust and undeserved. How can we possibly deal with the inexpressibly complex ramifications of our actions and the actions of others? Seek truth and practice it; learn what love is, and show it. Read this book; you'll be glad you did.

This is the only book you ever really need to read. Essential. Read it every year.

The Brothers Karamazov. A true masterpiece of literature that plumbs the depths of the human soul, from relentless greed and debauchery to the joy of faith, hope and love.

Stunning!. I would recommand this fine book to anyone. It simply does not get any better.

AWESOME. Excellent recording of an incredible book! The Brothers Karamazov will forever remain one of my favorite books, and one which I hope to reread many times.

Brothers Karamazov - TERRIBLE. Whomever said this book is a classic to be read by every man should be strung up and shot. Had to be the worst book I've ever read. Wow.

Brothers karamazov. One of the best book the best to proof the existing of god

Still the best. I just finished my third reading of this great novel, and am again overwhelmed by it. Simply the best. This free edition is sturdy enough, using the old Constance Garnett translation. Read it. You won't regret it.

I don't have the vocabulary, even after reading this book.. I have read most all of the novels of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Krylov, and even Pushkin, and I have never been disappointed. This is another example of how literature is supposed to be. These pages are filled with intensity, elegance, idealism, tragedy, romance, religion. I could go on for an entire paragraph using only single words of praise. I highly recommend this novel to anyone, everyone. It is long, it is slow, it has some of the most difficult sections that are available to read in classic literature, but it is so worth the time. Enjoy.

Karamazov Passion. I have an intense, unironic love for this novel that rivals the famous Karamazov passion. The characters are compelling, Dostoevsky is the best, and the questions you find yourself asking whilst reading this are helpful in defining the human experience. Everyone should read this!!

Brothers Kamarazov. One of the best novels ever written. Great story; great characters; exceptional writing - even in translation.

The Brothers. Great story with great characters. One of his finest novels.

Fascinating. A fascinating landscape of human emotions, virtue, vice, misjudgments, lies, love.

Heart-wrenching and Insightful. One of Dostoevsky’s great works. Ilosha’s story made me cry.

best book ever. if there were only one book i could take on a desert island, this would be it. the genius of dostoevski opens a mirror in which we see ourselves, our secret passions and desires. i return to it again and again, and find new meanings every time.

Worth the read; be ready for some effort. At 877 pages, the translation I read was massive and left me with very mixed feelings: Positive: Many amazing philosophical discussions from varied viewpoints (eg. Ivan vs Zossima’s views of religion) and truly enjoyable satire (eg. the Devil and at least some of the father’s ramblings). Some genuinely heartbreaking and heartening moments, though more with the peripheral characters (eg. Ilusha) than with the core ones, for reasons below. Negative: Long, painful monologues or rambling messes, meant to illustrate certain characters and give a feel to certain circumstances, but actually nearly enough to dissuade me from finishing: disorganized, repetitive, and always melodramatic. Clearly, the author is able to craft rational, clever, beautiful prose, so it’s the literary tactic and intentional, it just gets excessive. Probably 300 pages could have been cut and it would have been more enjoyable. Overall: worth the read; there is really worthwhile content here; even as I intended to write about particular characters I disliked, I was inspired to reflect exactly what that says about my own character and empathy… so I changed my review. If a book can do that, it must be good!
